Help Grip screw problem
I messed up, I was removing and reinstalling the grips on my Arty and did not have the screw lined up quite right and messed up the first thread now can not get the screw in and do not want to make it worse, does anyone know the correct thread size for that hole in the frame.
Thanks 5card |
You might try installing the screw from the back side of the grip opening. When the screw gets to the outside it might clean up the damaged portion of the threads. It will be a pain trying to turn the screw in such a cramped space but it could be quicker and a lot cheaper than trying to find the proper Whitworth tap.

I have that Whitworth item. I will try to remember to see if it is marked as to size and thread count, when I get home in a couple of hours.

I bought a tap, too, for the very same reason. they don't cost all that much and you can easily find one online. Very handy to have as a remedy for this situation...
My technique for chasing the threads out is the same as Ron's, but with the tap. It's better to approach the misaligned material with the tap already established in threads that are where they're supposed to be. Since the business end of the tap is larger diameter than the shank, I was able to first screw it through the hole on the other side, which allowed approaching the messed up one from inside the frame. |
