Any other current Luger manufacturers besides AIMCO/Orimar?
 

Hi guys I have a quick question.

I'm pretty new here, and most information I see around here goes over my head...

My question is, are there any current manufacturers of Lugers?

I am not a big gun guy (yet), and the Luger style is very intriging to me. I want my first gun purchase to be a Luger. I don't want to get a used gun, so I'm trying to find info on new guns only.

Also, I live in CA... any advice there?

There are no current manufacturers of lugers except the "one" you said. I would buy a new in box Mauser from the 1970's if I was you.

What sort of price range would I be looking at for a Mauser? And where would you suggest as places to look?

The stainless lugers are allegedly available on an as ordered basis and in the same price range as the Mauser re-intros.

There are a very few who make Lugers on a custom basis, but there are a few of observations to be made about them.

1. They are priced way beyond the beginner's range.

2. They are priced way beyond the range of most collectors.

3. They are priced way beyond the shooting category.

4. If you have to ask the price you can't afford one.

5. Aside from the first 4 points they would be the thing to have.

mccracken, there are no current manufacturers of Lugers, only Luger "style" pistols and replicas of Lugers. The Mauser Lugers of 1970s manufacture are the last of the authentic Lugers.

I know they were supposed to be extremely expensive, but it would be a new production luger.

If you go to thier website they still show it with the word NEW next to it.(wait for the pictures to cycle through) In addition they have "The Krieghoff Parabellum comes back" over to the right.

California is a different story, You will probably have to buy a used one. You couldn't bring a stainless one into the state unless it is already regestered there , and I doubt that Krieghoff will send the state of California alot of money plus a gun to destroy in testing so they can sell them there.

Thank you guys for the info so far, I'm looking into the Mauser models.

Hopefully I can find a good one for a decent price, and not have to deal with the State of California.

Anyone have any input on CA restrictions? Sorry I'm such a complete beginner with this stuff.

Hmm based on what I see at Collector's Firearms, I don't think I can afford the prices I saw ($1400 - $3500). Is this a typical sample? Can they be found under $1000? I don't want to buy used, but I guess I would have to if this is how expensive they are.

As I understand, the stainless lugers are $695 new. I was hoping the Mausers would be comparable.

Just to make it clear, I was hoping to be able to shoot the gun, not just keep it as a collector's item. I wouldn't be shooting it excessively, just every now and again.


Shadow: I see your note about buying used. I know a gun show is a place to do this, and one just past through town last weekend. Any other ways you guys suggest to get one used/previously owned?

Even used older units have exploded in price. The best deal on a shooter will be a properly assembled parts gun. A few good deals on those pop up now and again. Some of them look extremely nice, and they can be shot without too much worry of destroying a collectors piece...

If you are looking for a used luger you probably want to stay right here. Most of the Lugers in the gun boards seem inflated in price. In the spring I bought a shooter from someone on this website for under $700.

Put a request in the want to buy section of this website and see what happens. You probably want to keep your eye on the Lugers for sale section also.

I would think Mike Krause of San Mateo, CA would beg to differ...he makes a nice .45 luger for $ 15K or maybe more...also a darn nice Baby luger. Krause even has a manufacturer's license.

And then there is John Martz of Lincoln, CA with his custom made lugers.

Krause makes them up from scratch. Martz makes them out of 1-2 old lugers.

But both not in the under $ 1000 price range...sorry.

That is a very nice looking gun, and very tempting, but I guess I can't afford it.

Looking at the prices I've seen so far, I think I'll just hold off for about a year. I should be able to spend that much in about a year :)

I bought my first 1970's swiss Mauser with a 6" 9 mm barrel NIB with all factory stuff about 3 years ago for $ 825.

Do you think $995 is a good price for that gun? I intend on firing it, but not a ton. How much does firing a gun like this depreciate it?

I think a gun depreciates more from not cleaning them properly after shooting
and improper storage. A gun that's well taken care of like the one for $995 will hold or increase in value. It doesn't state that the gun is new or unfired, just that it's in exellent condition.

IMHO, if I can buy an old, beat up and ugly Luger for less money, that's what I'll shoot. If I buy a gun that's in better than 95% condition, I'm not going to shoot it much, if at all.

If a shooter is what you want you can buy a real Luger for far less dough and not feel bad about scratching it or wearing it out. Those 1970s Mausers are almost too pretty to shoot. :)

I really like the Mauser with the 4" barrel for $995

Do you know if collectorsfirearms.com negotiates on price? If so, what should I offer? I was thinking along the lines of $800 and see if they would take it or meet me somewhere in between.

I have heard they don't negotiate much... but have not dealt with them myself, but if you don't ask., you'll never know ;>)

I would research see how long an item has been on the shelf and use that as leverage.

Guns America has this decent 6" 9 mm swiss for sale for a bit under $ 1000. Looks like the wooded grips were sanded down a bit to get rid of the course factory checkering job.

So I've talked with a California FFL, and he found the Mauser Parabellum listed with the ATF Curio and Relic category, so I can legally bring it into California :)

Actually here is the entry with the ATF, can anyone tell me if the Luger mentioned in my post above satisfies this criteria with the Swiss pattern??

The "swiss" the BATF C&R list refers to is the 1970's luger with the front edge of the grip stap. Same shape as the M1929 Swiss Bern luger...
