Great Geico Commercial

Some of you have probably seen this, but I love R.Lee Ermey, a retired Gunnery Sargent and DI.

He reminds me of my old Master Chief.

This is great!!

Another one...

That's a good one. On a more serious note, here's one of my most recent favorites:

Ron

It is a good one.

We need more like him.

I have some basic statements:
(1) That is not my fault.
(2) Why ?
and sometimes
(3) Show me the authority.

I was in my doctor's office last Thursday and they had a new receptionist (young). She had to take 4 time outs before finally giving me to anoother one. Haughty attitudes don't go far with me.

She hands me a form and tells me to fill it out. I ask Why. She said HIPPA requires it and I asked to see the provision which required it.

Then she said that she needed my insurace cards and I said you have them from years ago and also the last ime when I was there in March. She said they had a new computer system and it did not transfer over. My answer was that it was no my fault.

Apparently no one has ever disagreed with her as she was growing up and she could not take it when someone finally did.

Jack,

That's a very good video.

Thanks for posting it.

I'm normally not a big fan of "artistic", but sometimes it's just done right. I don't think the seatbelt commercial would have worked as well with Gunny at the wheel.

Thanks,
Jack

I just saw that one yesterday morning...great commercial!!!

I especially like when he throws the kleenex... :D

But why is he shaven bald???

Short haircuts are in vogue for soldiers nowadays. Kind of harkens back to the prohibition of beards and long hair in hand to hand combat situations...you do not want to give the opponent something to grab on to and secure an advantage. "White sidewalls" have been the mark of a combat soldier for quite some time and the trend has been for ever shorter haircuts as the mark of a "gung-ho" troop. Plus, in the current desert warfare environment, water and shampoo are pretty low down on the totem pole.

Having said that, "Gunny" is now a popular icon and needs to look the part.

I Met Lee Ermey at the recent CMP Eastern Games in Camp Butner, NC.

He shot his M1 Garand well and earned his Leg points!

Very nice man. The kids at the event met a good role model who really took the time to get to know them. Come to think of it, so did the adults!

I met a guy who claimed to have worked for him in the Marines. He said he really wasn't as hard ass as he pretends to be.

I sport a "#1 Military Haircut" myself (have for ~26 years)...but Ermey had a cable TV show called "Mail Call" and he had a regulation Marine haircut (high & tight white sidewalls with an island of hair on top).

I doubt he cut/shaved it just for a Geico commercial...but he may have done so for a movie spot...

Have to Google that and see what he's up to... :)

That's a good one.

R. Lee Ermey was never really a Gunnery Sergeant. He was a Staff Sergeant. In 2002 he was given a honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant.

...by the [then] Commandant no less!!! :D

I never really understood why Kubrick made him a gunny in Full Metal Jacket...when I was in, the highest DI rank was Staff Sgt...your series had a Series Gunnery Sgt, but he was all admin, not hands-on training...We only saw the Series Gunny when he was whipping through the barracks ["the barn"] with some paperwork problem...and the only time we saw an officer (before Final Inspection) was when we got our UCMJ lecture...

Neil Young 07-01-2010 08:50 AM

My senior DI was a Gunny, and he was definitely a hands-on DI, and I mean that literally. Of course, I was in boot camp in 1956, so things may not have been the same in more recent years.

I joined the Navy in Feb.'69. My nephew joined in the early '90s. When he came home on Boot leave, he told me that in was like a strict version of Scout Camp.

When he told me that the CC's(Navy DI) weren't allowed to touch anyone I couldn't believe it. One of my "fondest" memories was when an MED Inspector jumped feet first on my back while I was doing 10 count push-ups.

I hate commercials which end with a 5000 word disclamer in words that resemble braille!Heres a 5 word disclaimer, "EVERYTHING WE SAID IS B*** S***!

Aside from hygiene, short hair helps treating head wounds which are fairly common and quite messy.
Also part of the persona they have created around this character.
He fits the picture that denizens of namby-pamby land can imagine as the real deal.

I believe in reality, he was a REMF supply guy.
We all had our jobs and it was being there that counts.

I'm glad for him he has been able to turn this into a succesful career.
The old Sgt from "China Beach" used to come around to vet events and tip a few, but he never made it real big.
Nice guy, though.
I love it when Ermy throws the issues at the "crybaby."
I'm not considered a very sympathetic person in issues of intestinal fortitude.

Ron Smith 08-06-2010 02:19 PM

Mike,

If I recall, the guy who I met that worked for him said he was a helicopter mechanic.

Ron
