One $ per Luger....

Hi everyone, I was thinking that maybe we could all contribute one dollar for every Luger that we own towards the operation and maintenance of our LugerForum. Easy for me--I've usually got four bucks in my pocket almost any day! John D. never asks for any money, but I'm sure it costs plenty to keep our site up and running and hacker-proof, so how about it everyone? And while we're at it, maybe John D. could give us some idea about what it does cost to keep this favorite Forum of ours working so well. I realize that the "one dollar per Luger" could be a real bite for some of our members (sorry Ralph), but I suspect most of us can afford it. And with over 2,000 members, we could really bring in some good support funds for our Website. And after all, "tis the season".

Edward Tinker 12-04-2004 06:50 PM

I agree.

I know about how much it costs for a year, and I'd guess it is the cost of two Weimar Police Pistols EACH year... Or One Krieg every 1.5 years :D

If John would start a Paypal account, we could drop in a "fee" or yearly / monthly amount, they do it at another site I visit... They call it a "war-chest" for operating expenses...

Sure be happy to do so. have to count up my lugers
not sure how many. I feel its a great idea.

John D. 12-04-2004 10:10 PM

Hi Folks....

First - my thanks to Doug for suggesting this in private first. As most know - there are no Sponsors, no banners and no advertising on this site - nor for the P38 and PPk/S sites. I do it as a Collector and an enthusiast - as much as you folks are the same collectors. However - honestly - the costs of running this site continue to increase. As many of you know - I put in new circuits a few months ago, which double bandwidth. As well - for all the firearms forums sites - they actually run across 3 different servers - and three seperate circuits.

So to all pledging support of the site - my sincerest thanks. And to those who have supported this site - you can see "LugerForum Patron" in their title. In that way - I guess the right analogy is the site will always be free and open, like PBS - but those who find value will get some special recognition - just as my way of saying "thank you".

Also - if you'd like to use Paypal - you can use my e-mail address of johnd@rennlist.com for Paypal.

As well - one of my first priorities to to buy a software license to change the features and format of this Forum. It's expensive - and I run it in another car Forum I host - but it has some compelling features whoch are lacking in this Forum software.

Finally - as for me, I just took on a 3rd part-time job to help pay for all this fun. BUT - I have to tell you, it's a TERRIFIC job. I just took on a part time position in a gun store for the first time ever. It's incredible, as on the floor at any time are over 50-60 customers - over 100,000 firearms in inventory - and a constant flow of trade-ins, which include (not as often) Lugers and collectors firearms. I've been asked to be the advisor for any Lugers that come in - so even as a part time sales professional - it's got it's rewards....

Again - my thanks for your post, Doug - and the support of the Members who have posted....

My Best,

John D.

Edward Tinker 12-05-2004 12:35 AM

Great, I don't have 20 lugers, but I can support with $20 dollars!

Can y'all do the same?

Ed

lugerholsterrepair 12-05-2004 01:28 AM

Ed, John D...I can and will be happy to. This subject has been kicked about before and John has always been adament about no help. I have always thought this was stingy on his part...not letting us help! He gets to spend just his money! Since he posted his Pay Pal info I guess he can't stop me now can he?

If Ed is pitching in 20 bucks and work on the Forum for hundreds of unpaid hours I guess any one can do as much.

I would be ashamed if I didn't. It's the absolute least a person could do. Jerry Burney

John D. 12-05-2004 09:31 AM

I just wanted to say "Thank You" to all who have donated and committed your support to this Forum... My sincerest thanks. As well - in the next day or two, each of you will be receiving a private Thank You via e-mail or Private Message. Later today, at the top of the Forum (Help & Feedback) - I'd like to start a thread with only the screen names of "LugerForum Patrons" - so if you'd rather be anonymous - please let me know if youâ??d rather not be named and not have â??Patronâ? in your title, OK?

Based on your show of support â?? next week, I'll be purchasing an additional software license to upgrade this Forum and features. This ability to move this Forum into a superior format is to your credit - certainly not mine.

For that - my sincerest and warmest Thank You!

John D.

Hello John D.,

For those of us not using PayPal could you provide a mailing address for us?

Season's Greetings To All,

Lugerdoc 12-05-2004 12:12 PM

John, How about posting your mailing address for those of us who don't use paypal. Years ago, when I was learning the gunsmithing end of the business, I worked in a small SF Bay Area store for no pay, but I was given a glass case to sell my stuff and had first option on any German pistols that came in. That's how I purchased my one an only Borchardt for $2500, but that was 30 years ago. TH

SteveM 12-05-2004 12:16 PM

John,I'd like to chime in also. How about a mailing address?

SteveM

John D. 12-05-2004 01:40 PM

I have to say - I'm speechless by many of your PMs, posts and e-mails. And for me to be left speechless - is a rare thing indeed..!

Just know how appreciated your efforts and support is...

For a USPS address, it is:

John Dunkle
PO Box 111
Portsmouth NH 03802-111
USA

Again - my sincerest thank you......

Also - Tom... I actually am working just over minimum wage at the gun store - so I have you beat there a bit However - honestly, while the salary is important right now, I can honestly say it's the first job I've had where I love the work! While I keep waiting for a wayward sole to walk in with a minty HK, in the meantime - there are many P-38s, WW2 HPs, and "shooter Lugers" that do come in - and as you had - I have the privilege to review them first before they "hit the sales floor" while I'm at work. A Borchardt at $2500 probably isn't happening in today's terms - but I can hope if one does come in, itâ??s brought in at a reasonable price!!!!!

Again - my thanks to all....

John D.

For those of you who have never used Pay Pal, I recommend you try it if you get the chance. It is easy to register and very handy for sending money, not only for Ebay but for most anything. I believe they have restrictions on guns and I don't agree with their politics but it is a useful service on occasion.I think they are owned by eBay. There may be a better service and if anyone knows about one let me know.

John, Your gig at the gunshop has always been a dream job I would love to have! Not that I would want any job necessarily but that one would certainly be interesting! WORK IS a four letter word....Jerry Burney

Luke 12-05-2004 04:11 PM

I can second Jerry's (lugerholsterrepair) comments about PayPal.

I just used the PayPal system, and it was user-friendly and seems to be foolproof.

Hello Fellows,
I totally agree with this project. I am going to use my paypal account.

Thanks for all your work

Ron Wood 12-06-2004 09:08 AM

I am dropping out of Paypal. There is a $2000 total spending limit for purchases on eBay. Once you reach that cumulative limit you may not use Paypal unless you become "confirmed" by providing Paypal with your bank account information. I do not feel there is any legitimate reason for this invasion of privacy. All my purchases through Paypal are billed to my credit card. Since Paypal has my credit card account information, they can check on my credit status and confirm that my bills are paid completely and on time. Access to my complete banking records serves no purpose other than opening up another possible avenue for nuisance offers for unwanted services and possibly fraudulent use of the account. Even though Paypal probably deserves a good reputation for security, there is no excuse for subjecting its users to another path to identity theft.

I will miss the convenience of Paypal. End of soapbox.

Luke 12-06-2004 09:24 AM

Ron -

I noted the $2000 limit, but I did NOT realize that it was cumulative. I also declined to provide any banking information, and I agree that it is just another avenue to potential trouble.

I have a Savings Account that I leave almsot nothing in, and set up for this purpose. In that way, I can swap money from paypal if I have sold something and put money into paypal, all on-line and I check / verify the amounts all the time.

Ed

policeluger 12-06-2004 09:57 AM

Ed, I also have a savings account with nothing in it, wasn't on purpose.

John Sabato 12-06-2004 11:21 AM

I, like Ed, have a checking account that was set up for my discretionary gun money... and ebay purchases. I have used eBay/Paypal for a couple of years and have not had a problem with their administration... and only one bad transaction where I bought a 122 luger mag, only to find out it was so bent that it wouldn't insert into either of my Lugers... and the seller would make no adjustments.

My close friend GT, came to my rescue on that one by remanufacturing the mag tube to original spec's... It is my favorite shooter mag now...but I digress...

Anyway... Paypal, like any medium for the exchange of money must be understood and standard precautions taken... There are also fees collected on the RECEIPT of funds once you reach a certain level of cash flow... There is never a fee for sending money... and I don't bother to tell Paypal for what purpose my funds are being sent/received... THAT is simply none of their business.

Don M 12-06-2004 12:25 PM

John,

As a relatively new member (July-Aug 2004) and owner of only two Lugers, I am sending $20 via snail mail. Yours was the first forum I found when I inherited a Luger rig from my uncle's estate last July and wondered what I had. It was the site where I learned about this rig's history and developed an even closer tie with my late uncle. It was also where I met a number of people who have been of great assistance (as well as a few characters).

Your and Jan Still's forums were also the cause of my current obsession with Weimar police unit marks, leading me to develop a database of these marks (500, so far) and to lie awake at nights trying to puzzle out their many variations! However, I don't think I can hold either of you legally liable for this affliction.

Thanks for all you do.

unspellable 12-06-2004 02:16 PM

If it's one dollar for each Luger I have, do I send fifty cents for my Erma Luger look-a-like?

Mike Fitz 12-06-2004 03:25 PM

Hi John,
Thanks for making this forum and the P-38 forum available.
Happy to make a donation and have done so via PayPal.

Regards,
Mike

DougT 12-06-2004 03:33 PM

Good point, unspellable--how much do you think I should donate for my Stainless Mitchell (just kidding)? It's a 1993 P.08, that I bought over a year ago. It led me to find the LugerForum and buying more (non reproduction) Lugers. A while back, I decided to turn it, so I put it up for consignment sale at the gunshop where I bought it. After three months, it didn't sell for the price I was asking ($350--what I paid for it), so I decided to keep the poor thing and give it a home. Now I'm kinda glad I still have it because it's what got me into all this "Luger stuff". I call it "the Luger that nobody wanted". Sort of warm & fuzzy, don't ya think?

lugerholsterrepair 12-06-2004 05:02 PM

Ron, I agree that Pay Pal is probably not perfect as far as security goes..What is? I guess anything can happen with many financial transactions we all make. I have never had a problem but have heard about others that have for some reason. It's all a risk I suppose.

John, we sent you 40 bucks...20 for myself and Ellie, who is a member, sent you 20. Look for it in your Pay Pal acct. You should get a notice.

I hope all the active members get on board with this and give John D some support. It's the least we can do....Thanks John! Jerry & Ellie Burney

Edward Tinker 12-06-2004 06:51 PM

Hey, make sure you darn active "lurkers" :D send in the money too!

schwob 12-06-2004 10:46 PM

John, count me in, via snail mail....Happy Holidays......Bob

DougT 12-07-2004 12:44 AM

Now now Ed--active lurkers need love too. Back in February, I posted a message confessing my own lurking...to which Wes replied that "lurking should not become a lost art". Lurkers are learners who aren't ready to join in the conversation yet.

Edward Tinker 12-07-2004 12:52 AM

nah, I am just "encouraging" these young folks :D

Brent B. 12-07-2004 06:40 AM

I'm glad Doug T made the suggestion. I've learned a lot from Luger Forum and appreciate all the work that John's put into it. I felt really good about chipping in.

unspellable 12-07-2004 08:32 AM

Doug T, I'd be glad to give $350 for a good Mitchell Luger any day of the week.

John D. 12-07-2004 09:06 PM

Hi all......

Again - my thanks for your support in providing this Forum to all collectors and enthusiasts. To be honest - I couldn't do it without you - especially in the upgrades - which I hope, will be set later this week or early next week... When it's ready to go - I'll post above, as quite a bit will change in this Forum and fomat - and for the better, I suspect.

So to each and all of you that have posted in this thread, PMed me and committed your support - my simple and humble "Thank you". You are what collecting is all about - certainly this Forum and the community that has developed from it's humble roots.

My Best to all,

John D.

Pay Pal cash on the way. Thanks John for the great forum.

trigger643 12-09-2004 11:58 PM

let me see, hum 2 lugers (1.5, really, Thor is still working on the other half), a c/96 from Tom, who I met on this board and is a total stand up guy, a byf from Lugercollector I had to sell when lost my job in January after 17 years in commercial finance, the job is almost as hard to replace as that P.08 will be... A c/96 rig Jerry made for me, then restored an Audley for a colt woodsman, now has my HK P.08 holster, and I've asked him to consider a holster for the AE 1900...

The wealth of experience and knowledge I access to on this board...

The hours my bride has spent looking over my shoulder saying "don't you get tired of that" while searching this board...

my contribution is on the way...

John:

I sent you a contribution via Paypal. Thanks for everything you do for all of us Luger Nuts!!

Best Regards,

My Sincerest thank you to all..! Just as an update - I purchased the new license for the software this week! Since my new job has me working weekends - I'll only have early next week to start the programming and make some changes to the servers. When it's set to come on line, I'll post a note as to how everything will work, and then put up a temporary test site - so you can play with the features to get used to them before we go "live". Since the new format will have quite a few new "bells & whistles" (yes - even a spilling chicker ), it may take some getting used to for some of the folks....

Also - below is a list of first names/screen names that made all this possible. So, rather then thank me - look for the folks who have LugerForum Patron in their SIG (with a few to be added as I get to the postoffice)... To the new LugerForum Patrons (I think I have you all from the recent weeks?), my sincerest Thank You!

Just to clairify above, as someone PMed me about a name missing above.. Please know that through the years, I've added "LugerForum Patron" to several individuals names who are not listed above. Simply - they are folks who went out of their way, and performed "random acts of kindness" for other users of the site - or supported this site previously. Therefore, folks like G.T., Tom A., Ron W., Ted, and others aren't included in the list above, as that compilation are only the new folks - or folks that donated once again in reply to Doug's thread. However - it certainly doesn't diminish their role and efforts over the years.

As well - on the new forum software, these folks will have some special features contained by virtue of their support. It's one of the only way's I could even begin to say "Thank You"...!

Best to you!

John D.
