New Guy thinking about buying a Luger

Hello,

Are there people on this site that can assist me in appraising and determing real vs fake lugers?

I can take some pictures if there are

gmlehmann 04-10-2013 11:11 PM

Welcome Mike,

I am very new here as well (about 10 days) and have found the people here to be very helpful and informative; I’m certain you would find the info your looking for.

Pictures are very important in order to make proper evaluations, just make sure to take pictures from various angles, such as sides, top, etc. and include any dates and insignias; the clearer the pictures the better.

Glenn

Luger 1939 S/42 9mm

Would prefer better close ups. But from what I see they look original. You will get different opinions, but I would prefer the byf42. Would also need to know if the magazines are matching? Or at least correct for the byf42? Full serial number with suffix on the front of frame

What are the asking prices?

original vs restored ;). From the small photos its kind of hard to tell.

What are you looking for in a Luger?

realrider88 04-11-2013 12:47 AM

Those are two different guns, I am looking to find out what each of them is worth.

DavidJayUden 04-11-2013 12:54 AM

Do all the numbers on each gun match? Do the magazine numbers match the gun? Assuming that the finish is original and there are no big goobers I'm not seeing, maybe a ball park figure of $1500 to $2000 range for either. The BYF is probably a bit more valuable than the S/42.
But there are a lot of variables in play here.
Hope this helps.

Too broad based, you are showing us a few pictures and that's it... To get info, you have to give more.

Check out the various retail places to get values and compare values.

realrider88 04-11-2013 01:40 AM

What other pictures/Information do you guys need to make a reasonable estimate on value?

alanint 04-11-2013 05:57 AM

Welcome,

We need really good closeups of all markings on the guns, including all serials, acceptance stamps, etc. Also, have you disassembled to verify that all interior numbers match the balance of the pistol?
It would be good to use another type of photo software. Yours looks like some sort of thuimbnail/slide simulator that does not allow you to resize.

lugersrkewl 04-11-2013 10:35 AM

that s42 looks brand new

SteveM 04-11-2013 11:14 AM

If both of those you have pictured are original finish, if it were me, I would probably take the 1939 S/42. There are fewer of those around than the BYF 42. That is unless the BYF's 2 mags are matching. It all comes down to details, details,details...

padredan 04-11-2013 11:20 AM

roger that, both look nice in the pictures, it may just come down to price and which you prefer.

realrider88 04-11-2013 11:55 AM

Okay well assuming that those are the best pictures i cant get, the numbers match, and the mags match. What would each be worth?

DavidJayUden 04-11-2013 12:20 PM

Do the mag. numbers match the guns? That is a biggie...

alanint 04-11-2013 12:21 PM

Assuming original finish, I would put both pistols on the high end of previous estimates, in the $2,000 range.

They both appear to be in exceptional condition.

I would also choose the S/42 over the BYF.

What would the price be if they did and if they did not?

So each off those to a collector are worth about $2000 each?

alanint 04-11-2013 07:25 PM

Drop maybe $200-$300 with non matching mags, depending on how important it is to the buyer.

DavidJayUden 04-11-2013 09:29 PM

Let's ballpark them at $1750 for each gun with a period correct but non-matching magazine. $1600 if you want to sell them fast, maybe $1800 if you are willing to get the word out far and wide and wait a bit.
But there is no hard and fast number on Luger prices. They are worth exactly what someone is willing to pay, no more and no less.
This forum is a great place to sell if that is in the cards.

realrider88 04-11-2013 11:46 PM

okay one last question, what is the price that you can sell them fast at like bottom line value? $1600 for each one without matching mags?

realrider88 04-11-2013 11:47 PM

If i get them i would put them for sale on this forum, each would sell for $1600 on THIS forum?

Edward Tinker 04-12-2013 12:26 AM

no, that is too high for quick sale

$1400 quick and then likely slower than as price goes up

If you can get them and pass them along at a decent price and make a profit, then well done :)

realrider88 04-12-2013 06:16 AM

just to clarify 1400 for EACH one on a quick sale to someone else?

alanint 04-12-2013 07:26 AM

Yes, that is what was meant.

I'm getting an odd feeling here and this is nothing personal, but if you are buying these pistols from some war widow, please pay her a fair price for them.

DavidJayUden 04-12-2013 09:01 AM

$1400 seems reasonable, but again, we have still never seen the details, close-ups, numbers on the pins, grips, etc.
Buying anything, especially an unknown, for a "guaranteed" fast buck can be a risky undertaking.

Can anyone give near exact value amounts that they are worth now with the better pictures? please

Edward Tinker 04-12-2013 10:37 PM

Did u check internal sn's? Firing pin and hold open and toggle pin match.

Don't assume, one matches, because if it doesn't you're screwed.

All matching, go higher than what I said...

realrider88 04-12-2013 10:57 PM

No i didnt check for internal mataching serial numbers, What is each worth WITH and WITHOUT matching internal?
