Crappy Indian made grips.
 

After three months, InterOrdinance finally sent me the replacement grips. I compared them to the truly professionally fitted grips made by CMR Internationalin Great Britain. There is no comparison. The crappy Indian made ones that IO sent had really deep and coarse knurling, twice the size of the CMR grips. Quite incorrect. The wood was good, having a darker appearance with a strong grain contrast, but the shape was off a bit, and they were a little too thick. The relieved areas on the interior were not the specific original shape, but worked. However, the to edge of the left grip was not relieved properly such that when fitted to the pistole, you cannot take the safety off due to interference. I cannot praise the CML grips enough for fit, finish, and appearance. Anyone considering replacing the grips on their shooter Luger should get them.

The Simpson grips look very nice. They appear to have the Mauser contour rather than DWM, so they wouldn't look authentic on an early Luger. But they would look dandy on a custom Luger.

Simpson grips are $100.00. The CMR Intl. grips are only $25.00, which is far less that the quality of the grips would normally fetch.

The picture on the CMR web site looks good, and a $25.00 price tag is excellent if they correctly fit the Luger.

Can you tell us the following about the CMR grips?

1. Do they fit Imperial Lugers well? Some repros are not quite wide enough and leave metal exposed on the side of the front and/or back grip straps.

2. Is the left grip a good fit underneath the safety lever? This is where most repros fail, as they are a poor fit and they are too thin in this area.

I have few questions regarding Luger grips:

What was the LPI (lines per inch) of the original checkering on the Luger grips?

Did the LPI alter over different variations?

$100 is not unreasonable for the CMR grips. With respect to other hanguns, Luger grips are one of the most difficult to make.

In addition, checkering grips takes a long time, even if you use a motorized checkering tool.

I do not know if the CMR grips will fit an early Luger, but they do fit a Mauser type 42 perfectly. They do fit well around the area of the safety lever, perfectly actally. They are EXACT copies of the original grips I removed, which are badly worn but are being saved because they are original. The checking is fine and well defined and not too deep. The LPI appears to be an exact match. The ONLY differences appear to be the front leading edge on the left grip is thicker and not faired into a sharp edge, but this can be easily remedied. The bevels on the top edges of the grips are an exact match. These grips are made by a quailty gunsmith dealing specifically with Lugers, and the attention to detail shows.

I will trade you three pair of plastic grips guaranteed to improperly fit your Luger for your crappy Indian wood grips. One pair even has staghorn styling.

The problem with the cheaper grips is fit. I have a set that looks very nice, fit fine, but interfers with the safety and proper firing / operation of the weapon. And that is AFTER I have modified them on the backs of the grips.

I do believe you get what you pay for.

I have attempted to get into the cmr website several times, when I get to the catalogue page there are no links listed and clicking on anything produces no responce. Is there a problem with the site?

First, find the item in which you are interested in the "Catalog" section. Note the part number and description.

Then, click on "Order Form" at the bottom of the page; this brings up a form which can be filled-in to order anything in the catalog.

A bit confusing, I'll admit.

You would be surprised how inexpensive it is to call the United Kingdom... Send Charles M. Roscoe an email from the CMR website indicating your order and advise him you will call with the credit card number... that way you won't have to worry about the number being compromised by a hacker at his website.

CMR grips not available right now.

I tried ordering a set yesterday and got the following message in an e-mail today:

Dear Sir,

We are currently sold out of the Luger Grips, which were on a promotional
offer. Please try us again in about 2-3 months time.

Oh well, guess I'll just keep using the cheap plastic grips on my shooter for now.

I've purchased a set from CDNN - scans attached of front and back.
Seem OK to me, but I have no originals to compare to. I don't know about the comparison of checkering to originals either. Fit appears good to me on 1917 DWM, but I'm no expert - I'll defer to others on the forum.

I just did minor clean up of milling fibers with a razor knife - and a couple of applications of Watco oil.

I have just purchased two sets of the CDNN Luger grips, I have original 1917 and 1920 grips to compare them to when I receive them. I will let you know my thoughts when I can compare them, although I'm no expert either.

Actually, comparing them by themselves in photos is not the most informative. You need to picture them on the gun so that we can see the fit: particularly the area at the front left where it curves under the trigger plate; the fit at the seft back around the safety lever and frame cuts; the thickness and fit along the front and back grip straps; and the fit at the cuts at the bottom of the grips.

Fritz et al, Your CDNN repro PO8 grips appear to be the Italian made ones that they have been selling for years now. Unfortunately, they are cut too low below the safety lever (so that they won't chip out like the originals do) and also at the top of the left side. As with all new repro wood grips, they are made a bit oversized, so that they can be fitted to any luger frame. I've never been crazy about the dark verticle grain running thru these, but the Watco's stain does even it out a bit. TH

Yes, but the dark vertical stripes seem to be evident on many untouched original grips. I think they're about the best you can find for under $60.
