Which Luger to carry?

Suppose that you were limited to carrying a Luger. Which configuration would you choose for its mechanical and ergonomic merits, regardless of scarcity and cost?

Vlim 07-15-2008 06:56 AM

The 1906 9mm with grip safety.

'For that extra safety' :)

I would love 1900. Cute bolt lock + pencil barrel. Mechanically, I don't know. It should work. Swiss army tested it.

LugerVern 07-15-2008 09:15 AM

I would have to go with the so called 1905/06 special production "Baby Luger" with grip safety. 7 shot, 3 1/4 barrel. 9mm. Like the one they say George Luger made for himself and so often pictured in books. "size, weight and safety"

It doesn't matter what you think of the originally of the gun, the concept is a good one and if it was available on special order that is the one I would carry.

I voted for the Artillery, which is what works best for me of all my Lugers. I am about to pick up this 1906 9mm AE though, so my choice might change next week.

Weren't all original G.L. "babies" chambered in .32 and .380 ACP?

There are two versions of Luger "babies". You are correct with respect to the 4 (possibly 5?) scaled-down Lugers that were originally made in their small configuration. There were also a few 7-shot Lugers, including Georg's personal one, that were made by shortening the grip frame and barrel of a standard Luger.

I'd have to go with the .45 cal. US Test Luger if it's limited to originals. If not, I'd have a baby 45 made.

I always thought it would be a good carry gun, a 1906 with a grip safety, because you could carry it with the safety catch off, knowing that it would be "safe" until your hand contacted the grip safety.

I would carry a Finnish Luger w/120mm [4 3/4"] Tikkakoski barrel; squared Finnish front sight; in 7.65 Parabellum...Stock lug a must... :D

I would go with my 70's Mauser below in a nice holster. It never jammed for me, has been 100% reliable, has a grip safety and all the improvements.
If concealed I would opt for the 4" bbl.

guns3545 11-15-2010 10:19 AM

Not sure that I would carry but...

if I were to, about the only "Luger" in the safe that would easily be carried is this, courtesy of the master, JM about 12 years ago.

Excuse the poor photography.

One who's caliber starts with a .4

None. In my opinion, none of them are suitable for modern carry even if you were allowed to carry openly. Old Blue

wlyon 11-15-2010 11:15 PM

As much as I love lugers I can not imagine carrying one for personal protection. To big to heavy and for me the wrong caliber. For carry give me my compact 45. Bill

Carry Luger

I would use the one that never fails and has a good trigger pull. Not to light for accidently going off from being in a nervous situation and BANG!!!!!! and hope you meant to do it!

Frank 11-16-2010 09:50 AM

I'm with Wild Bill. Give me a .45 for my carry!!! :)

ptrickamp222 11-16-2010 10:22 PM

Carry Pistol

I own 3 Custom 45's and there is no other for stopping power. One shot and there down. the second shot can be used in court for premeditated. My Novak Browning is good for plates and targets but 9mm is not a one shot affair. And I know all the magnum people will chime in but the magmum's are to loud for me. There's something about a good ole 45 for security or a sawed off for a house cleaner.......

Stevie 01-05-2011 10:24 PM

I voted other..and think the WWII era Mauser P08 with extruded mags and good ammo..would do about as well as any other 8 shot full-size 9mm pistol.

I suppose a Krause-werkes .45 or if you happened to have the #1 or #3 .45 test Luger..you could stick that in your pants and be about as well armed as anybody could hope for with a handgun...or at least..maybe use the pistol to barter your way out of trouble

"Now if you don't hurt me..I'll give you this big Luger worth $500,000..otherwise going to have to try shoot this expensive thing"

stocklaw123 01-06-2011 12:34 AM

i still would first pull out my sig 45 equinox for one shot stopping power.

I prefer my G-29 Glock, the little bitty 10mm.
But if I had to go Luger, it would be one of my Krieghoffs, just for reliability and the Cool Factor.

fred p 01-06-2011 09:41 AM

If it had to be a luger it would be a 1939 42 as thats the only one I own  so far as others my choice would be a wheel gun in .357 or larger for reliability and stopping power. If I was a realy big guy [I am not] it would be my raging bull in .454 casull. If the bad guys would line up just right I could prolly get 3 at a time to save ammo!

My job places me in harms way and althought there is a substantial military presents my employer allows PDW's if the employee have demonstrated knowledge and skill in the uses of his/her PDW. The last time I was "over there" I had a Colt .45 Government Model but I have been think this next time I just might take a Pistole 08. Now you going to think "now that is one foolish choice.". But let me explain. One reason is the coolness factor. The biggest reason is what I heard when I was much younger. When I was a kid I did yard work for a older German gentleman. I came into possesion a a German P08 manual and thought I would take it to him for a translation. It did not cross my mind that he might have been in the war on the losing side. When I handed him the manual you could see memories flood back. He asked if I had a P08 and I said no but would like to get one. He said they are very good pistols. From what little he told me I pieced together that he was in the army the last 3 years of the war (1943-1945). That he was a machinegunner (MG42). And that even though he had complete confidence in his machinegun he was alway glad his P08 was at his side. And he made sure to say it was a P08 and not a P38. He said it never failed him when he needed it. I didn't ask you he was shooting at. So, if it was good enough for Herr Hofmeister, I think it will work for me.

cocked and locked 1911 in 45acp.

Freischütz 04-19-2011 10:48 PM

The one that functions most reliably.

wlyon 04-20-2011 01:01 AM

My compact 45!!!! Bill

cirelaw 04-23-2011 04:30 PM

With you eyes closed could you tell comprable lugers apart. Is there much difference between the newer and older variety? If so in what way? PS Am I the only virgin?

Conny 04-24-2011 10:22 AM

A Baby in .45 (if I could ever afford one).

djr46 05-02-2011 08:04 PM

Carry?

It would be a mistake to carry a Luger IMHO when there are much more usable/efficient carry weapons available (IF and WHEN needed).

Try a mod 23 Glock in .40S&W or a sub Colt type in .45 auto.

I carry the Glock 23 w/a KKM SS barrel. FINE carry gun capable of stopping anything.

Lugers are beautiful. JUST that they weren't designed for "carry duty".

Conny 05-02-2011 10:11 PM

Of course there are better handguns to carry today. No one is disputing that fact. It was a general question to relieve boredom or to notice who chooses which Luger to carry or to get a general concensus about which Luger would be best.

The question was, "Which Luger to Carry?"

cirelaw 05-02-2011 10:57 PM

The one that you own!

Not a proper definite description for most owners.
