changing barrels
 

I have a missmatched shooter that needs a new barrel. I am not sure of the details in changing them though. If I take the old barrel off and screw the new one on will I have to trim the shoulder to line up the sights and extracter grove. Or are they machined in such a way that they are all uniform and the frame and barrel threads start at the same spot. So that when they are put together they will line up with out any machine work. I am sure that I am dreaming here. I used to work in a machine shop so I understand that this would be difficult but not impossible. But then again I am amazed they they were able to do the kind of machining that it takes to produce a Luger for the period in time that hey were made.

Sid, am a fairly competent muzzle loading rifle builder. If I were lookin for a new barrel I would get a licensed dealer to ship my reciever off to Hugh on this forum an have him install a new Numrich 6" barrell on it. His prices are very reasonable for what can be a really difficult task. That receiver is not built to take the torque that freeing a 60 to 100 year old barrel requires.

That is just what I was wanting to know. Buying the fixtures and taking a chance at messing up the receiver I think I would be money ahead to have a good gunsmith do it. My background in machining is more in tool and die making. Something that is not as critical as gunsmithing.

I think you can ship your gun to a repair shop yourself and they can return your gun to you. Can anybody comment. This saves the licensed dealer cost.

In any event, if you just ship the top assembly and keep the grip frame you shouldn't need a FFL.

The rules say something to the effect that guns can be sent back to repair, but I think that means the actual manufacturer?

Still Al, the best bet is like you said, just ship the top half, no FFL needed there, :)

Just re-iterating the warning for those unaware.

You can't swap barrels without headspacing & chambering.
