George Anderson Came Through To Help Correct a Stock
 

About 8 years ago I purchased this 08 Navy and later bought a navy stock. I could never get it to fit. I found out it was the commercial version. George found me the correct one and also a beautiful artillery duel mag holster. Its nice to have a real mentor!! TKS George

Thank You!The commercial doesn't have the round plate. I could never make the small handle go up with my first one!. It never fit at all! George spotted it. It was new to me!I was told it serial to Ureguay??? I learned my own relutance to ask! I think we could use a good book on Navy lugers. Ive never seen a commercial luger and would'nt know the difference between the two.

What a beautiful rig you have there! I'm new to Lugers, but have always admired the Navy pistol.

Thank You, #2525b, I bought from Ralph before he died! George found me the military board. Ralph sold me a commecial navy board that wouldn't fit. If anyone needs a commercial navy board I believe George might have one! Tks Eric

I just noticed Bob Simpson has a 1908 Navy with 'Germany' on its side and mine doesn't. Are we both correct mine is 2505b ? Is this a commercial model?

Both your and Simpson's Navy Lugers are military. Simpson's was exported for commercial sale after WWI and received the "Germany" export stamp, yours probably came home with a GI.

There is still some confusion about Eric's original statement. Eric, you mentioned "holster" but I'm assuming you meant "stock". Were you stating that your commercial stock would not lock onto your military Naval Luger or where you talking about the leather holster?

I'm guessing you meant that your stock was not correct, as it did not include a military data disk, which would be correct for your military pistol and that your new military stock does lock onto your pistol properly.

You are correct! I had purchased the 1908 navy and its navy leather holster and stock from Ralph Shattuck. Jerry provided all the leather. Later I purchased the board but never would lock. George Anderson sold me a correct military board so we have a commercial navy board to sell. I'm told its from Ureguay!

Eric, That is a REALLY NICE Navy Luger! I am envious...

Also Eric, you mentioned the need for a good Navy Luger book. There IS a Navy Luger book, but as nice as it is, it is old and is based on old information and doesn't contain sufficient detail for today's collectors based on discoveries and research over the last couple of decades.

Our late hero, friend, and Navy Luger Forum moderator, Tom Armstrong, was co-authoring a new Navy Luger book when his untimely death occured.

Perhaps George Anderson can enlighten us on what has happened to the manuscript and the effort to produce that book? It's publication would be very welcome in the collector community and a fitting final tribute to our late friend Tom.

What percent were Navy marked? Unfortunatly mine wasn't although my Weimer double dated Erfurt artillery was drafted by the nazi navy as evidenced below! See 'WEIMER AND EARLY NAZI LUGER' pages 203-204 'Early Nazi Navy Markings reported both were DWM!

Quite a few of the 1st and 2nd issue 1906 Navy Lugers are unit marked but not many of the other variations of P.04 are. Hardly any 1916 or 1917 dated ones are. Not sure about Weimar or Nazi Navy...

I think the disc makes the difference!

I agree , and beautiful exemple !

The commercial and military Navy stocks were physically identical. Originally, the military ones had no stock disc and were identified as military by a large Crown/M stamp on the left side of the wood.

The discs were made standard in 1910, with many of the early ones refitted by adding the disc.

As for fit, the stocks were hand fitted to the matching pistol, like many other Luger parts. It's not unusual to find original, correct but not matching number, stocks need a bit a tweaking to fit a particular pistol.
