I can't believe they deactivated a Borchardt. I guess it makes sense though, considering it is a weapon of mass destruction that can be easily purchased and has readily available spare parts.

Doubs 12-11-2003 12:47 AM

The Colt Woodsman almost makes me cry! To think that somebody would actually screw up a beautiful pistol like that... the first real gun I ever fired... when I was 5 years old. ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG!!!

John -Melb 12-11-2003 08:29 AM

My dear American friends,
You do not know how lucky you are, in Australia, deactivated (and replica) handguns are subject to the same level of control (and safekeeping requirements) as a modern handgun.....

Antique handguns that have any form of ignition system post-flintlock are subject to the same level of control as a modern handgun......

At the start of this year, my collection included a 1917 Arty, a 1917 P08, a Browning M10, a Mk 1 Enfield, plus about ten others. My Uberti Colt M62 Copy had my name engraved and the backstrap nickle plated as a engagement present from my wife (married 15 years last September, 2 Girls). All this stuff is now gone, my collection now consists of a pinfire, a .25 Auto, and a percussion pistol.

As for levels of armed crime, it continues to rise, and the anti-gun lobby continue to call for tougher laws on the private ownership of firearms, and the government continues to listen to them........

They.. There.. One is... Waitaminute - I can't see through the tears..... THEY DEACTIVATED A KRIEGHOFF??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jon-Melb - thanks for your comments on what it is like in other parts of the world.... I find it so foreign to my thinking and beliefs - I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like..... And, at the same time - makes me realize just how treasured our "freedoms" are here, in the USA... Thanks for posting....

John -Melb 12-11-2003 08:44 AM

I forgot to mention, it is a very OLD .25.

John Sabato 12-11-2003 10:28 AM

They even deactivated a single-shot LIBERATOR pistol... only a very few known to exist...

John Sabato 12-11-2003 05:24 PM

Tac,

We are prepared to offer you asylum... but you will have to hurry... there are lots of folks trying to get in here... hurry before they slam the door shut!

Freischütz 12-11-2003 10:24 PM

I don't see how any fun or pride of ownership could exist after deactivation.

Perhaps Mr. Foley could explain why he retained the P.08 appearing in the Gallery? I would think that looking at it would be like salt in an open wound.

Edward Tinker 12-11-2003 10:39 PM

It is still history, non-shootable, but history.

I have thought of this long and hard, wondered the same thing. But to have it is better than to forever get rid of it.

It would be an open-wound, but time heals, at least a little.

I too would keep it, but would feel sad about it.

In Germany gun law is also very strict, you need a special permisson to own guns and you only get this permission when you have a need of guns.

There are three different reasons why you are allowed to have guns:

-hunter (a really difficult hunting exam must be solved)
-sport shooter (you must be a member in a sport shooting club and have to train regularly)
-collector (you have a very small field of collecting weapons, for example only lugers from the german army 1914-1918, no other handguns. so trying to buy a -lets say- mauser, its not allowed. And to get a collectors permission you have to take a test from your collection field, its difficult, even it sounds easy)

But this is not enough! After having the permission you have to act in a very strict field, put the guns in an expensive safe, and so on. Its not allowed to carry them in any way.

So I can understand why people collect deactivated weapons, I collect them too, because its difficult to get a weapon owning permission and a lot of collectors in Germany collect deactivated guns..
And remember: its still a piece of history!

This from the home of Lugers..

Lugerdoc 12-18-2003 11:12 AM

Karmast, Thanks for the update on your current laws. It's unfortunate that so many pistols have to be modified by stupid laws that don't really protect any one, except from themselves. It would be interesting to see how many US collectors could pass one of your Luger collector's test. I miss our "quizs" from the early days. Anyone up for another one of these? TH

iF YOU CAN AFFORD IT YOU CAN OWN IT,GREAT PLACE TO LIVE

Edward Tinker 01-07-2004 07:18 PM

Henry, are we talking about Germany? UK? Or Georgia?

Here in the US many people collect deactivated full autos, due the the expense and paperwork involved in owning a live one. It is a shame so many beautiful lugers are being butchered and chopped up due to silly gun laws. How many lugers were used in a crime in the world last year Any??? I think everyone in the world should send their lugers to America for safekeeping. You can come visit them anytime you like :D

You Brits and Germans can actually come here and stay and drive cars and own guns but ya gotta learn to talk Mexican....Australians too.

Thats's Mexican isn'it?

I'm a Brit and I've owned a few deactivated weapons including an MP44 and Thompson M1A1. I'd love to have a Luger though and so a deac it must be because I have absolutely no choice in the matter, that's the law.

Considering the huge amount of political pressure here to ban all guns including deacs, replicas, blank firers and even air guns, I think us Brits are still quite lucky at the moment.

But...if any of you yanks need someone to rent your spare room I'd be only too happy to oblige!

John Sabato 01-30-2004 07:20 AM

Hmmm, If all the Brit's who are gun loving folks would emmigrate here, that would strengthen our citizen ranks and abandon all the folks that are gun haters over there to deal with the criminals who haven't turned in their guns... that would sure convince them of the error of their choice to give up their rights as free men!

I am sure we could find you a place to live Ben... and if you have a marketable skill, a job would find you... It all depends on how committed you are to live the rest of your life as a free man... as I have told Tacfoley on multiple occasions... hurry before they slam the immigration door!

Hello All!,

I hate to say this but I believe it to be true. It is just a matter of time, 20 maybe 40 or 50 years before all the "horror stories" that we are hearing from Canada, U.K., Australia, etc. WILL become a REALITY here in the U.S. Despite the currently 37 states that have "right to carry" laws, I have seen the writing on the wall: CREEPING SOCIALISM, and I DO NOT like it!!!!!!!! Sorry to be such a buzzkill. Mike

John Sabato 01-30-2004 09:05 PM

Not if we stand up for our rights Mike... Vote for Conservative Pro-gun political candidates and work against their opponents... I bet if you check, you will find that conservative pro-gun candidates are more often than not on the RIGHT side of most issues.

Expose the opponents lies of their opponents for what they are and keep this country and it's government on track with the constitution that has served us well for over 200 years.

What makes America different from most of the world is that we founded this nation on Freedom. If it happens here, it won't be because it HAD to happen... it will be because of indifference...

"The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

panda 01-31-2004 02:45 AM

"If it happens here, it won't be because it HAD to happen... it will be because of indifference..."

This applies everywhere.

"Expose the opponents lies of their opponents for what they are and keep this country and it's government on track with the constitution that has served us well for over 200 years."

This is of no use whatsoever when a majority of the voters don't feel concerned by the right to own weapons as they won't listen for lack of interest. Usually they are the same who don't care about fighting for their own freedom. My feeling is that this is a cultural thing: French, Brits & Germans historically are subjects of their Kings/Queens and rely on the State to be governed ("guided") and protected whereas people in the US are still (free) citizens who want to rely upon themselves and don't want to delegate the job.

(Actually Poland reintroduced the right to be armed at home after the fall of communism when the State realised it could not contain crime. Depriving people of weapons does not seem to be inevitable even in Europe. It's maybe time for the UK to do the same thing - so far gun control has been a perfect contra productive failure.)

riffraff 01-31-2004 07:35 PM

I definately agree with the sentiments of the above two posts. But the facts are,(as I see them), the country is becoming more cityfied as in not "country folk" and there are more and more "sheeple" who do not care about anything except what they can "get" and/or how to manipulate the system to "get" more. Just look at the gun laws that have been enacted in Kalifornia, New York, and some northeastern states. Add to this the fact that the U.S. supreme court has been "dodging" the 2nd amendment issue for decades now. They are doing this (I believe) because if all the historical letters and writings of the the writers or the Constitution were studied it would be undeniably evident that the right to keep and bear arms IS a PERSONAL NOT A COLLECTIVE right. Oh well, off my box. Mike
