1938 S/42 sn. 8822e bore gage: 8,82 (need acceptance stamps)

Additional 1937 and 1938 serial numbers and descriptions of the right receiver acceptance stamps will help determining the transition from DE/63 to SW/63 and the transition from DE/63 to DE/83. This information would be greatly appreciated and reported on this Forum.

Jan I have sent a request to the son of the owner to confirm the data for you... the gun is over 150 miles from me...and the owning vet no longer has eyes that can see things that small... I will let you know when and if I get the info. Sorry my hand wasn't so steady when I took this photo months ago...

Note: the "83' in the E/83 is not well formed and the "8" looks somewhat like a "6" slightly modified to forum an "8". See attached photograph. Shown is a SE/83 left and a SE63 right.

Thanks for the information. Table updated. There are reports similar to yours; that in the 1937-1938 "b" and "c" suffix range, it is difficult to determine the difference between the "63" and "83".

Bad die Jan? An 8 or a 6 struck with a dull die would cause problems?

Jan C Still 01-07-2005 04:59 PM

Ed
Dies usually have small parts break off or wear down. The photo shown (1938 sn 2654)above definitley has the top loop of the "8" completed and I would estimate that it is a correct "8".

The various photographs of magazines and right receiver stamps indicates original "8" stamps on the Lugers in the 1938 S/42, 599m to 2654n serial range. However, these "8"s are not well formed. They looks like a "6" that had the top loop completed to make the "8".

1938 3483m SE83 / SE 63 MTP. matching mag has SE83

1938 7433g Looks like SE83 / SE 63 MTP. The first is hard to tell but under light and magnification looks like an 83.

hope this helps.

Not real clear how this one fits in, but here's my Luger:

"1938"
SN#7692 (BUT mismatched S/42 gothic "S" toggle)
Left proof: Stick Eagle "63" (strong & definite)
Middle proof: Stick Eagle "?" (faint worn 2-digit die)
Right proof: "Imperial" (type) eagle
VOPO gun mit Neu Brandenburg marking

Jan,

Actually the frame and 1938-dated receiver DO match. The number 7692 appears on the left side of the receiver just above the thumb latch. The same number 7692 also appears on the front of the frame below the barrel. There is no letter with either number. Neither number is struck over or ground off. Both pieces show field use.

The sideplate, toggle and toggle-link are the mismatched parts: Toggle link is marked "S/42" BUT with a Fraktur style "S" which I take to be a 1934 part. The toggle & link assembly appear to be a brand-new condition unit based on their identical color and like-new satiny finish.

Can you tell me this about my gun: Because the mismatched Mauser coded toggle-assembly appears to be a 1934(?) part and NOT original to the 1938 receiver and frame, could the 1938 dated receiver and frame be any other manufacturer BESIDES Mauser?

If so, what other manufacturer could such a 1938-dated Luger with no other marking outside of proof stamps be?

Thanks!

Thanks for the information.

Your 1938 dated Luger is a partly mismatched Vopo rework(these Lugers are sometimes re-manufactured from mismatched parts). My experience with reworks is that mismatched parts can be made to match. Sometimes the serial number on the front of the frame will be machined off and matched by applying newly stamped letters. Sometimes such a reworked/reserialed frame can be difficult to detect. Such an example is shown on page 114 of Weimar Lugers.

The research at hand concerns the acceptance stamps and serial numbers found on 1937 and 1938 dated Lugers applied during the manufacturing/proofing process. In my opinion, it is best to leave out reworked Lugers, to avoid possible mistakes.

max2cam 01-18-2005 10:35 AM

Jan,

You know your stuff!

I went back and dismantled my Luger and took a closer look at the number on the frame. Sure enough, it does look ground off there and with a magnifying glass I can detect 2 faint numbers behind the "7692." So this Luger appears to be more of parts gun than I thought.

Am I correct to think the Fraktur "S" S/42 toggle assembly makes that a 1934-only part?

The stamping on the receiver looks original, but who knows!

Yes, a VOPO gun. From somebody elses post I think it has the Neu Brandenburg VOPO sunburst marking and district number. Also shows the capture "X".

This gun must have had an interesting history -- or "guns" in this instance.

Thanks!

Jamka 02-16-2005 12:58 PM

Jan,

This is a late reaction, but my job kept me away from my Luger for more then a full month...

Before I go to the basement with a magnifying glass and a torch, I would like to know if you want data from all the 1937 dated Lugers. Apart from 2 S/42 I also have:
Krieghoff (1),
Latvian contract v suffix (5)
Commercial (2) v suffix.

The 4 1938 dated I have are all S/42 stamped.

As soon as you tell me what to look for, and what not, I will do the job and let you know the results shortly.

Best regards,

Jan,
All matching 1937 S/42 Sn: 3997 (suffix is either a "Z" or "Y"-there was a thread with this debate a few months ago on my Luger where most think it is a "Z". Due to the gothic script, it's hard to read).
