A shooter Luger, is just that, a shooter. Mismatched, East German or Russian reworks(these are beginning to rise above "shooter" catagory), a pitted or "Bubba" re-blued example, or one that you assembled yourself from parts.


This is a 1914 Erfurt that I got from a crooked dealer on Auction Arms. He had photos of a very nice Luger. Obviously not this one. The description was a " Professionally re- finished 1914 Erfurt , all matching."

I contacted him for more photos and he offered to sell it off auction for $700, on the grounds that he had to sell it as soon as possible for the first reasonable offer. This is what I got. He refused to take it back and refund my money. Since I bought it off auction, I couldn't get any support from the auction admin. So, I reported him as a crook and took my lumps. I haven't seem him post anything since under the name that he was using.

I have it completely stripped and in process of re-finishing it.

My shooter is this artillery; I paid $350 for it in Honolulu, Hawaii in about 1985, it was my first Luger, and I knew it was buffed bad and reblued when I bought it (I owned Datig since I was in High School), and she shoots very nice. Really likes those solid core through an engine block 9mm :cool:

Top one is the artillery, bottom one is my "double date' weimar police shooter that has not gone shooting yet;

My shooter .30. Assembled from parts that I bought on-line, parts that I bought from members, and parts that were kindly donated by members.

The upper half I bought from Tom Heller, and sent off to Ted Green. The bead blasted and re-blued unit marked early Imperial frame, I won on auction. The small parts were either donated or I bought them from forum members. All together, it cost me just under $600 for a nice shooter.

A 1937 S/42 with a turned and shortened artillery barrel and an original Navy rear sight. I bought it from forum member Richie Shavel about 2 or 3 years ago for $1500. A lot of money for a shooter, but if you consider that an original Navy in this condition would cost $4000+, it's not really all that bad, and I can shoot it.

The Luger which I shoot primarily is a 1936 S/42. Its all-mataching, but the finish is pretty poor. I paid $700 for it back when that amount was really too much. Sorry about the picture quality, its what I've taken of it.

This is a Luger I shoot sometimes. It is a 5" barrel parts gun (swapped parts around of two different guns), salt blued by Thor back when he was doing that, the grips are honest-to-pete smooth ivory. It probably has $1,100 into it right now, subtracting the price of the remainder parts gun I sold. It put me off of "project guns" forever. Ivory grips are an extreme pleasure to shoot with.

I also shoot this 1900 AE sometimes. It is reblued and hard used, the Eagle is buffed almost completely away, the barrel is shot smooth. When I shoot it it is often with the Ideal stock rig. I paid $600 for it when that was way too much--but it was my first Luger! The Ideal stock and grips I got by very advantageous trading.

I used to have a 1917 LP-08 which I shot, it was actually a low-end collection quality gun but I shot it anyway. I'm not including a picture because its not mine anymore. Cost me $1,200.

Around 2001 I was looking for a good shooter and found a Russian capture 1937 S-42 in excellent mechanical condition. It was all "matching," but a couple of the numbers had been forced. The barrel had a gross import marking on the bottom.

I sent the gun to Hugh Clark who fitted it with a new 6" barrel and made the beautiful grips you see in the pictures. Then, Hugh forwarded it to Ted Green (Thor) who refinished it. GT took a Mec-Gar magazine and fitted it with a new wood bottom to match the rest of the gun.

In the pictures the barrel appears to have flat sides, but this is just an artifact of the scanning process. I didn't have a digital camera in those days, so I scanned it on a flatbed scanner.

I fired this Luger about 20 times and put it away. Just don't shoot Lugers much any more; I prefer to shoot 22 rifles these days. :rolleyes:

Mismatched 1917 Artillery. The top is all one number and the bottom is all one number but they just don't match each other. Finish isn't too bad at about 85% but the straw isn't great. I picked it up here last month, a Christmas present to myself. I paid $850 for it but had to drive three hundred miles round trip to get it.

Here's another one I got here a couple of months ago, this one from Hugh. It's a 1917 Erfurt that he assembled from parts he had laying around. It's got a shiney reblue and is well buffed. It shoots great.

This is a scrubbed Bulgarian I got from the father of an online acquantance. Funny how you meet some people... :) I traded for it with a mediocre MAB C I paid $150 for. I gave him the gun + $200 making it a $350 investment. The cool thing about it is that it still has the Cryllic marked extractor in it. I should sell it off and further reduce my cost in it - see how low I can go... :D

This was my second pistol but was the first I ever paid for{$350) and was a pitted wreck. It had a great bore and shot unbelievable so I decided to take the restoration on myself. It came out OK considering its condition when I started and is without a doubt my favorite shooter. :)

Sorry I missed your earlier question...the marking on the left side of the barrel is "Germany"...stamping through the bluing.

When Hugh said he would put together some junk for us poor guys. I expected a lot of rust , pits and something that looked like the cat drug it in. I never expected one that looks this good.
I sent him a barrel I had laying around, only to find out it was an after market navy. He offered to swap with me, but I liked the idea of a Fake Navy. So,I contacted LugerDoc ( also great to deal with) and he sold me a rear sight that Hugh generously agreed to install.
Anybody that didn't get in on one of these-- eat your heart out. Cause I'm keeping my shooter !!!
BTW Hugh and LugerDoc are class acts that deserve the good reputations they have around here.

As for what it's parts are:
The frame doesn't have the Mauser hump,other than that all I can add is serial# 8110i
The receiver is a 1936 #4023 with a S/42 toggle assembly. The barrel and rear sight are after market.

Mine is all 1937 S/42 except the barrel and original rear sight. With numbers force matched Ser# 1004. It is deadly at 100-200 yards with a repro stock. My favorite...

I just got around to taking a photo of my 1920 commercial in .30. This is my all time favorite shooter since I reload .30. Notice the "funky" target front sight ......

This has been a difficult gun to make function well, but it's a fun shooter. Hopefully I will find some better grips for it someday.

It's actually common to see these commercials with the Marbles Sheard bead front sight. I think it was a distributors marketing ploy. I have owned two with this identical sight blade.

Is that a functional suppressor? I wish we could own them without going to the time and expense of the paperwork, licensing and transfer fees.

My recent purchase. Refinished Russian capture mismatched BFY41.
Since I found this forum after I bought it I see now I probably paid a bit too much but I'd never owned a Luger and I wanted a shooter. It shoots well and fits in with the rest of my WWII collection.

Ron, yes, it's a silencer made by a company called Alm. It works quite well, but wish it was a bit lighter.
There is no registration or fee to purchase silencers over here, can't see why it should be?
It has become more and more common to mount silencers on regular hunting rifles to prevent hearing injury. Also not to disturb neighbors and gain a softer recoil.
..you never get a 30.06 quiet, but it helps. I use the middle one on this site when hunting deer http://www.hausken.no/?link=produkter.php

They are considered a destructive device in the U.S. Someone might shoot someone with it. In which case, they would be much deader than if you didn't use one. Or some stupid crap like that...

It is just that with antler grips, all I have seen are very thick, so thought I'd comment on my "larger" hands. Never occured to me that Ron S or Rod would think weird thoughts :D okay, that is a lie ;)

Ed, I think you should tke a page from Elmer Keith (I think it was) and use ivory with a steerhead on the right panel as a filler. And the bovine should have a ruby eye.

Thought I should share a picture and brag a little of my favorite shooter.
It has a reproduction barrel and rear sight + ground down rear toggle link. So it's no coconut, but it sure is a joy to shoot with :)

I'm glad my wife wasn't sitting beside me when I was bidding on them.. it was one of those things I just had to get ;)

They actually got me thinking of engraving the whole thing.. some discrete pattern and a fireblue finish. I don't have much fate in my skills with the dremmel, that would be more like abstract art.. so it would have to be done by a 'professional'. Probably outside my price range at the moment

My brother engraving glass bottle, maybe he would (could) do that, but I think it isn't a good idea :D

That's the first time I have seen a double Navy property mark. The grips are beautiful. I really like the oak leaf pattern.
