Refinished Navy

10 Attachment(s)
Ok, so last month I posted some pictures of my 1908 Navy Luger. After thinking about it, I decided to send it out for restoration. It had been re-blued sometime in it’s past, the grips were oil soaked and wouldn’t clean up, and all the parts that should have been straw color were blued along with the rest of it. Since it wasn’t a, “Never messed with, Real Collector” item anymore, I figured I would just keep it and have it refinished.

I contacted Ted Green (Thor) about doing the job and he said he could fit it into his schedule. 30 days later I now have it back. You have got to see this man’s work. Unfortunately the pictures just don’t do his work justice. All the rust, pits and scratches were removed, both inside and out. The rust blue is a very dark uniform black matt finish, as the original was, with fire blue highlights on the axel pins and bar spring. Take down, trigger, mag release, safety and ejector are golden straw. Inside rails and ears are in the white. I’m sure this Navy didn’t look any better the day it came from the factory. All serial numbers and proofs are legible and there is no rounding on any surface. Ted’s work is in a class of its own and I highly recommend him to anyone thinking of restoration work. Thank you again, Ted.

The Navy mag wood bottom was made and installed by GT (Gerald Tomek). It’s done with French Walnut and has the most wonderful looking grain running through it I have ever seen. Gerald has worked on several mags for me and his work is above first class.

The Navy board stock, holster, rig and Navy rod, comes from CMR over in England. Very nice reproductions; Expensive, but far less than the real thing. The board is Walnut, has very nice looking grain and finish. (Brass disk with crown over M on it and a C/M in the wood itself) Blued metal attachment with a straw lock lever. The rod is brass with a wood handle, hard to tell it from the real thing, except its new.

All up, I think I’m into this for about $2700.00. That includes giving the last owner another $300 for the Navy itself. For me, priceless. Norm, update your database to “refinished.”

checkfeo,
this one sure makes the case for restoration !!!

are these the oil soaked grips that came on it ?

looks like the original slide to frame fit was preserved - a nice touch and seems very little metal was consumed in the restoration

awesome blossum !!! enjoy

Thanks for posting the pictures Tom, I love that magazine. Some of the splotchy looking spots could have been the RIG I put on it when I shipped it, I remember the gun looked perfect when I shipped it.

finish

Ted, your right, the finish is 100%. For some reason the pictures of the receiver show a splotchy area, Either its the light or the oil, but in real life you don't see that at all. Guess I should have wiped it down good before the pictures.

Thor 04-13-2012 09:52 AM

Thomas, just curios, how long did it take to unwrap? Did you find the old grips I sent back with it? Thanks for posting this. I appreciate it a lot!

Douglas Jr. 04-13-2012 03:38 PM

Another example of Thor' s gift regarding restoring a gun.
Outstanding work, and it sure can be displayed for the amusement of anyone.
A question about the CMR stock: did you attached to your gun? how difficult was to fit the attaching iron to your pistol?

G.T. 04-13-2012 09:39 PM

Outstanding!!

This is mainly for Thor.. I don't get out of my cave much, and when I do, I try to say as little as possible... But, That thing is just freaking beautiful! ........My mag bottom addition is quite little compared to the scope of work that was necessay to achieve the result pictured... Outstanding Thor... a whole new level in my mind...... best to all, til...lat'r...GT

Makes me wish I had a Parabellum in very sad condition just so I could had Ted refinish it.
Outstanding worksmanship again.

The board stock went right on and locked. (no fitting required) ON THIS NAVY. I did try it on a 1916 military, It went on but would not lock. Go figure!

Some pictures didn't show the nice finish that Thor did, so after wiping off the oil I'm reposting a few. Mainly I wanted to show the uniform finish on the receiver.

Norme 04-16-2012 10:18 AM

Hi Tom, You're right to be proud of your Navy, Ted did an amazing job of the restoration. For those not "in the know", keeping the receiver rails and the small retaining pin in the left toggle knob "in the white", are things that separate the men from the boys. Bravo Ted! Best regards, Norm

Kitkat041836 04-16-2012 12:03 PM

Hi Tom
How much did Ted charge you to have your Navy restored?
Thanks George

cirelaw 04-16-2012 12:16 PM

I beleive that is between them both.

Thor 04-16-2012 01:30 PM

Eric, I did do this Test Luger for Jasta2 a couple of years ago.

Hi Eric
I just thought it would be nice to know just in case I wanted
to have one of mine restored.
Thanks George:evilgrin:

Ron Wood 04-16-2012 02:05 PM

George,
If you go to Ted's website he has a price list. Depending on the condition of the gun to start with, these prices could vary, but it gives you a ballpark. Ted does restoration as opposed to refinising, but he also will do a custom finish (his "total doll job") if you want it.

The Navy has always appealed to me, this is great work that showcases the best this configuration has to offer! Absolutely beautiful--thanks for the good, clear pics, too.

Thanks for your feedback.
I'm thinking to purchase a Artillery stock/holster for display purposes. I guess it's like lottery.
Once more, congratulations for your "new" Navy - another proof of Thor's wonderful work.
