What is your favorite High powered bolt action military rifle? NONE (although I have an Arisaka and won't kick any gun out of the safe except to upgrade my collection)

I did not know that the M1 Garand was an assault rifle.

It depends on if you are looking for the black rifle version of the tale, then it would have to include a detachable magazine.

I think I would be fine against a couple of zombies w/ AR-15s if I have my Garand and my son by my side :)

I just finished a NoDak Spud 9mm 'Uzi' for that very reason [zombies; not your son]... :thumbup:

I had relied on a Colt/DOE 633 in 5.56mm, but those bullets just keep on goin'...9mm pretty much stops in drywall... ;)

(I've had a Chevy station wagon door stop a 9mm..) :p

The M14 could be considered an assault rifle by todays standard. Like ED, I will take my M1 Garand with 30.06 armor piercing against most anything on four wheels rolling down my block.

Nice that they forgot the 'mother of all assault rifles' (and the rifle that gave them their name) the Sturmgewehr 44.

well Charlie, considering that anyone can add to Wikipedia (unless someone has asked that subject be closed), then anyone can write whatever they want.

Assault rifle is a newer term, but I stick with my original comment that it depends on the person's interpretation on what is or is not a assault rifle. And yes, the normal definition is as you said above. That said, it usually includes the definition of a high powered round, and yet NJ says that a M1 carbine is an evil weapon....

I find it interesting that ammunition [7.92 Kurz] for the STG44 was still being manufactured in 1961 (if I'm reading the case correctly)...

7.92 Kurz next to 7.92 x 57...

The Kurz round is steel cased...

I haven't come across any reference to these 'assault rifles' being used by anyone following WW II...Has anyone else???

Remember also, that Saturday night Specials also included 1st generation Colt SSAs.

When we start adopting and using the terminology of the anti gun people we are cutting our own throats.


So when PA decides to ban assault weapons and includes the M1 Garand in the definition, they can, as a part of the rationale, use your, Hugh's and others statements as a part of the basis. After all, even the pro gun people believe and say they are (the evil) assault weapons. :)

The East Germans and Czechs used the MP44 into the 1960s and the Czechs still produced ammunition for the gun until very recently. A friend that is an arms importer tells of crates upon crates of MP44s in Egypt in the late 1990s!

The Garand was a BATTLE rifle and one of the best on the Planet during WW2. It was meant for single aimed accurate shots at a distance.

It was not intended for use as a submachine gun...Like the AK47 can be used ...as well as aimed single shots.

The M2 carbine could be more appropriately called an assault rifle because of it's high capacity magazine and the ability to fire full auto.

Gerben is correct, the Sturmgewehr 44 was an amazing platform but IMO not all that different than the MP18 or MP40. The round was small ..I am not sure it could reach too much further or be that much more effective than a 9MM at close range.

I was a DJ for WSOU South Orange during college at Seton Hall University and got to meet all of the New York radio celebrities. I lost my job after me and my engineer put on Eric Claptons' Layla. We put it on ran down stair to blow a doobie listening to our station to give us time to run back to the mike! Unfortunatle we locked ourselves out. You can't make this up. After I first moved back to Jensen Beach, Florida me college room mate from Seton Hall Art Romano had his father also moved down here. Arts' father was an advid firsherman and had this honey hole near the inlet in Stuart where He had great luck. He had asked Art that when He died He wanted His ashes scattered at sunset at the mouth f the St. Lucie input. Well he succumbed to cancer in 1981. Art flew down wanting to fulfill His Dads wish. My chiro had a 17' mako. We took His ashes and headed out to the inlet. Upon arriving whe lowered the anchor and Art said a prayer as he scattered his Dads ashes unto the slowly peaceful tidal flow. SUDDENLY OUT OF NOWHERE A HUGE PELLIGAN MISTAKENLY ARTS FATHERS' ASHES FOR BAITFISH SWOOPED DOWN GULPING US ARTS OLD MAN. Stunned, I said,Art the stupid pelligan just ate your father! We all nearly pissed ourselves. As the pelligan took of I said to Art that His second wish about scattering His ashes would come true!!This Is A rue Story!
