Balky Forum

Its not a log-on problem, so I am starting a new thread.

The Forum has gotten very "balky" (for several weeks now), it will simply stop or give me a "site not found" error page several times during a session. I have to go away from it for a time and come back to find it operating again.

Dwight: Ditto. David

Schupo 01-02-2006 12:46 PM

Yes, on some days it simply will not load. Then, later in the day it shows up.

WolfsburgBob 01-02-2006 01:25 PM

Ditto!

Edward Tinker 01-02-2006 01:44 PM

yes me too.

has trouble loading pages, has trouble when editing.

John, there appears to be a delay?

Ed

wlyon 01-02-2006 02:17 PM

Same here. Almost hate to try anymore.

Herb 01-02-2006 02:17 PM

I agree, it's not working correctly and hasn't been for about two weeks or more.

Fritzer 01-02-2006 02:38 PM

I have also experienced the page not loading when bouncing around the site.
My experience has been to simply click the "refresh" icon on my browser and the page load will be successful.

I had just attributed it to a high activity - but John may know better.

I have never had to leave - and come back, the page would always load on the second try.

Just my experience.
Regards,
Fritz.

(PS. It just happened to me during this 'post reply' , it appears to be getting worse?)

John D. 01-02-2006 09:22 PM

Let me take a "look see" - but....

If I look at the server stats and the connection stats, the *only* time this Forum has been "off" is when I take it down to do a backup - which is every few days between 6AM and 8AM EST (before I go to work). The connection has not gone down for 87 days (and counting?)...

However, as I write this - on this server - I do have some fairly strong firewalls? I'm wondering if those are "bouncing" a few of you off if you try to re-hit the forum??

Let me take a look, OK??

Best to you!

John

Admin 01-02-2006 09:26 PM

OK - let's try this....

Can you tell me if that worked?

Thanks!

John

John D. 01-02-2006 09:48 PM

Hang on a minute.. I'm playing with the server and the NICS - so if you go "off line" it is only "me" ;)

John D.

Edward Tinker 01-02-2006 10:10 PM

see, i replied, it timed out and never replied...

John D. 01-02-2006 10:16 PM

I just rebooted... :) Since you are an Moderator - you can post while this forum is being REBOOTED "and closed" (you don't see my ADMIN notes like all the rest of the users - or "Forum is closed" posts/headers :)

JD

John D. 01-02-2006 10:19 PM

And oh - BTW - I got to see your error:

Link-ID == false, connect failed
mysql error: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)

mysql error number: 2003

Date: Monday 02nd of January 2006 09:12:50 PM

LOL!!! :)

Stay off while I am rebooting!!! :D

Fritzer 01-03-2006 12:44 AM

Hi John,

I gave it a try after your reboot.
By entering this text in a few different versions and hitting the preview reply, I think I was able to make the server do some work without generating a lot of extra reply messages in the thread. I added and deleted a couple of paragraphs along the way.

I had numerous failures during a "preview reply" testing operation.
The symptoms would appear to be unchanged, but it really appears random.

The only other hint might be that the amount of time that my status bar displays "connecting to lugerforum.com" when I hit preview is pretty long sometimes. The messages "waiting" & "transferring" always zip by really quickly. (I ran this time from firefox)
I had one similar failure using the spell check feature - the window remained blank with "connecting to lugerforum.com" in the status bar. I closed it - hit spell check again and it opened immediately.

(just had four consecutive failures - the connecting message stayed up over 30 seconds, (this time I hit stop, then the preview button again.) once it did load after about 28 seconds of the "connecting" message on the status line. (four more failures when I really tried to post the reply, and three trying to EDIT for these updates.)

I don't know if these results help you or not.
Best Regards,
Fritz.

Nothing's changed. -Very- frustrating.

Every other attempt to get into a forum results in web site not responding banner. If I can get in it takes several minutes.

Just thought you would like to know.

Pete Ebbink 01-05-2006 11:50 PM

Hi John D.,

For the past 2 weeks or so, I can view 1-2 pages at a time, but the next page I try to view brings up a "action cancelled" message...need to eixt and log back in then...

Been busy with a kitchen remodel these past 2 weeks at home...so I have kind of ignored it...but thought you should know...

Edward Tinker 01-05-2006 11:56 PM

and when I try to edit a post, or add a new post, half the time, it times out, and if I didn't copy my edits or the new post, they are lost... (hitting back button usually brings up the blank posting box):grr:

Dwight Gruber 01-06-2006 04:26 AM

Went on the Forum several times Thursday. Only balked twice. Seemed a lot snappier, too.

"and when I try to edit a post, or add a new post, half the time, it times out, and if I didn't copy my edits or the new post, they are lost... (hitting back button usually brings up the blank posting box)"

This has been happening to me for months and months...

EXTREMELY balky today.

Stu 01-07-2006 02:51 PM

Something strange going on. Been having this problem for quite a while.

Still, we should be grateful the site exists at all and it's still great value for money ;)

Stu

lew1 01-07-2006 05:46 PM

I have had the problem for months. Twice within the last 30 minutes.

Ron Smith 01-07-2006 09:10 PM

Sometimes it just zaps up and runs fine. Other times I have to click "refresh" to get it to come up. Like just now.

I'm beginning to develope a complex. I don't deal well with rejection...

Ponyman 01-08-2006 02:06 PM

I'm not sure it's just this site. YaHoo and eBay sometimes make me wait too long, then time out.

Dwight Gruber 01-08-2006 03:08 PM

I frequent a lot of sites, this Forum has become consistently worse than the occasional hiccup noticed elsewhere.

--Dwight

Curly1 01-08-2006 07:11 PM

I have yet to get through a session in the last few weeks of viewing w/o at least one hang up that I have to try several refresh of pages to get through

John D. 01-08-2006 09:37 PM

Hmm... OK - this Tuesday I'll have the day to spend on this.. I'll start with some simple things, like changing out the NICS and changing routers.. Let's see if that's the issue..? I know it's not the server or the Forum software (no errors in any of the logs)...

Anyway - as I post fixes up - I'll let you know in this thread, OK? Intermittent issues some of you seem to be having are some of the most difficult to track down - but we'll figure it out!

Best to you - and thanks for your support and patience!!

John D.

Dwight Gruber 01-09-2006 03:23 AM

John,

The thanks is to you for providing and supporting this forum. What kind of error reporting will be useful to you in this process?

--Dwight

John D. 01-09-2006 07:36 AM

Hey Dwight!

My thanks..! What I need are approximate times that you have to "reload" or the site doesn't open..? I can back-track those times to my circuit records (to see what kind of traffic was on the circuit at that time).. Also - your connection type would be GREAT - i.e.: dial-up, cable modem, etc.. I was looking at the circuits last evening - and the weekends are somewhat slower, but for that - I noticed a few of you were having difficulties still??

That's why I was guessing last evening that it may be a NIC or a router intermittently dropping packets to this Forum, as I'm not seeing the errors at the circuit level..??!!

Anyway - my thanks for any info you can share - and yep, it will be fixed - even if I have to move this to another T1 I have on line....

Best to you - and thanks again!

John D.

Edward Tinker 01-09-2006 10:01 AM

John, I experience this also, at work and at home, both broadband. It just times out, many times when I am replying or being obtuse, and then when you hit back, it is gone (refreshes or something).

for the last month or two, I would say several times a visit, which is about 10 times a day

It is common enough that folks have bitched  and common enough where it is a frustration on my part :(

ed

Rod WMG 01-09-2006 11:10 AM

Ed has described the situation well. He has written the post I would have as it describes the situation perfectly.

Dwight Gruber 01-09-2006 12:19 PM

John,

Dialup for me. Over the course fo the problem so far I have been going on-forum several times during the day, all lhours, and it has been happening pretty regularly irrespective of time. I'll start to keep better track.

--Dwight

John D. 01-09-2006 07:10 PM

Thanks Dwight, Ed and Rod!!

Also Dwight - I got your e-mail from this am - thanks for the detail as well... I just posted an Announcement, so let me try a few things over the next few hours..

Best to you!

John D.

Curly1 01-09-2006 09:35 PM

Just happend to me around 8:35 est trying to get to thelog in page, did a refresh and everthing went ok

lew1 01-10-2006 01:37 AM

Are not computers fun. Its a shame that the rules that are applied for recalls on cars are not applied to computers, servers, programs, etc. :)

c3006 01-10-2006 06:09 AM

I have had very little trouble, just a couple of time outs and Im used to that my wife puts me there every time I buy a new gun. :D clint

John D. 01-10-2006 09:17 AM

OK - I have a silly question for the folks having difficulties....

When you use this Forum - do you open the forum from the main site:
http://www.lugerforum.com/

OR... do you open the Forum in it's own "window" - like this:
http://forum.lugerforum.com/

I'm just wondering if the frame isn't pulling the Server page load across my own circuits for a few of you??

Also - what I've changed in the past few hours last evening are: a software update, two new NICS, additional memory...

thanks!

John D.

tudorbug 01-10-2006 10:52 AM

John: I'm one of the ones having difficulty and I open the forum using the second option that you listed. David
