Hello, my name is james
I'am a new member to the forum and just wanted to say hello to all

I was born in Northern Ireland and grew up in the Northwest of the United Kingdom, I now live in Oregon here in the pacific northwest.

I own mostly modern firearms, Glock pistols, various Akm47 type rifles and my main interest is sporting clays and trap shooting and so I enjoy nice over/under shotguns and side by side shotguns for upland birds.

Recently I have become interested in some of the guns my father owned back in the old country that I remember from my childhood.

He (my father) owned some nice shotguns and a couple of old enfield .303 bolt actions

but what I remember the most was his pistols, He owned a Browning 1910 in .32acp
Beretta 1934 in 9mm kurz (.380 acp?)
Broomhandle Mauser in 7.63?
Browning Hi-powers (one was Nazi marked the other was Spanish I think?) 9mm

But my favorite pistol was the German luger he owned I remember it was all black except the trigger and it was a 9mm

Anyways he turned them all in for destruction back in 1997 when the handgun ban came into law in the UK.

I have been in the states now for a long old time and have mostly enjoyed owning and shooting modern weapons but I recently started to become interested in the guns I remember my father owning.

I put a DWM commercial luger on lawaway at a local FFL and I think I will pick it up on Saturday. Its a .30 luger and I have so far had a heck of a time finding ammo for it, I think I paid too much for it too, wish I had found this forum before I decided to buy the pistol but it was an impulse buy.

I look forward to reading and learning more from this very interesting forum

Ay up James, first of all welcome to this forum, I'm sure here you will find a lot of Luger enthusiasts that will be ready to give you an opinion about your purchase.
Don't worry we all make mistakes, even the most knowledgeable and wisest of us do make mistakes.
Did you get a collectible or a shooter? If you can it would be interesting to see some photos of your Luger-

You certainly came to the right place to get an education about Luger's Bill , but a word of caution, with probably over 300 varieties they can become an obsession, but one that can bring a lifetime of enjoyment. Be sure to purchase a few good current reference books on the subject if you think they are the way you want to go.

I also wish to welcome you to the addiction that we all refer to as Luger procurement. They are like "one peanut", but a great hobby. Currently, ammo is in short supply, but appears to be improving. Use ammoseek to try and locate some 30 Luger ammo. Fiocchi is by far the most reasonably priced, and works just fine. Try to purchase FMJ ammo, as it seems to work the best for many of us. The Winchester ammo is waaaaay too expensive.

Welcome to the forum! Don't worry about paying to much, as soon as you get it in your hands and maybe shoot a few rounds with it, you'l forget all about that (I did).

welcome! Try to be frugal in your spending for Lugers. You will find quite often that the person selling has no more of a real idea of what its worth than you do. Read and ask for help. Ask for help and read.
The old masters know their stuff. Also, they have the eyes of a hawk. They are just super excellent at spotting flaws.

Hi James, and welcome to the forum!

If you do become interested in collecting Lugers, I suggest that you attend "Luger University"...

In addition to reading what you can find here, it consists of acquiring some of the better Luger reference books for the specific period(s) you're interested in.

Investment in the books and adequate study will save you much more than the books cost down the line...

And... you'll know more of the history and specific characteristics of Lugers!

Thank you all for the warm welcome, Hopefully I can pick up my luger sometime this weekend, but with thanksgiving right around the corner im trying to be careful with my money. But the urge to go bring it home is winning at the moment so I may just go get it in the morning.

I want the gun is a shooter so im not really concerned too much with the cosmetic condition. I just wish I had looked into the availability of .30 luger ammo first. I did manage to pick up 6 boxes of fiocchi fmj so I at least have some ammo to test the pistol out with.

I'll be sure to post pictures of the commercial luger as soon as bring it home. On a side note after looking at some of the pictures on here Im pretty sure the luger my father used to own was the 'black widow' variant, man I wish I still had that gun!

.30 Luger is original. It is really a nice cartridge compared to the 9mm. Ammunition for a .30 Luger should never be your concern. Get the gun and worry about the ammunition later.

Borshardt invented the Luger with the .30 Luger and then it was expanded to the 9mm. The .30 Luger is the original design by Borshardt.

Hi, Everyone thanks again for the warm welcome to the forum, I have been spending too much money recently with thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays quickly approaching and a really amazing deal on a rifle I couldn't pass up so unfortunately the luger has still been on layaway at the FFL for the last couple of weeks, curiosity has got the better of me now after reading and watching so many videos about PO-8 luger pistols, so im going to go pick the luger up in the morning before work.

I actually don't remember the exact condition the pistol is in as it has been a while since I put it on layaway so its going to be a surprise for me (hopefully a good surprise)

I still only have the 6 boxes of fiocchi .30 luger ammo I bought, I decided not to buy anymore .30 luger ammo until I have actually fired the pistol, however I think I will try and order a mec gar magazine for the gun before I fire it.

I will be sure to take a bunch of pictures once I get the pistol home and upload them here so I can get opinions and info about the gun.

Only 15 hours till the FFL opens in the morning I feel like a kid on Christmas eve!

If ya find a Mec Gar - buy it, then let the rest of us know where you got it as they've been impossible to find this year. There *is* one on eBay right now for $75, which is more than I'm willing to pay for a $40 mag. YMMV.

G.T. here on the forum is tops at reconditioning old mags, BTW.

Well I picked up my luger this morning, Trying my best to upload some pictures, will try and upload and update my post

Ok these pictures are not very good but im trying.

Ok so I think the pictures of my luger are uploaded, but I don't think they are very good.
Hopefully somebody can give me an opinion on my luger, I finally picked it up this morning, took it to work with me field stripped it, all the numbers I can find match on all the parts, the bore looks decent, Still wish it was a 9mm and not .30 but that's because I do not handload so the ammo seems to be expensive and hard to find.
I wanted this gun as a shooter and it seems ok so far (looks like a previous owner put some paint on the backstrap of the pistol at some point)
I thought it would be easy to buy a replacement magazine my latest CDNN catalog had mec gar p08 mags listed at $27 bucks each but I guess they do not actually have any!

I really have wanted a luger for a long time and im glad I have one now but im kind of regretting paying so much for a .30 commercial luger with one magazine in rough condition

I'll try post some better pictures when I figure out how, and if my fellow forum members have an opinions or information about this pistol its most welcome

the serial number is 9368 and every part stamped '68'

hopefully I can get out to the woods and put a few rounds through this pistol soon.

My .30 luger ammo I got off gunbroker (just in case anybody is looking for some)

It looks as if at one point someone ground off the stock lug and then applied paint to the metal.

Yes it looks like the black paint on the backstrap of the pistol has been there for a very long time, it looks like some kind of model paint. I really do not know very much about luger pistols, I read that the stock lugs were ground off commercial lugers prior to import in the 1920's. The rest of the finish on the pistol looks original to me as the color looks the same and the wear looks pretty even. I would be really interested to hear everyones opinions on my luger.

Im happy with it as I have wanted one for a very long time, I have not had chance to fire it yet but hopefully I will get time to head out to the woods next weekend, hopefully the gun actually works. I managed to order a new magazine for it from numrich gun parts.

I think eventually I would like to get another luger in 9mm to keep this one company in my safe.
