Last time a Luger was used in a crime?
 

The only event that comes to mind is Superman, i.e. George Reeves was either shot with or took his own life with a Luger. That was in 1959.

I am sure it has happened many times, but it is not the likely choice of an average criminal.... why would it be?

It is not as easy to find as say a glock or ruger or colt or ... In other words, unless stolen or used by someone who associates the luger with bad things, I can't imagine why it would be chosen?


Just a guess or feeling, but perhaps if your wife feels this way, I would guess she feels lugers are associated badly. To many folks, they associate lugers with nazi's. And lugers started in the early 1900's, many, many years before them.

There are a lot of 30's movies where Lugers were bad guys guns.

They had the look and the connotation rolled into one.

A number of cop reality type shows over the years involved lugers.

One guy killed his family and was caught years later.
Another wher a bad guy in Missori was killed in public, only no witnesses,
I believe a Luger was used and tossed into wet concrete in a city park structure, later dug up.
A number of others over the years.
More, probably, just not specified.

The crime Lugers are most frequently involved in is fraud. Carried stuck in your belt like the modern desperados prefer, they are a good way to get shot in the crotch.

One of the Puerto Rican's that tried to assassinate Harry Truman at Blair House in 1950 was armed with a Luger. It jammed, and he was killed by a Capitol Police Officer.

If I recall correctly, John List the guy who murdered his entire family and managed to hide his identity for 25(?)years. Used 1912 Steyr-Hahn Pistol.

It's also reported that Ty Cobb carried a Luger everywhere he went, up until his death in '61. Even brought it to the hospital where he died. He had it in a paper bag with over a million dollars in cash. In the movie with Tommy Lee Jones, he had an Artillery Luger.

Not a Luger, but my all time favorite is the Dilbert that stole a shotgun from his dad. Sawed the barrels off, robbed a corner Mini-Mart for something like $47. Got caught about 3 hours later, and still his dad's chopped off $3500.00 shotgun in the car.:rolleyes:

That was like a story here in New England a few years back. Some younger family members took the grandparents, or other relitaves coin collection and bought junk food with it. I take that has happened many times.

Don't know if anyone else noticed, but on one of the TV shows of "Everyone hates Chris", the local bad guy held up Chris with the frame of a luger inside his belt --- no top, just the frame. TH

There was a case in NJ I belieive in the 50s where a man walked down the street with a luger shooting and reloading with spare mags killed I think 7 or 8

In 2003, a German gang aptly called the 'Opa Bande' (Grampa Gang) committed a few bankrobberies using WW2 equipment, including a P08 and a Sten-gun.

The trio, then 63, 73 and 74, was caugh and tried.

The one I remember is the young Canadian who used a single action 45 he had inherited from his grandfather to hold up a gas station. He was caught his weapon was traced to being issued to one of Benteins(sp) men at the Little Big Horn. It was apparently carried north by one of the winners. It was auctioned off by the Mounties for a lot of money.

There was a well known 80+ yr old retired Forest Service Supervisor and Hunting Guide from Blue River,OR. about 35 miles east of here. His grandfather was a railroad guard for Wells Fargo.

He had his grandad's S&W revolver and Greener 10ga Coach gun that were marked Property of Wells Fargo, and had agreed to sell them at a pre-set price to a local dealer upon his death.

A couple of neighboring scumbag brothers burgled his home, and stole the S&W and Greener among other things. They came into the same dealer's shop a week or so later wanting to sell them.

An off duty County Deputy who was a friend of the dealer's happened to be in the shop at the time. The guns were recovered, along with several other items that they had in their car. There's no cure for stupid.

Here, i believe it was in the 70s-90s, in the gangland war era of the time, a suspect, somebody who knew to much about a certain drug smuggler, was killed by a luger pistol.

I was an alternate on a jury in Hackensack, NJ back in the mid 90's. I did not have to cast a verdict during this trial.
A beauty salon in New Milford, NJ had been broken into over night and about $1300 was stolen. Four young adults were caught as they tried to exit the building.
A few hours later an observant patrol officer noticed a car with NY plates and the driver side window open was parked on a residential street a block away. He looked in the open window and saw the round end of a Luger magazine and part of a grip that was exposed from where it was stuffed into a seat. He wisely called for detectives who photographed the scene before doing a further search.
The Luger was a 1917 Erfurt and according to the prosecution had been appraised at $1400.00. There were rounds in the magazine but not one chambered. A box of 9mm ammo was found under a seat with the same # of rounds missing.
The car was registered to one of the boys fathers from Warwick, NY. The son who was arrested lived with his parents. The father claimed ownership of the pistol.
The jury found the young man guilty of the B&E but NOT guilty of "possession of a loaded firearm" because the car window was open and "Someone could have put it there".
As far as I know the father did not get his Luger back from the Bergen County DA.:order:

How about a Luger imn a comic book?

There was an old guy back in the 90s who killed his wife with a Luger brought back from WWII. She had Alzheimers and its was a "mercy" killing. He went to jail for it . Think it was in Florida.

This Luger is still legal in Great Britain
