Reloading 30 luger - newbie here
 

Planning to reload 30 luger what r the dies u recommend and where do i get the bullets?
The internet has only a few sites for 30 luger recipes
I have bullseye powder available

There are many recommendations for powder loads in this forum, and at least one old Lyman manual posted as a sticky. Midway and IIRC Huntington have the bullets. Bullseye is not the best choice. I prefer RCBS products exclusively for reloading.

Handloading .30 Luger
 

I use a relatively light load of HP-38 powder (just enough to cycle the action). I bought two sets of .30 Luger dies- Lee and Redding. Brass is hard to find. I began loading with 86 grain soft point bullets meant for the 7.63 Mauser until I was able (through the good graces of GT) to get some really nice Swiss 93 gr. FMJ bullets. I love shooting the .30 Luger even more than the 9mm. :) KW

Back when I bought my first set of dies to reload the 30 Luger brass, I purchased the Lee 3 die set. Perhaps I just got a sub-standard/out of spec set, but I was totally unable to use the sizing or the crimping die. I do use the seating die. I purchased a RCBS sizing die which is which is in spec for this caliber, and functions well. I wanted the shoulder set back a small amount farther than the die set it, so I machined 0.020in. off of the die base. Now I am happy.

I don't know if our GT(on this forum) has any more of the Swiss 92gr .309in. FMJ bullets for sale. They are very nice bullets and load/shoot well. The .308in. 86gr JSP Hornady will work, but you need to be very careful that you have adequate neck tension so as to not get set back. The case neck is short, and needs to be sized correctly for the correct neck tension.

I have loaded a lot of 30 Luger brass with fairly fast powders like Bullseye, and Red Dot. The cartridges work well for some of my 30 luger handguns, but not all. Some time back, I tried some loads with a mid range burner(Unique) and I am more pleased with the finished product.

Every Luger is an individual, and some can be very ammo sensitive. My suggestion would be for you to try your Bullseye powder, and if you can make it work in your Luger, then all is good to go. Lugers are trial and error to get them running 100%.

I sure do wish that I could purchase the Fiocchi 92gr FMJ bullets here in the USA, but I have never seen them for sale here. They would be perfect for my handloads.

I'm thinking AA#7 powder might be about perfect for .30 Luger...I hope to find out one day. I don't really want to shoot my 1900 much, but I think a 6in .30 would be a great flat-shooting field gun. I had a beautiful 6 in 1930's Pacific Arms barrel flat out destroyed during installation on a P08 upper by a so-called Luger "gunsmith" who shall remain nameless.....I have one more 6 in .30 barrel to work with....I need to give G.T. a ring and see if he can help.

Painful to read his posts, and they seem to stop in 2002 [ :( ]. I notice someone else 'redacted' their posts about that time... :D ...I do the same... :rolleyes: ;)

ESKO did pretty much the same thing I did with my 30 Mauser-to-.256 Mauser cartridge conversions. I'm not a fan of freeboring however.
