I know this is a testy topic but…… looking for thoughts on this non dated Mauser. One side is quite good and the other side could use help. What say the group.
Thanks

Left in the holster too long.....

I'd say if it was a holster, it would've done at least some of the "good" side. I'd wager it was left on the floor under a bed on the carpet. I've seen similar before.

Looking at examples in Gortz & Sturgess, it does appear that you have a commercial Mauser Luger. The crown/crown/U stamp as displayed on yours began about serial number 1500v. The C/C/U on the breechblock was first horizontal and later angled. The barrel C/C/U was first applied over or under the serial number but later moved to the front of the front sight block.

Do you mind telling us the full serial number and suffix letter?

pauly, you ask for comments so here's a comment:

I don't know why any knowledgeable person would pay any amount for a Luger in this condition. There are better things to spend money on. It is maybe a $350.00 candidate for a restoration, if one is of that ilk. Otherwise, I see it as a waste of money. As a shooter? I'd be ashamed to be seen on a range with something like this.

It might have a few parts usable for a "shooter", otherwise, using the grips, for example, to improve those on a collectable is boosting the gun. Most collectors are against boosting collectables. (Although many do.)

If one fancies oneself a collector, I'd say stay away from stuff like this. Every dollar spent on less desirables is a dollar less to spend on something worthwhile.

If this was a Cartridge Counter maybe it would be something to talk about, but it's not.

Yakman,

Appreciate the honest opinion. I got into this game late and do not consider myself a true collector like many here. I’m OK bringing this to the range, it still gets looks and is fun to shoot. Everyone starts some where.

Doubs,

Per your request.

Pauly, the C/C/U markings on your Mauser Luger are precisely as described by Gortz & Sturgess as beginning at approximately serial number 1500v. That is, without doubt, a Mauser commercial Luger. The Luger marked exactly as yours and pictured in G&S is serial number 1574v, only 14 numbers higher than yours.
