1912 Erfurt on Gunbroker
2 Attachment(s)
Wouldn't the numbers on the barrel have halos on this year also does the barrel witness mark look a little off
|
|
Wow! 141 pictures!
You have to be really anal to post 141 pictures! IOW, a Luger Collector! :p (You have to be really anal to take 141 pictures!) I get the idea that the seller expects a high price for this 1912 Erfurt...Is that realistic??? |
I don't think the price right now is out of line.
|
Hi Wayne,
I believe that no halos on a 1912 Erfurt is correct, at least the ones I've examined haven't had them. The exact purpose of the witness mark is somewhat controversial, my belief is that it indicates any clockwise rotation of the barrel caused by repeated firing, the small shift shown in the photo is pretty typical of a gun that has seen a lot of use. As to the price, this Erfurt has an interesting and desirable unit mark and, in my opinion the price is not out of line so far. Regards, Norm |
Yeah I think I am going to go after this one
|
I would make sure you have an inspection period.
It is possible the barrel may have been re blued. Bob |
I know I am not a Luger expert, but wouldn't the absence of halo's indicate that the stamps in question were made after leaving the factory, or in any case, not using the original factory procedures? Presence of halo's would indicate compression of the metal at the edges of the stamp at the instant of high impact stamping? On the other hand, there seems to be no evidence of grinding down or refinishing from these photos posted. Looks like a nice gun!!
|
IMO the condition of the gun does not match the condition of the barrel..There is no wear on the muzzle barrel band.
Bob |
Mmmmm.... Is there any other way to tell whether the barrel has been replaced? Have to be really careful with these expensive guns... I"m trying to learn all I can- there's so much information on this forum.... remarkable!

The land diameter is rather rare too..."8,82"...If it was not 'real', it would likely have the more common '8,83' I would think... It also has a nice screaming chicken on the barrel...That all makes this moron think it is genuine Erfurt, even if a replacement... |
Ahh OK.
But would even an "official upgrade" detract from the "general collector value?" I guess at the end of the day, a collector piece is worth what a buyer is willing to pay at any given instant. Maybe I / we.. think too much in terns of "$ value" and not enough in terns of "I like this gun!! I'll buy it for $XX !" IF the buyer is happy, and IF has purchased the gun with an accurate knowledge of what has been paid for, then done is done. 2 big IF's here. Nobondy likes to pay a collector's price for a mismatched abused parts gun. Please note, I am NOT saying the gun described here is mismatched and abused! Looks nice to me! That's one of the advantages of te helpful atmosphere on this forum... a wealth of experts and their willingness to share. |
Not only that but the hold open was added so it definately saw some Tim in an armory!
|
Hope you don't mind, but how do you tell that the hold open has been added? I do not see that myself. Not because I disagree but because I am on a steep learning curve. Beautiful gun
|
There is a visable pin installed on the right side with an Erfurt proof. This was retrofitted after the pistol was made.

...But if you delve deep enough into the 141 pics, there are several closeups of the hold-open... |
You have a sharp eye. Thank you!!

But this looks good to me [admittedly I'm an idiot when it comes to Lugers] : and I think that armory upgrades and unit marks add to the provenance of this Luger... :) It's at $1675 right now with a deadline of 7:30pm tonight...I think it will go in the $2500 range...At least I would think that is the seller's hope...(It's not mine btw)... |
Agreed!!!!
|
Congratulations to Wayne8661! Let us know how she looks in the flesh.
dju |
Thanks gents I think it was a steal!!!
|
1675 as the hammer falls. WHEW. Should have it in a few days. I'll post pics
|
I was watching it since the beginning, interesting luger.
Decided no need to bid against you, I hope it is a good one! |
Thanks don
|
It's a super gun and all original.
|
Just wondering, just how many proof marks are on an Erfurt? More than ten? Eric

Thank You Don , I would have to take one apart to count them but the last time I did I lost a piece. I was lucky it was a unmarked DWM! There are 42 parts in the new model, many of which are hidden! Simply, Are all 42 Erfurt parts marked?

Rich, A simple question for those who may need to replace a particular part on an Erfurt. Are all parts Erfurt proofed to that gun?
|
Eric, I think what Rich is saying is that you have the answer right in front of you. You have shown that you possess an extensive library on Lugers. Researching on your own should be easy for a former attorney. There are plenty of videos on the net which will teach you how to disassemble a Luger without losing any parts so you even have a "hands on" answer. Won't it be gratifying to do it yourself. "give a man a fish (answer) and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" :D

Rich my short term memory is non existent! Subdural Hematoma~ I can recall my NJ Drivers license when I was 17 "B7669-07024-56" But I forget what I had breakfast. My posts sometimes take me an hour or more! I thank God for being able to remember Debbys' name who actually saved my life! I'm doing the best I can and can type with only one finger. Thank God I am left with one working trigger finger for all of you the best I can~ All I ask for is some patience even and even when I'm repetitive! I promise I am trying to do my best!! I am treating my disability as a gift instead of a hinderence. Debby taught me to treat my disability as an ability! I had to relearn to talk after a tracheomony and type with only one finger!. Thank God every moment that I can read and understand our posts! Luv Ya All! I do welcome your posts, advice and treat them as another challenge. Debby and my 20 lugers are my world!! Our forum is more therapy than any doctor could prescribe. It took two years to be able to relearn how to walk. Debby wouldn't marry me until I could walk her down the isle unassisted! Thank You All! You have all have provided me the best healing and lugers that are far more healing than any drugs!the best drugs! Love Heals~~ Thank You All And God bless us all!
|
You're very welcome Eric.

Its like waiting for Christmas!
|
Ohhh yeesss! I'm in a similar position- I agreed to purchase a 1918 DWM reblued shooter from a forum member here, but I have to wait until August before I can bring it home and put it on my permit. (Dutch law)
Details in the thread: "Found a nice shooter!" in the New Collectors Forum http://forum.lugerforum.com/showthread.php?t=36454 |
So frustrating knowing that it is now sitting in a post office 15 minutes from me and I have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to get it. Lol
|
Yeessss.... but- won't be long now.... looking forward to your photos...
