Adapt M1 carbine rear sight dovetail for a micro red dot

I think the title of my post says it all...

I've searched for a simple, low-profile adapter that has a dovetail on the bottom to fit onto the one cut for the rifle's rear sight, and about 2 inches of 21 mm rail on top, but could not find such a thing as of this writing.

Anybody have a lead to a source?

I don't believe what you are looking for exists. You will probably have to start with a block of steel and a file, or a milling machine to get what you want.

I was afraid that might be the case.

I stuck an inexpensive mini red dot on the Erma EM1-22 that I just won at a Gunbroker auction--the seller was Sarco, who seems to have listed several of that same firearm recently. In this case it was easy because Ermas have fore to aft dovetails cast into their receivers, all ready for clamping on whatever optics you want, Bottom line, red dots have won me over.

:surr:How about a red or green dot on a P08?

Thanks, Mike, something like this would be the ticket! I suppose I could use the rings on something else...but they are sold out. :banghead:

I like the way they've negotiated the use of the rear sight's dovetail for mounting. The rail overhangs the ejection port of the rifle a bit, I suppose biased forward to give room for scopes to render proper eye relief. If used for the mini red dot, the rail could be shifted back--which would look better, too, IMO.

You can always truncate excess rail when you have it positioned where you need it

Cut the wings off a used sight, or just the base- they are sometimes around.
Then screw a section of rail to the cut off "dovetail platform".

I'd like to keep it as low profile as possible. I was thinking that a section of rail trimmed to desired length, to the bottom of which I'd weld the dovetail's male piece would do the trick for saving the most vertical space. In a pinch, I think I could fashion the bottom dovetail bit myself, or have my machinist hog one out. Or maybe more, if anyone else would be interested.

There's a special tool for removing M! carbine sights without bending them, how easy are those tools to encounter/obtain/rent? Otherwise, it would be possible to drift the sight assembly out of the dovetail with a brass-ended punch, right?

I think I bought an adaptor for the front handguard, but its been several (several) years since I started the process and then did not install it.

I considered that, Ed, but railed top front hand guards/adapters are a little pricey. Also, mine is an Iver Johnson, and such things made for original GI spec say they won't fit.

I think I'm set, having found one of these for $13. My other M! family member is a new to me Erma EM1-22, which--like other Erma long guns--has a dovetail cast into the top of the receiver. This was handy, and set the motif (rear mounted) I want for the .30 carbine.

Now to borrow a sight removal tool somewhere...
