I have been looking for a forum like this for a while and hope members will share their knowledge with me. Up to know I have scouring the internet and Wikipedia.

For a start, I have a 1936 Luger with S/42 stamped on it in place of the normal DWM. From what I have been able to find out, it sounds like this Luger was manufactured by Mauser.
It came with a holster, but I have not been able to ascertain if the holster is original or not

That looks like a Portuguese m/961 Holster for the Walther P.38.

Or a German post war P.38 holster. They are very similar.

Welcome Alan.
Hope you will find the forum informative.
Good looking Luger!

Welcome to the forum. Mauser made your Luger in 1936 at their factory in Oberndorf am Neckar, Wurttemburg, Germany. DWM's Luger manufacturing operations were moved there from Charlottenburg in about 1930. At that point, "S/42" was Mauser's concealment code, assigned by the government for military contracts.

Welcome to the forum. You'll probably enjoy a copy of our forum's FAQ document. It is a great reference and has decades of accumulated Luger forum knowledge.

Just follow the "FAQ" link at the top of every forum page and download the PDF.

Thank you for the replies.
Still trying to find my way around the forum, will definitely look at the FAQs

Interesting that the holster could be for a P38.

The other point that has confused me is the magazines.
I have 2 magazines, one with an aluminium bottom and the other with a bakelite bottom.
Neither have numbers on them

The aluminium bottom one as in picture is the correct for your pistol(even if should be numbered). The bakelite bottom fxo appeared in 1941(they are not numbered).

As for the holster. I think it is German, not Portuguese.

Portuguese P.38 holster:
