30 Luger Ammo Prices
 

I also have a .30 cal '06 Eagle I have never shot. I don't think its brand new but very nice so it should work fine. It has an ivory bead Marble front sight so it might be easy to focus on the target.

I got a nasty shock when I called the biggest gun shop around here (Huntington's in Oroville) and price a box of .30 Luger. $37.65 + tax for 50 rounds! Egad! That is 93 gr. Winchester.

Any ideas where a person can find .30 Luger for a better price than that? That's more expensive than .44 Mag!

David, that's pretty much the going price now, that's why no one here recommends buying a .30 Luger for shooting. To beat that price you pretty much have to buy it in quantity...

PS: And somehow I have ended up with four .30 lugers... a 8 inch shooter, a 6 inch shooter, a 4 inch and a collector...

Well I don't know how much booze costs these days but I do see cigarette prices coming in at around $4 a pack! I am super glad I don't smoke those things any more!

Lessee; $600 divided by $4 is 150 packs, and divided by 20 that's only 7 and 1/2 cartons!

That's good Ed because that makes the .30 cal Luger a bunch cheaper already! I think any puffer worth his salt can smoke 8 cartons in a month or two;

on second thought that's about 50 smokies per day; maybe 4 months.

I only have 2 .30 Luger guns I would ever consider shooting so I guess I am lucky.

I gave up smoking about mid August of last year. I was buying them on the internet at that time for about $11.00 a carton. 100% pure tobacco made by the Seneca-Cayuga indian tribe of Oklahoma. Darn good smoke. Ed, what do you mean take up drinking, did you give it up for tonight?

If one is still a "working stiff"...the price through such Internet sales for .30 cal. is not really an issue.

And since I have never smoked and only drink 2-3 beers or cocktails a year, those "vice" dollars can go eslewhere...

Between shooting my 9 mm or my .30 cal shooter lugers, I look much more forward to shooting the .30 cal rounds.

There is something "compact" and "contained" about shooting the .30 cal round...especially in a 4-3/4" or 6" barrel...which I am lucky to have in my .30 cal shooters...I find it really enjoyable to shoot.

So...at least this Member DOES recommend shooting the .30 luger...

I can see a certain justification for the 30 Luger; after all that is the round the gun was designed around as far as I know.

I have been thinking of reloading and read some threads about that on the forum.

Unless I misunderstand .30 Luger cases are not that common. Did I read that right or not? If they are common, where do you get them?

Also; for reloading; what kind of set up is best?

I see ads for the Dillon loaders and RCBS are made not far from us I think. I like the idea of a progressive reloader but also I guess there is a certain amount of romance to measuring each charge.

It already takes longer to find the ejected cases than to shoot the bullets!

I know it takes longer to load than it does to shoot.

Maybe if a person loads then that person shoots more carefully too?

Fiocchi generally sells considerably cheaper than Winchester. Starline makes brass.

I have a big blue plastic tarp. I spread that out and the brass is easy to spot.

I bought 10 boxes of the Winchester at a gun show a couple years ago. The seller had about 2 cases, I offered him $10 a box and he said ok. It never hurts to make an offer. All they can say is no.

New 30 L Winchester brass can usually be found on one of the three auctions ebay, auctionarms,gunbroker. I have around 2000 that I bought a couple years ago on ebay for about 3c each. If you don't put a tarp down, you have about 50% attrition when shooting. There are several jacketed bullets available from the major makers that work well. There are also a couple of the cast bullet makers that have specific bullets for the 30 Luger & Mauser.

I shoot my 30's a lot more than my 9's, they are just more fun!!!

If beginning reloading, I don't recommend getting a progressive loader. Start with a simple single stage from RCBS, Lee, Lyman, CH. You will need a press, dies, and a powder scale. Midway has RCBS "starter kits" for less than buying the seperate components cost. You may be able to find used equipment on the 3 auctions mentioned above cheaper than new stuff.

Once you start reloading, you will find that it is not cheaper, 'cause you will shoot more, but you can shoot a heck of a lot more for the same price!!!:cheers:

I agree with Hugh- good answer. Here in Sweden the most popular pistol for competition shooting in our class "A" (military or police type firearm as opposed to class "B"- olympic rules as far as firearm design goes) is the SIG 210, usually the -5 or -6 variation, in both 7.65 and 9mm. It�´s usually fairly easy to see who is shooting 7.65mm. ammo as most of those that do have a casing catcher mounted on the right grip over the ejection port to catch the ejected brass. Too bad that this is difficult to do on the Luger. I do the same with my Haemmerli 280 in its .32 SW long configuration, but with a couple hundred kilos of 9mm brass collected over the years lying around just waiting to be reloaded to feed my and my wifes 210s (and various other 9mms I own), we don�´t bother. A tip for those of you that do a lot of reloading: by using a "CasePro 100" ( www.casepro.net ) I am able to get better than 99% reusable 9mm casings as opposed to about 80% before I started using it on my "policed" brass. Gives me something to do during these long Swedish winter nights.

David, I just purchased .30 cal Luger ammo, new Fiocchi FMJ/HP for $19.95 abox of 50 including shipping. Purchased from Military Gun Supply in Ft. Worth, TX.
A prior buy I made of Lapau ammo had to be returned because I had about a 30% misfire rate with the Lapau. Hope this helps.
