Anyone getting a STG-44 (22 LR) carbine?
1 Attachment(s)
Was at my local haunt last night looking at some pistols and saw one of these just came in - on the rack for $550. "American Tactical Imports GSG Schmeisser STG-44 Carbine with Wood Stock" - Came home and found the same price online. As cool as this is, I just don't know if I can go $550 on a 22. Definitely wouldn't have any authentic feel in 22, but who wouldn't like having that sitting on your gun rack?
I don't know how many they will produce of this, might be worth getting just to have. I thought maybe there had been a replica produced in low numbers in the past, but I'm not positive. |
I have seen the ads for this rifle, but have not laid my hands on one as yet. At $550, that is stepping up price wise, but it does look interesting, to say the least. I feel sure that it would be an attention getter at the range.

Yeah, I did an impulse buy. Very heavy for a 22lr.

Caliber....
Ive seen the ads for this as well......and just wish they had at least gone to .22 Magnum........a little more kick to it.......
|
I was at the South Carolina Arms Collectors show in Greenville this past weekend and the friend I was visiting acquired one for himself. I left for home before he had a chance to try it out. But it felt nice to hold. It is heavy.
One thing I would like to see is a small magazine as the one that comes with the rifle can be difficult if one uses a bench or a prone position to shoot it. |
looks nice, waiting to see how well they work, i like hearing they have some heft to them.
|
The rifle is easy to store. It comes in a wood crate - with the stock removed. Two pieces - but very easy to put together as only "one" pin is needed.
|
A close source tells me its going to be made in a true .30 cal rifle round in the near future.
|
There are several companies making them, including a German company. The problem currently is the price, in the $5K area.
|
Very nice. Saw a Thompson in 22LR this week at a shop and Citadel has the M1 Carbine out in 22LR (has been some problems with this one). So I second the motion for a MP40 and maybe a few others.
|
Rumor has it they are going to come out with a .308 version......will see.
|
Yes, forgot the mention the heft - It does feel like you're holding a battle rifle, not a 22.
If they do make a .30 cal version, I would expect you'd multiply the 22 price more than a couple times. That's what I thought ALANINT - I swore I had seen some 7.92x33 style reproduction above $4k at one point. These are made in Germany by GSG for ATI as I understand, might be one in the same - ATI might be testing the waters? I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a used one at some point - not at all crazy about a 22, but it would be a lot of cheap shooting. I also didn't see that it came with a cool wooden crate, if I could confirm this is an LE, I would go snap one up. |
If anyone is looking for this rifle - they run a couple bucks cheaper online at Buds - $510 cash price - not bad.

PTR was selling a 7.62x39 version of this in 2009... IIRC it was close to 5K. OUCH! |

very cool, I would like to have it in 9mm / kind of a stronger cartridge but not a full WW2 battle rifle

I always though that the STG-44 was a unique gun for its time. I bet It would definitly be a coversation piece around the house. And a .30 cal bullet in it. Now thats awesome.

It looks promising! One of my L.E. friends once took a picture of me posing with the real deal but I never got to fire it. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but to sell it in anything but .22 in the U.S. they'd have to manufacture it here, right? |
I just saw one of these at a local dealer yesterday, complete in its wooden packing crate! I really think this is the second golden age of firearms, as you can pretty much find anything that was ever made being remanufactured again.
|
But not always at a reasonable price. I lost $1,500 to a crook out in WA. state, who was recreating an exact replica of the FJ 42, (first model) in it's original 8mm. configuration. The estimated cost when from an original $4,000 to $10,000, until a number of original depositors banned together and called a halt to the hikes, at which time this crook closed his doors and walked with all the initial investor's money. He got to keep the 2-3 completed prototypes he created and we lost our seed money.
Most of the rare German WW2 guns, (MP44, MkB 42H, FJ 42 first and second mode) are being manufactured in semi and in original calibers or 7.62x39 in Germany at reasonable prices. Our own idiotic gun laws are the only thing preventing us from owning any of these. |

I am doing the same thing for the ATI/GSG 1911-22 with the short (3.2in) barrel. They were supposed to be available in early August, but .......... So I wait. |
That's a pretty cool semi-aito you bought. Certainly an attention getter. Looking forward to your range report. Enjoyed your post and photos.

Is it full-size? Same size as the originals?
|
Hey Richie, nice toy. The alloy is "Zamak..sp" a zinc alloy. That is what my GSG 5 is made of. I added a real mp 5 solid stock and real pins and enjoy shooting it. Mags do warrant some watching.

Here is a comparison of a real STG-44 and the .22 version

and an overlay. The .22 is in white. Looks like the magazine angle is slightly different and the receiver is more thin.
|
No, it belongs to wiki.
I was just curious how accurate the replica is. It looks pretty close. Much better looking than, say, a .22 Luger or that MG42 dress-up kit for the Ruger 10/22. |
Neat! Looks like a pretty accurate reproduction. It will certainly garner some attention at the range I imagine. :)
|
Rich, my '42 Long Branch has a Zamak butt plate. All others that I have had brass. Tell us more about your #5 conversions.
|
Nice work. Does that sight mount into the ejector screw hole?
|
There is a nice write up on this weapon in the Jan 2013 issue of Guns Magazine. The author liked it very much, and was impressed with the fit/finish/accuracy of the rifle.

Have you seen this full auto vid?

Remember that only very late war STg44s had these different tones on various parts of the gun. This is because Stg44s were assembled from parts produced by various manufacturers and some were authorized to use what is essentially a clear parkerizing process as a cost cutting measure. You might consider stripping the finish off these parts, if they are metal and finish them with a matt or opaque clear finish.
Also, Brownells has a number of "Gun Kote" spray finish products, which mimick parquerization. These are oven cured finishes and very durable. You might find what you are looking for there. |
