Heart felt request

To all members,
I'm doing something that goes against my grain. I have never been a dependent nor a religious man, but I am at the point that I will take anything I can get.
My wife of 27 years was diagnosed with throat cancer 2 weeks ago. Today we find out how advanced it is.
I am asking that if anyone has a better connection than I do. Please put in a good word for us.
My sincere thanks, Ron

After a lifetime of being independent and believing that there was nothing I couldn't handle on my own, at age 51, I was diagnosed with incurable cancer of the bone marrow. It brought me to my knees when nothing else would and I asked God for help. Apparently He does listen to prayer as that was five years ago and I'm still around asking stupid questions about Luger pistols. Actually, I think it was worse for my wife than it was for me. But it was a humbling experience and I think I'm the better man for it....no matter how long I live.

Attitude is EVERYTHING with cancer. Don't be afraid to ask questions or question anything the doctor tells you. When in doubt...get a second (or third) opinion. You won't to be as proactive as you possibly can. If this irritates the doc, then look for another one. I can read lab reports better than most oncologists. And if you need help, don't be afraid to ask those who've been there. Most cancer survivors want to help.

EVERYBODY!! Thankyou for your supportive comments and offers. We have a "better" than 50-50 chance of beating it with surgery and radiation.
The Doctor is young and very sharp. He has an extensive advisory team of other Doctors. And is using them to the full extent.
It has not spread to her brain or lungs, as they had feared. Prognosis is much better than expected.
Again, you guys are great! I owe you all a debt of gratitude for your support.

Ron (the tough guy...HA!)

The mean old broad reminded me that it's only been 25 years. Sure seems longer. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Five years ago I called this number and then sent me a book. 800-433-0464. Hopefully, it's still being offered. It's titled "Fighting Cancer" and is written by one of the co founders of H R BLOCK tax service. This man was told he had "terminal" cancer but he got mad and decided he wasn't going to accept that prognosis. It's a great story about how we can survive cancer if we're willing to fight and keep a positive attitude. It helped me and has helped many others whom I've told about it

Greg,
Thankyou! We will give it a try. I'm a firm believer that attitude is 75% of the fight. And nobody's got more attitude than she does. The thing that makes her the happiest is that this is the first Doctor she has ever been to, that told her to go home and eat. Not the opposite.

Thanks Bud, Ron

Ron Smith 12-12-2004 11:59 AM

Again, Thankyou all for your prayers and support.

I cannot express how I feel. Other than to tell you how greatful I am to have friends that I have never met face to face.

The good supportive people of this forum are the best that anyone could ever ask for. I hope that someday soon, I can meet at least most of you and shake your hands. As for the ones that I may never meet, I wish you all of the best, in spirit, if not in the flesh.
I feel humbled, Ron

I've never been on great standing with the big guy up stairs. But I'll pray for her tonight. Nothing but good wishes to your wife. Give her a big hug for me and tell her to fight the good fight. She can beat this.

Rod WMG 12-12-2004 08:34 PM

Ron, I'm praying for you and your wife, your assurance and peace from and with "the God of all comfort" (2 Cor. 1:3) in this very difficult trial.

John Sabato 12-13-2004 11:16 AM

Ron, both you and your wife are in my prayers... I am a staunch believer in the power of prayer as the father of daughter who has been fighting various forms of cancer for almost the last 5 years... we have not made it to one whole year of being cancer free yet, but I know that the prayers of my friends, especially here on this forum are at least partially responsible for her still being here to care for her three young sons as they grow up.

One of my favorite scriptures comes from the book of James 5:14-16

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Strider 12-13-2004 02:52 PM

Ron, just saw your request for prayer. You and your wife will be added to my prayers. It is the least I can do for you.

Sid.

Ron

I have lost my mother, and eldest sister to cancer and when my wife was diagnosed with cancer three years ago it knocked me to my knees. If ever their was something that can knock a man's senses into reality it is this.

My wife's cancer was treated and has been in remission since then, your wife will look to you for support and it is your strength that she will lean on. Now is the time to be at her side and show strength and courage even though you fear the worst.

Cancer can be beaten and does happen,we never hear of the survivor's but the treatment's have become better. Do not give up, you must show to your wife that you believe in her full recovery and although I am not a religous man I will pray for you tonight.

Captain Emo 01-15-2005 11:40 PM

You are in our prayers. The Moore family.
