Jerry,
What price would you ask to reproduce a period holster in pigskin for a 1900 commercial?

Ron Wood 08-29-2002 01:31 AM

Gentlemen (and possibly ladies):
You have just witnessed the genesis of a work of art! Nice job Jerry. I am dumbfounded.

Sweet Pigskin Holster!

Beautiful work, Jerry. Ready to tackle one in Alligator or Armadillo, now?

Gentlemen, Thank you all for your kind comments. I do appreciate them.

Wes, The problem I have in re-creating a 1900 holster for you is at least twofold. I have no pattern from which to work so the project would be more difficult and less acurate than I would desire. The accuracy issue is foremost in my mind as all the work I do must at least approximate if not duplicate actual dimensions in all respects and use period methods of construction. The second part of this problem which pretty much precludes the first, is cost. Providing that I could come by actual measurements and perhaps hold an actual period holster in my hands the cost of duplicating a holster like this is high because of all the time involved. I was asked to make two baby Luger holsters last year and did so for two clients. The holsters were each different in size to fit different pistols. One Army and one Police. Each one took me over ten days to build. Not full time days of course but none the less it was quite a bit of time. I charged $600.00 for each. While this seems wildly expensive, even to me, I charged it because of the extreme time involved in building the molds and forms necessary to make a completely custom, smaller than normal, Luger holster. The two clients who purchased these were happy to get them as the pistols they plan to put into them cost $2000.00 and up and as far as I know I am the only person in the World who is willing to make Baby Luger holsters. I would look around and see if any commercial company is offering the holster you want in a reproduction model. That would be the cheapest route, if any are offered.

Hugh, I don't use any of the leathers you suggest because I have to shoot holes in them for my thread and the ammunition costs were getting out of hand...I'll bet you have ample acccess to armadillo in your neck of the woods!

Hi Jerry! Outstanding work of art! Outstanding!!! till...later...G.T.

G.T., Thank you very much. I am anxious to put together this rig with the beautiful magazine bottoms you are making for me. I am making a Navy double magazine pouch out of pigskin to go with the whole thing. Two of your mag bottoms in the pouch and one in the pistol. Ought to look nice no? I will post photo's of the mag pouch with the new mag bottoms when it is all together...Thanks again. Jerry Burney

Wonderful craftmanship.

John Sabato 08-30-2002 10:20 AM

Jerry would grace us with photos of his mistakes... but I don't think he has made any

REALLY Nice work Jerry!

lugerholsterrepair 08-30-2002 10:53 AM

John, Heinz, Thank you both. And John, think again! I have made many mistakes! I have a pile of unuseable parts that I have screwed up and are no good. Disapointing when you put so many hours into a piece and have to throw it away. It does happen, even to the best of us! I bet if you talk to any of the craftsmen who do work that is hand made like Hugh or G.T. or Thor they have stories to tell of mistakes...Jerry Burney

John Sabato 08-30-2002 11:21 AM

Jerry,

You obviously missed the grinning face at the end of my statement about making mistakes

I have an Uncle that once told me that he had a lot of faults, but making mistakes isn't one of them

G.T. 08-30-2002 08:30 PM

An expert in anything, is someone who can fix his (and sometimes his best friends) screw ups!! I have tons of sawdust that went for naught!! I'm better now, only ruin about half!! Till...later...G.T. BTW, Jerry, I'm cutting the rings on your navy bottoms tomorrow!!!

lugerholsterrepair 08-31-2002 12:02 AM

John, Yes I know you were kidding!

G.T. Whoopee! Shouldn't be more than a coupla more months huh? Take your time my friend. I will be happy to get them whenever you get them ready. Thanks...Jerry

Yup! The temp in my garage is down to a comfortable 102% .... Perfect for wood working! Actually it has been pretty decent here and I been spending more & more time, evenings, working on some of these outstanding projects.... from Sept on, I should be good to go till spring! BTW I cut the rings last night! These are going to be neat! They are from a dark old, oil soaked, Mauser stock! All down hill from here! Till ....lat....GT

Ron Wood 09-01-2002 10:31 PM

Jerry,
You are really going to like these magazine bottoms...the wood looks terrific and the rings came out perfect! G.T. would probably be a lot further along but I dropped by his house on Saturday and imposed on his hospitality for over two hours. As you well know, I have this habit of dropping in on people whenever I go somewhere. Had a great time, G.T. and Carol are lovely people, but my visit halted any work that he was doing. Sorry!
