Carbine serial numbers

Have a question about serial number ranges for the 1902 Carbine. According to Aaron Davis's books, the first batch was from 21200 thru 22100. But according to Charles Kenyon, the range starts at 21000. Can anybody confirm for sure which is correct? Also, any guess on how many Carbines are known to exist?

Thanks - bob

Quite a number. As someone once said "they are too big to lose and too pretty to throw away." Unfortunately, the stocks have not survived to the same degree.

When in doubt, believe the most expensive book...

Well, I know that about 2500 were made, just curious if anybody had ever added-up the known survivors. I see some models of Luger that are the only survivor out of 100+ made. Just wondering if there are 500 carbines, or 2000, that are known about.

I think it is safe to say that there are more known to exist than were ever made... :D

Hi Bob,
Dwight Gruber's commercial database shows the lowest reported S#21157 and the highest S#24872. There were two separate runs of 1902 carbines, with Cartridge Counters, German Test, Dutch test, and Fat barrel AE's in the middle.
First range: #21157- #22000
Second range: #23460- #24872.
Keep in mind, these are reported survivors.

Thanks, exactly what I needed to know. Is Mr. Gruber's database available online?

Is there a database for the latter, 1920 carbine?

Dwight Gruber lists about 30 in his data base.

Thanks Ron, There are only a few with a 't' suffix and they are all in time but for police models. I"m thinking its a lonely orphan!! Do you know anyone who knows any thing about or collects the commercial lugers?

So what are carbines going for these days? I see that Simpson's is in the $20K range. Ouch! I might think about unloading some war trophy P08's for a decent gun with stock.

There are options for a Carbine

Answer this with a Y or N:
1. You do not have spare 20K laying around
2. You do like to have a carbine but can not find one
3. You want to have one or even have one but afraid to shoot it
4. You can not stop thinking about selling your car and getting a carbine instead
5. You been waiting to get one for a long time and do not mind waiting for another year.

Well if you answered Yes to at leas 3 out of the 5 you may be interested in conversion:

There was a guy walking around shopping one at the Ft. Meyers show this weekend. Would not entertain a penny under $25K for it.....

So true...

I am catching up ... slowly ...

Problem is: more guns need work and there not meany people that do it ...

So as a result people that do, get overwhelmed and delivery times stretch ....

But even 4 years is better then never as far as owning a carbine goes....

Where is a front sight on that Navy Luger in the picture ... ?

cirelaw 02-13-2012 02:54 PM

Thank GOD you spotted it. I found it outside where the pictures were taken!!
