DATA REQUEST for 42 byf Lugers

Greetings Luger Nuts!!

I would like your assistance collecting data for the 42 byf Military Mauser Luger. The data I am seeking are the serial number and the presence (or absence) of the bore gage stamped on the underside of the barrel.

As always, I will collect the data, not the personal information that goes with it. If you are reluctant to publish the data, please send me an email with the information at:

mrbguy@msn.com

for the uninitiated, please make sure you are providing data for a 42 byf! The top of the Luger should look like the following photo (except for the small part numbers):

PIC 1

The serial number should consist of both a number and a letter suffix, which is found on the front of the frame, as shown below.
PICTURE 2
http://forum.lugerforum.com/lfupload/byf_frank2.jpg
Note the suffix in this case is a â??câ?, so the serial number would be reported as 6734c.

Many serial numbers are reported as just the numerical value found on the frame front or on the barrel or the left side of the receiver.

THIS IS NOT CORRECT since it lacks the letter suffix.

The bore gage will consist of a 3 digit number, like 8,82, 8,83, 8,84, etc. and is found on the underside of the barrel adjacent to the numerical part of the serial number, as shown.

I would like to know if this bore gage number is stamped on the underside of the barrel.

So please provide the information as: 6734c, with bore gage, or 9147k, no bore gage.

Thanks in advance and be confident I will publish all the information when the study is completed.

Did you get my E-Mail???

Frank 06-01-2006 09:45 PM

Yup, I did and sent you the following reply yesterday:

Johnny,

Thanks for the data!! I am trying to determine when the bore gage was dropped. So far I can safely say somewhere in the D-Block. But there are always exceptions!

Best Regards,
Frank

byf 42, 8.82
number 8667 s

Frank 10-09-2006 09:47 AM

Bob M, thanks much or the data - most appreciated :)

Thierry, there is a small problem with your data. The serial number 8667s is too early for a 42 byf!! Could you have mis-read the "S" suffix, or perhaps the pistol is really a 41 byf. Please check!!

NavyLugerLover 10-09-2006 10:21 AM

I'll check, but I'm sure for the serial number with small S letter, and byf 42...
S is after k or L, so why did you say "too early"? It seems to be of the last lugers manufactured by Mauser.

the gunman 10-09-2006 10:37 AM

2762i no bore gauge

Frank 10-09-2006 07:14 PM

Richard, thanks a bunch for the date!!

Theirry, the 42 byf production began in the B-Block and ended in the N-Block. Most of the M & N - Blocks were contract pistols to either Portugal or Bulgaria!! So a "s" is either too early or too late!! I said too early because it couldn't be too late, since none were made after the "n"!!

John D. 10-09-2006 07:46 PM

OK - here is mine.... (WOW - I can't believe it has taken my EIGHT months to post this!!! )

SN: 3063 f suffix
No bore guage
E135 proofed

John D.

NavyLugerLover 10-10-2006 04:29 AM

"since none were made after the "n"": Are U sure?

I'm sure that gun is original...
I'll picture it in details to show you the letter, perhaps I'm wrong.

Frank 10-10-2006 09:48 AM

John D, I can't believe it took you 8 months either. Of course, you haven't been very busy :D Thanks for the info!!

John D. 10-10-2006 11:46 PM

Hey Frank..!!

Actually - I *forgot* I owned a 42 BYF RIG until I got many of mine out of the safe for Ed to look at..??!! I also found my 41 BYF RIG..??!! Hmmm....

I'm not senile - just getting old.. :)

Anyway - hopes the data helps!!!

Best to you Frank!!

John D.
