Any collectors from Canada here?

I'd like to purchase a restricted Luger (Arty, Navy or re-barrelled shooter) sometime later this summer. Can any Canadian collector point me in the right direction?

thanks very much

John Sabato 06-11-2004 11:39 AM

We have several collectors from Canada in this forum. I am sure that one of them will respond as soon as they have had a chance to read your request.

the first member name I can think of is Kidvett... do a search for his posts and when you find one, you can send him a private message.

Hello Naugler,

As a few of us, I'm also a Canadian Collector.....German Military Pistols ( mostly Lugers.....) Have been for a few years :)

Basic stuff to know:
Do you want an original piece or a shooter ?? .30 Cal or 9 mil ??

Restricted originals would take you in the following categories: Contract piece ( 4 3/4 in 30 Cal ) Arty ( 8 in 9mm, expensive & not too common here ) and last Navy ( 6 inch, VERY VERY EXPENSIVE & close to impossible to find !! )

Shooter built up guns would be in the $600-$850 Cdn range depending on condition, finish & options....

Feel free to email / PM me for info....I'll be glad to help !! :D

John,
Thanks for the reference !! I havent been much on the LF lately......summer activities taking over.......

Hey Mark, what would an artillery Luger fetch in this country? Just in average original condition, all matching, no holster?

kidvett 06-12-2004 10:02 AM

Hi Josef,

Arty's are usually found in the $1500-1800 range.....A lucky find would be at $1200 and high end at $2500 ( who !! pays that much here for a pistol ?? ) If one comes your way, BUY IT !!

My observations in the last few years are showing that Arty's have been scarce on the market due mostly to private Collections & Exportation. They were more common lets say just 5 years ago......but that can be said of a lot of Collector Pistols !! When is the last time you saw a nice German Hi Power here in Canada ??

MARK <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

naugler 06-12-2004 05:00 PM

Well...I'm just getting started on Lugers and there's no way I could justify paying over $1000 for an Artillery Luger. As I need to find a model with a barrel length over 4.2" my best and only bet is probably a re-barreled shooter. I want to shoot 9mm not .30.
The only retail outlet in Canada that I have found a re-barreld restricted Luger is the Collector Source. Price $650. I have included a link below. The pistol in question is the Finnish Luger about 1/3 of the way down the page.

http://www.collectorssource.com/category.asp?catid=12

I originally thought that this was a bit expensive for a re-barrled Luger, but I haven't been able to find anything else to compare it to.

Any feedback on this would be apprechiated.

kidvett 06-12-2004 05:23 PM

Naugler,

A ``Shooter `` 9mm ?? How about this one ??

I honestly don't know enough about Lugers to know if your making me an offer on a shooter or making fun of my situation...

kidvett 06-13-2004 02:06 AM

Naugler,

Dont get me wrong here......I posted this photo to show you what a nice ( in my opinion ) ``shooter ``Luger can be alike !! This specific piece was built by me with a little help from my Gunsmith......for a fellow that turned away because of pricing.....so yes it could be FS....

Like I stated previously and John pointed out to you, I can give you information & tips that can perhaps help you find what you want......and remember that we all started somewhere.......

Just send PM or email & I'll gladly respond :D

Friendly yours,

MARK

Naugler,

The Finnish Luger you are considering is a reasonable deal. It appears to be a legitimate Finnish rebarrel and if it has the Finnish â??SAâ? in a rectangle on the left receiver and a marking on the barrel that is a â??Tâ? in a triangle inside a circle, it is correct. This is an acceptable Finnish Luger and is worth the $650 asking price if in decent condition. Finnish Lugers quite often have mis-matched serial numbers and are refinished, so that is why they do not command a very high price, but they are good guns and the 9mm caliber makes them particularly attractive as shooters. If I didnâ??t already have a similar Finnish Luger and didnâ??t have to contend with import bureaucracy, I would consider purchasing it.

Thanks very much for the info Ron.

Some Italian info. on the Finnish lugers :

I'm living in Montreal right now and I was hoping to get a sweet deal on a luger up here. Some things I dont understand... in Canada you cant buy a regular P-08 luger but you can get an AR-15...? And back home I can buy lugers all day long but cant get an AK. Oh, the irony! Actually, I have found a decent shooter grade luger for $330 US. All matching 1917 Erfurt, with (gulp) aftermarket mag and a recent reblue (lots left). If I bought it, by the time it get home it would run me $450 US... is that still a decent price for a shooter grade WWI pistol? Keep in mind, this is strictly to take to the range (and cuddle with in the evenings). I'm wondering if the generic mag makes this not worth the cash, or is it still something of a deal? This would be my first luger, but by no means my first firearm.

Cheers,
Erich

John Sabato 11-23-2004 10:20 AM

Erich, welcome to the Lugerforum.

If you can get that Luger home for $450.00 LEGALLY then you better buy it. Even Shooter Lugers are worth every penny of that in today's gun market...and the prices will NEVER go down, only up.

The price of the gun can be affected by whether or not it has a matching, or correct period magazine (as in price increase), but the gun itself is worth what you have been quoted. Aftermarket mags can be purchased for as little as $25-35...

Erich 11-23-2004 11:42 AM

Ok, that is what I figured, so I will put the wheels in motion. Thankfully, it will all be legal; living in California makes one paranoid about knowing all the laws. It will have to pass through a few dealers hands on the way to me but it will show up eventually, assuming the ATF approves my Form 6.

Thanks John!
Cheers! http://forums.lugerforum.com/lfupload/1917lugerrt.jpg http://forums.lugerforum.com/lfupload/1917lugerleft.jpg

John Sabato 11-23-2004 12:45 PM

Looks like a great shooter Erich... Best of Luck... Even if you just get it across the canadian border legally, you could get your money back without taking it into the republik of calfornia...

Just for info - what makes a firearm in Canada Restricted or Prohibited?

DougT 11-24-2004 12:38 AM

That's Kalifornia JS--get it right! LOL

kidvett 11-24-2004 12:42 AM

Jerry B,

MY pleasure to tell you a bit about Canadian Firearms Laws...........

Weapon Classification:

Prohibited: Any handgun with a barrel lenght of 105mm & less + all 25 & 32 Cal Handguns.......( some exceptions like Walther's GSP Target pistol ) But an old S&W 32 Long with a 6 in bbl is Prohibited.......( This classification was put forward to eliminate ``small hideout`` guns from the market........ )

Restricted: Handguns with a barrel lenght of 106mm & more.......( for clarification, a military P08 is Prohibited due to it's 4 inch ( 102mm ) barrel........

Assault Rifles, Converted ( SA only ) military weapons & genuine Auto weapons ( like your Class III ) are.........of course Prohibited........

Permit Classification:

An individual can have various permit Class to possess weapons from different categories. It is all based on the ``Grandfathered`` system, aka: you must had this kind of weapon registered to you at the reference date which still allows you to buy more of the same class. Prohibited Class Handguns reference date is Feb 15th 1995, Autos in Jan 1st 1978.......get it...

So if a new guy wants to buy a P08, he cannot !! Unless he gets the barrel changed for a longer one...

So what history to come will show is a dissapearance of those ``Prohibited Weapons`` from the population as they can only be transfered by means of ``last will`` to direct descendents ( kids ) or be transfered to individuals having the appropriate weapons class....( the ``young bunch`` of those are early 30s at this time ).......

I hope this little info gives you the picture........

MARK :)

I'm one of those having the Prohibited Class permits.........

Erich 11-24-2004 03:18 PM

kidvett's definitely got the story right. Since I'm living in Montreal right now I had originally planned on getting a canada PAL license and buying the luger through the system until I found out is was prohibited. Lucky for me I can export it to the US. Your right, eventually these will dry up, get cut up, or be demilled. As a matter of fact, the luger I am buying was for sale $400 Can or $450 Can demilled! The fact that demilling is listed as an option is depressing! What I dont get is why its so difficult to export; if Canada doesnt want these lugers why dont they let us buy them all from them? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

lconnolly 11-30-2004 09:12 PM

I've not been on the forum for a while, but i do own a 'grandfathered' prohibited P-08 owner in Canada (the grandfathering process took a year and was aided by the fact that I knew the lawyer who wrote the regulation).

I'll also take the opportunity to thank the forum community for being as informative and helpful as they are.
