Luger Double Date Info & Value Needed

This Luger is from a collectors estate, the caliber is 30 Luger. I am posting some photos, hopefully I can get some info here as to the value and what the gun actually is, I also have a Genschow & Company, Berlin 1940 flap style holster that came with it. Any info appreciated. I can take more photos to help with ID and value, thanks in advance.

First, are you certain that it's .30 caliber? According to Gortz & Sturgess, the BO: mark that designated the barrel steel came from Bohler was only applied to military Luger barrels for a very limited time in 1913 ~ 1914. The number 27 indicates the steel lot.

Further, the number 2 at the base of the barrel may be part of what was originally "8,82" which is the bore diameter in mm and common for a 9mm.

Please confirm that the bore is 30 caliber. My best guess at this time is that a 1913 ~ 1914 9mm barrel was used to repair that Luger sometime after WW1, possibly while in Weimar Army service.

Yes it is a 30 cal barrel, thank you for your info, but the barrel does appear to have a "liner" in it....not sure but I can post a pic

Interesting. I owned one of these that had a liner, a 1912 DWM if I remember.

Welcome to the forum

What I see,
A DWM (manufacturer) made in 1918, originally would have been 9mm for the army.
The 1920 is actually not a date but a gov't marking (see our FAQ in new collector area, https://forum.lugerforum.com/showthread.php?t=13121 )
This marking was to show it was inventoried and belonged to the military.

I would guess it came over to the USA after WW1 and before WW2, 7.65mm (30 luger) was easier to get than 9mm at that time.
NOTE - on the left side rail, just below the serial number, it says Germany - this shows it was exported to the USA.

That is indeed a liner. The original barrel was, of course, 9mm.

Edward is correct that the "GERMANY" stamp shows that it was exported to the US. I have a similar Erfurt that was reworked post-war and exported to the US. The date was scrubbed and a new 30 caliber barrel installed. Other than the barrel, it's all matching.

Thanks gentlemen, any idea of value of this piece ?

Thank you for the info, any idea of the value ?

It appears to be in good condition and the holster also looks to be in good condition. if the bore is also good, I'd estimate $1200 ~ $1400.

Note that there is a notch at the front of the receiver (that I failed to notice before). All DWM Lugers with a notched receiver left the factory as an Artillery Luger with an 8 inch barrel. After the war, Germany was restricted on barrel length and that is why the barrel was changed. The 8 inch barrel was too long.

Adding to Ed and Doubs info, the cut on the front of the receiver suggests that it was originally an L-P08 with a long barrel. As for the value you request, I am not an expert, but I would guess the gun alone would be in the $1200. to $1500. range. Others with more knowledge will weigh in.

Great picture of the barrel.
I have never seen a liner !!

Yakman 09-28-2022 01:20 PM

I have seen very few Lugers with lined barrels, however all of them were done by US gunsmiths. Not saying this one was done here, but never saw or heard of one coming from Germany. I suppose it's possible, though. I doubt it would draw much attention if it were displayed at a gun show. Except maybe for the holster and magazine.

I think what appears to be a black plastic bottom police magazine and the decent looking holster are worth about as much as the pistol alone.

The magazine if in really good shape could draw as much as $500.00, crazy I know, and the holster, if we could see more of it, $350.00. So, I'd say buy the rig for $1200.00, keep the mag and holster, sell the pistol, and maybe have the mag and holster for free. It wouldn't be the first time that's been done.

This is why we ask folks to post HERE and not a photo hosting site.

If we are willing to help you, it would be nice to host the pictures here for other folks to learn from.

PLEASE DO NOT DELETE OLDER POSTS OR PICTURES!

Agreed!

I could not agree more, Mr. Tinker. The original post went up on 26 September. It's now 30 November, and I just got around to viewing the thread. It's pretty interesting, but would have been much more so if I could have seen what y'all were talking about!
