Joint effort "Frankenshooter"

[B] Finally, nearly finished. This is my Luger Forum .30 shooter. Just goes to show that it pays to be a member of this and Jan Still's forum. With the help of the members, I have a nice, albeit mismatched, shooter. For a total investment of less than $400 , so far.

The "enigma" .30 upper was purchased from Tom Heller.

The upper was refinished by Ted Green.

The grips I got from George Anderson.

The small parts for the frame from Marc "Kidvet"

The toggle train from a member who's name escapes me, Sorry!

The frame is from a non-active member, who contacted me.

And , yes. It is unit marked.

All I need is a Trigger spring, Takedown lever spring and a Holdopen.

Thanks guys!, Ron:D

Ron Smith 11-30-2005 10:34 AM

Hi Ed,
It is becoming one of my favorites. Can't wait to get the last three parts so I can take it out and try it. I may borrow them from my other shooter.

Hey Ron,

Nice effort...I think you will really enjoy shooting a 6" .30 cal. luger...!

BTW...what is the story behind the "1917 N" chamber markings...???

p.s. I can help on the TD lever srping. Send me your address to pebbink@pacbell.net and I will get one in the mail to you...FREE...! No need for you to continue to rob graveyards for missing, important parts...:D

pipeman45 11-30-2005 04:02 PM

What a beauty! I would love to put one together one in 9mm. Please tell us how it shoots.

Stu 11-30-2005 06:58 PM

I've a spare holdopen floating around I think, but no spring. I'm not home right now but I'll look it out if you want it.

Stu

Pete Ebbink 11-30-2005 07:18 PM

Ron,

The TD spring went out in the US Mail today to your home in OR...

Hello Ron,

That is a nice looking L¶¶ger. I know you are proud of it and can't wait to try it out. I always liked shooting the 30 Luger more than the 9mm. It just seems to have a smoother and quicker recoil.

Enjoy,

Ron Smith 11-30-2005 10:13 PM

Hi Chester,

How have you been? Haven't heard from you for awhile. Thanks, it's not a collector by any means, but I guess that's why I like it. I can shoot it without gritting my teeth before each shot.

Stu, If you find it let me know what you want for it. Thanks!

Pete, I truly appreciate it. As far as the "1917 N". It's anybodies guess. I have posted it everywhere trying to find out something. Nobody knows what it is. Hence the 'Enigma" discription.

Ron

Well, Ron, I'll add my praise. Nice looking and interesting gun.

This will probably unsettle some who are pure collectors, but the purpose of firearms is to fire. There's something sad about a gun which is never shot.

Enjoy, and give us a range report when possible.

Ron Smith 12-01-2005 10:43 PM

Hi Rod,

I'll let you know, if it ever stops raining. Like about the middle of June. This here's Oregon ya know. ;)

Ron Smith 12-17-2005 10:05 AM

G.T.'s magazine bottom. It really dresses up the old shooter. He does fantastic work. The Swiss style insert adds eligant class to it.

Thanks G.T., It is a beauty!

I also have to add Pete Ebbink to the mix. Thanks for the take down lever spring Pete.

Ron

Hi Ron, I'm happy to be able to add to your shooter project... looks as if I left a bit of stain on the disc.. you can just wipe it off with a small rag or patch... But, after you get your rig up and running, i'm more interested in how your re-tuned mag. functions! If you depress the follower a few times, you'll notice how much smoother and more consistant it feels... Best to you Ron, and thanks for the kind words... til.....lat'r....GT :)

Just wanted to revive this post for the new members, so that they have an idea what the forum has always been about. Sharing , learning , teaching and Friendship.

And I might add, Helping ME build Lugers... :D

Also an additional thanks, and some recognition for a great bunch of people. Since I haven't had the opportunity to pay many of you back for the assist.

Ron Smith 05-15-2007 06:42 PM

Hi Richie,

Yup, it's not going anywhere. It's my 9mm shooter.

Six foot Navy? Now that I gotta see! :D
Just kidding gunman, I often mis-hit the shift, too...

Ron, thanks for bumping up this thread for us new guys. Amazing what you can do with a mismatching gun.

MFC 05-16-2007 01:40 AM

Six foot Navy?
You think Jerry can make a holster for it? :p

the gunman 05-16-2007 08:22 AM

Ron glad to hear its still in the "family" That sure was a nice piece

Ron Smith 05-16-2007 08:46 AM

This the "6 Foot" Navy that Richie was referring to. I bought it from him a couple of years ago.

A 1937 S/42 Mauser that someone rebuilt into a Navy Luger using an original Navy rear sight toggle link, and a turned down and shortened Artillery barrel. They even used the fine tune front sight band from the arty barrel. It is a very nice and accurate shooter.

Very nice Ron. You should have a lot of fun with it and I would have to think it would be pretty accurate. Hopefully the rains will stop and you can get out. Brent

Ron Smith 05-16-2007 09:58 AM

Hi Brent,

I have since shot the .30, last fall. It shoots very well. I discovered that Lugers don't like freezing temperatures if they are over lubricated. A tiny bit of light oil is the answer.

policeluger 05-16-2007 10:41 AM

Send the gun to me Ron, I'll shoot it all year long or until you run out of ammo....

Ron Smith 05-16-2007 11:13 PM

I knew I could count on you Howard.

jamese 05-17-2007 07:01 AM

Hey Ron,
you can send it to me, I'm sure your guns would like to winter in Florida.

I'll take good care of them.

Jim

Ron Smith 05-17-2007 08:05 AM

Hey Jim,

I have been looking at an AM 180 that is making my mouth water. I could send them to you for $12,000. Then I could buy the 180 and wouldn't feel too put out about giving them up. Or Howard could split the difference with you, and you could time-share. Only 6K each!

I have been seriously contemplating selling off some Lugers to raise the cash.
