Cheap $335 1911 ati

Got my new 45 today. I read a bunch before I bought one, and really its just to play with. I haven't done a Match grade barrel yet and hate to mess up my Colt. Its a well made pistol, from the Philippines and for the price seems like a deal. The finish is parkerized, which is just a step up from galvanized. If I can actually get it to shoot really well I might send it off and have them Boron coat it. I read where they to a slide for $125 and the frame for the same price. They offer lots of different colors and even have a war finish that looks pretty cool. So hopefully it will shoot well and I can make bigger holes.

If you take it out, shoot it and oil it, parkerized gets very nice looking. Very military:)

Where'd you get one for less than $350?

Puretexan 09-09-2017 07:45 AM

Smokey Mountain guns and ammo. They don't charge for CC's and give you free shipping. Also they throw in a free pistol rug. It only comes with one magazine
so I ordered a couple Chip McCormick's. I pulled it all apart and its a well made
pistol IMHO. Hope it shoots decent. The lifetime warranty sounds positive too.

It comes with nice grips but I had a set of the Hogue ones so stuck them on for a little
added comfort.

Ships on the second day.

Like the no frills military look. Like the parkerized finish too

I do prefer classic grips. I'm a sucker for the double diamond pattern of the early 1911s. So, probably I would prefer the original grips. Tend to shoot better with them also.

Hope it shoots well.

Nice gun for that price, shoot the heck out of it and enjoy it!

These grips came with it. They are dark reddish and unless I can bleach them, they
won't go back on the gun. Might find some nice Colts without the logo.

They also come with a usable sturdy foam lined case. The rug thrown in by Smokey
Mountain is a nice touch too.

Took carb cleaner and shot the finish off the grips. Then hit them with some light oil.
They look better but still reddish. Must be mahogany instead of walnut.

You might expect mahogany from the PI.:)

I just don't understand why you buy a pistol and right away want to change the finish! Just shoot it.:D

I saw a "real" Colt .38 super at the LGS this am, for $900 I almost bought it for you.

Puretexan 09-09-2017 02:27 PM

This one is a 45 acp since I have two Colt 38 supers already. The whole reason to buy
one of these was to change it. The only thing I saw anybody say was bad is the recoil
spring. I ordered a Wolf replacement today. I love taking them apart and changing stuff
They were suppose to bring the 45 ammo I ordered. It didn't show up so I didn't get a
chance to shoot it yet.

Like it better that way. Reddish grips or not.:D

My only qualm, I find the checkering way to big.

With some USGI repro grips it would be just what the doctor ordered. :D

alvin 09-09-2017 04:52 PM

This is a nice looking gun. If it's good quality (I mean, shooting quality), please let me know. I will buy one.

Just watched RIAC session today. Many items' price, if I borrow a phrase from member of another forum -- "expensive to death". All millionaire collectors went to auction these days pumping the price up. That's not a healthy play.

Puretexan 09-09-2017 06:17 PM

Kurusu I will eventually pickup a set of the double diamond Colt ones without the logo.
Not really suppose to be a pretty pistol just governmentish and accurate.

Alvin should have a accuracy test report sometime next week when the ammo gets here. I have lots of ammo here but not a drop of 45 ACP.

Sort of what I did to the Gold Cup that had a set of Pachmayr type grips when I got it.

I am not a fan of the Hogue/Pachmayr rubber grips. I like the .45 to 'settle' in my hand when I squeeze off that first round. Wood is OK but the plastic military grips are, for me, the best. :)

Took a look at the specs.

They are indeed mahogany.

Puretexan 09-09-2017 08:16 PM

Never saw the specs , but did watch Hickcock 45 shoot one several times on Youtube
to seal the deal. If he didn't have problems then I shouldn't have them either. I also dumped my bag of bones on the floor to see whether to buy or not.:)

DonVoigt 09-09-2017 08:37 PM

I "need" a bag of bones, that would make it easy to justify buying most anything- just dump it out and study a bit- "Yep, better buy right away!" ;)

Puretexan 09-09-2017 08:45 PM

Yeah Don I had a bag of bones before and she wouldn't let me buy anything. I divorced
her and got a hefty one. Life has been better ever since.

Ok my for real Colt on the left and the ATI on the right. My Colt is a 1983 series 80 when they were suppose to be made better. I won't say too much bad about my Colt
because its a tack driver, but the slide fit on the ATI is way better. Smooth as a baby's rear.

alvin 09-10-2017 03:35 PM

They are pretty much same. In open market, these COLT actually is not competitive, its quality is not much higher (if it's higher), but it's much more expensive. That's one reason their business is not very shiny now.

Puretexan 09-10-2017 03:57 PM

Yeah they have kinda fallen off , but still get some higher prices for their guns.
You check any early model Colts and they are through the roof ,price wise.

Ok just got back from the range. It shot outstanding. My shooting buddy had some
45 lead reloads and they functioned perfect. Never skipped a beat and the sights
were dead on. I am impressed and extremely happy with my purchase. From 25 yards both hands.

rhuff 09-11-2017 02:52 PM

It would be hard to complain about that 1911 with 100% function plus good accuracy.....win-win!!

Puretexan 09-11-2017 03:50 PM

Shoots perfect and is accurate all for the low price of $335 to the house. Two
hours later and I'm still grinning. Heck may buy another.:)

Looks good. I will buy one. I still have a few boxes of .45ACP ammo but I have no gun to shoot..

Puretexan 09-11-2017 06:31 PM

Since Sheepherder said the black plastic grips look better , I ordered a pair. $8 free
shipping. I will give them a looksee in a couple days. Maybe he is right. Cheap to find
out anyway.

Military are available in brown and black plastic. I have two pair of Argentine M1927 grips in black Bakelite. I just like the way the plastic/Bakelite grips feel while shooting. Especially if they're a bit worn (no sharp points on checkering). Your hand just naturally slides into the best grip, not like the new checkered wood grips that don't slide at all.

And it doesn't matter if you get them greasy/oily. And even if it does matter, it doesn't matter if it matters. :roflmao:

Puretexan 09-11-2017 09:21 PM

I think for $8 it doesn't matter. If they look wonky then it doesn't matter.:)

Sure is a good feeling when the holes appear right where you pointed it. Three
of our retired group shot it. All were amazed at the accuracy from a cheap pistol.

You got yourself a good shootin iron.

You did good shooting too.

With those kind of grips on a park finish, you'll get a USGI look that shoots good to boot. I like the ideia.

Puretexan 09-12-2017 07:07 AM

Being in the old side of life, I don't normally shoot that good with fixed sights. These
have a bigger back notch and were really easy to see. The person that furnished the reloads, said they were light target loads and they were pleasant to shoot. I might be getting into hand loading.
Also I found if you add the word Bakelite to $8 grips they jump to $150. Need to find a mold and figure out how to mix that stuff up.

You can still buy original grips for around $30, keep looking.
GI grips are not "bakelite" anyway, so don't add that!

Good shooting.:D

In this way, it does look better.

This gun,,, too easy. In gun playing, too easy brings in limited amount of fun. It may sound weird, "hobby needs effort to build up is real hobby, lack of fund is all time concern" (derived from this movie review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5Idd44iZmc). It's always something making people feel "not easy to come" attracts them. No matter at which level they are playing.

Puretexan 09-16-2017 06:02 PM

Not sure Alvin...Cheap felt good to me and I have some more expensive ones.
The fact that it shoots good just stops me from really adding much other than
just cheap fluff. Ebay has my number now.

Now there is a look that works real well in my eyes. Nothing fancy......just function!!

Puretexan 09-17-2017 04:02 PM

Got my new shipment of ammo. Heading out to the range again tomorrow. Hope
it shoots good with factory stuff , instead of reloads. Bought some Blazer Brass and
several boxes of the Magtech. I have had good luck with both brands in 9MM so I
have my fingers crossed it will be good in 45 ACP.
I'm really pleased with the new grips and hopefully the new Wilson slide spring will work well too. The one that came with it did fine ,but seem to be the only complaint
about it from anybody so decided it was a cheap swap so might as well do it

Douglas Jr. 09-17-2017 09:06 PM

I can understand your excitement. I just got my IMBEL M1911A1, the Brazilian .45 clone.
IMBEL is the former "Fabrica de Itajuba", the same Army-owned company that produced the licensed FN FAL for decades here. Also, Imbel was the manufacturer of all Springfield Armory 1911s until 2012 or so.
It has this GI issue look, with black plastic grips and black epoxi finish, the same found on FAL assault rifles.
