Luger forum unavailable several hours / day
It seems like every day there is an extended period when the LugerForum will not pull up on the computer. "Website unavailable" or some such digital gibberish. A problem that I rarely have with other websites.
Now while I admit that I'm technically challenged, this happens so regularly that I'm wondering if everyone has this problem or if it is just me. dju |
I have heard others say that, but I have not experienced it - and I check at different times although not as often as I used too
|
i have also had outages...including tonight.....just thought it was me.....tom
|
For some reason there seems to be a slow response. I think the browser times out before the site comes up. I have had to retry two or three times before it launches. (But it's worth it :))
|
I'm not sure if this helps, but if i hit the link that's for the forum on an email that i have received from the forum, it connects right away, however, if i just try to log on fresh, it has not responded for several minutes or sometimes hours. at first i thought it was my server, but i noticed the discrepancy when i opened other web pages, it was quick!
|
I had the same feeling then I noticed that other web pages worked normally.
All seems to be alright now. |

Richard,
That is the same way I log in and I frequently get the delay. Ron |

I was having the same problem every other day then for the past 2 days could not get on.
I just googled the forum and used that link, which worked and saved it, http://forum.lugerforum.com/index.php |
Get the error message, "Server not found" occasionally. Usually loads when I go back to the Luger home page (where the Luger is operating) and and click again on the Message Board button.
|
I have also experienced connection problems over the past few days.
My 'Favorites' link to this forum reads www.lugerforum.com . I spoke to Jerry Burney this evening about this and he sent me the link he uses and it is forum.lugerforum.com (no www.) and it has been working just fine. Bill |
For the forum moderators - perhaps you can check on the hosting facility to see if they are experiencing any issue or even backing up systems? I have noticed the time-outs in the past - usually on a weekend, however, this has been a major outage for the past two weeks. Again, perhaps the provider is performing upgrades that may put the site down for a while?

I have not personally experienced the types of outages that folks are reporting, ...not at home or at work... perhaps there is something that all those who have been reporting issues have in common? But I am not sure what that might be... |
...not at home or at work... John! We have been meaning to discuss your productivity at the next staff meeting...

Don't know if this will help on diagnostics or not. I have also been having intermittent login problems, but the problems seem to be consistent when there is a failure, but the failures are not consistent. Some days I have no problems at all with www.lugerforum.com. Other times I cannot log in for a day or two.
If I log in at WWW.Lugerforum.com, when I cannot get in, I get the page with the luger graphic going through its firing sequence. On the left side there is a black graphics box with selections of forums from "Message Board" down to "Luger Forum Centerfolds". I do not know what link loads this black box graphics and forum "pick list" on the top, but I believe the problem lies in that loading and/or its interface with the host server. Most of the time when I have a problem with loading, instead of the pick list, I get a black box at the bottom left of the screen, but the block does not go to the top nor do the names of the forum choices appear. It is in the loading of this box and choice list where the screen seems to jam. The luger graphic continues to function, but all I can do is exit. When this is happening, I can try to load the URL on my tablet which uses a WIN 8.1R system (instead of the WIN7 on my laptop) or even on my Kindle using still a different operating system. I get the lock up at the same point with all three. Eventually behind the screen on the Win7 and Win8.1 systems, behind the luger graphics I can see part of a message screen similar to the ones others have posted on this link stating the URL is not found. Again this only happens when I log in at www.Lugerforum.com. When I log in at Forum.lugerforum.com, I skip the luger graphics page - and I have yet to have a loading failure when logging in this way. This seems to be consistent with what others are reporting. Just a suggestion of where to look for the problem that some are having..... Doug |

I was having a similar problem as others here with the forum being out. I switched from Internet Explorer to Google Chrome, and have had no problems since the switch. I have high speed internet.

Just experienced a 'Network Timeout'. This is NOT the usual error msg I get ("forum.lugerforum.com not found") but it seems to be the one others are commenting on...
Now I'm getting it... :soapbox: |

OK, just had the 'address not found' error msg. Not a timeout...No idea why...
Five minutes later, it's found... |
Forum Moderators:
The forum was down again yesterday afternoon around 4:30 pm Central time for about 45 minutes. If you go to the command prompt and issue a 'ping' command: ping lugerforum.com There are no replies from 72.71.199.44. This morning forum is available and a ping command to 72.71.199.44 shows the board is up. Mark |
Mark, I am surprised that John allows a ping.
What seems consistent is that folks use www.lugerforum.com and fewer problems with forums.lugerForum.com Seems to me that folks should save the second one... . Also, I use Firefox and chrome.... |

The problem with intermittent access may be the Internet Service Provider's Name Servers. In order for your computer to find the Lugerforum server's IP address, it has to convert the canonical address using a nameserver. It's done under the covers and normally invisible and fast.
Each ISP operates their own Name Servers, and something may be interfering with their operation. When it fails, open a command prompt window and enter the command: nslookup lugerforum.com and see what happens. Then try nslookup forum.lugerforum.com and see if that works. If you have intermittent nameserver problems, you can manually add one that Google maintains. It is done in the network configuration for the network adapter on your computer. The Google nameserver is at IP address 8.8.8.8 Marc |
I must admit having after having thousand posts, I have never noticed it down no more than a few times and each time I was given notice on the site! Thank You John and Ed for the privalege. Thank You all our Heros behind the scenes that makes my life even more enjoyable and for free!!!~~ Eric

Marc:
While I agree with your statements on the name servers, I don't think this is the issue here. If you ping lugerforum.com, you should get a reply from 72.71.199.44. The local provider will resolve the lugerforum.com to 72.71.199.44. However, in this case, I pinged the server directly with 'ping 72.71.199.44' and there was no reply. There are no name server involved in this, so I do believe there is an intermittent issue with the hosting of lugerforum.com Mark |
i just checked, and I do get ping responses from that static address.
During a failure period, try using "traceroute". I'm on CenturyLink's ISP network locally in North Carolina. I route through: embarqhsd.net (backbone) quest.net (backbone) cogentco.net (several nodes) myfairpoint.net (several nodes - John's local ISP network) During a failure, "traceroute" will tell you where the relay is failing on the way to John's local network. Reliability and access to the forum from here is good. If I were to guess, I'd suggest something is failing on your side of a backbone connnection or in all the "cogent" and "fairpoint" nodes things route through... Marc |

Guys:
Hopefully this will assist in the troubleshooting. I am going to email these files to John S too. This morning at 6:30 am Central time I could not access the site. I attempted nslookup, ping and trace route commands and have the data. When I got home, I did the exact same steps when the site is up and running. It is not a DNS issue with local providers. It is not a routing issue. I suspect there is something with the server (perhaps a backup that is causing the NIC card not to respond? Ive seen this). Seems a bit contradictory, as I use a third party monitor tool to watch my servers, FQDNS, circuits, individual sites, etc. Attached is the stat log from Lugerforum and the server. I've been in the IT industry since 1987 - and this site since 2001 - so, what do I know ;)
If it's down for an hour or so - I'm usually backing up the DB, making a hardware change - whatever - so those downtimes are those I'm aware of? Anyway - I'll continue to monitor the site. The triggers below poll the site every 5 minutes from seven locations around the world. Thanks, John D. |
