Lugers at Random and Shrunken heads
 

How much is a fair price for a copy of Lugers at Random by Charles Kenyon? I have a chance to get one, but considering my financial situation I dont want to overpay. Thanks an advance for any info. Also I have a shrunken head, appears to be real and is in an old plastic dome with brass base. Just thought I would mention it in case anyone is interested in pictures. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Two or three of the online Luger dealers also sell books, and often have copies of "LAR". Peruse those and you slhould come up with a good going price.

I was only wondering the value. I found one up for auction and I am the high bidder at $10. I just wanted to know how high I should go before letting someone else get it.

Hi Guys, The auction quickly went out of my price range, But it was fun while it lasted! I always feel bad when someone outbids me at the last second, but thats life and you have to move on. Mabey next time I will be the winner at the end!

I have since learned it is not actually HUMAN, but it is a reproduction done by the Shuar(Jivaro Indian Tribe) in Equador. It is made of some type of animal hide and molded using the same process as a real "Tsantsa". Here is a picture, Enjoy! http://forums.lugerforum.com/lfuploa...sfriend400.jpg

Actually Adam, I think Tacfoley's remarks were intended for Pete and his comments...who is probably LOL, and the imaginary parents of the "shrunken head" in your photo...

Sometimes the humor on this board is pretty dry... but stick around and you will catch on. Real Flames are not permitted on this board, and are dealt with swiftly... :)

Jerry, You are correct the LAR price should be $60 vise $50. $50 might be a fair price for a good used one. Adam, what did the used LAR finally fetch on ebay? I've seen several similar phony shrunken heads still being offered in novelity stores. The only real one that I've ever seen, belonged to a former neighbor of mine (now deceased) who was an Air Force officer assigned to the Ecquadorian government just before WW2 and was ask to get the shrunken WHITE head with red hair (formerly a German explorer) out of the country, before Hitler found out about it. Lugerdoc, The one I was bidding on is a first edition (1969)in near mint condition. It hasnt sold yet and is only at $26 . Here is the item number on ebay # 2224086746 . It is still going if anyone wants to bid. I cant go any higher on it because I am spending all my money on a Luger. G.T. gave me a sweet deal on it so the books can wait.

Adam, a little advice...if you can't afford $26 on reference books on Lugers, I would caution against ever spending more than $300 on a luger.

Adam, I second Georges advise in general. You are safe with buying from GT however. But do not let that experience lead you to think all Luger transactions will involve people as honest as GT or many others on this forum.

Hi Heinz! Thank you for the nice reference! I very much appreciate the kind words... and, I am in full agreement that you can't have enough books or knowledge in this game!! But I realize Adam's present situation and have made it possible for him to own a Luger that is a great shooter, and probably even collectible in some stables... inside of the budget he set forth in his first posting.... I am sure, if he pursues this hobby, even on a limited budget... he will most likely cross a few bridges, as have we all... But, his first experience with Lugers, this forum, and me, is going to be a good one, and I'm determined to make sure of that! I have his Luger ready to ship! George and Heinz, I respect your opinion and understand why I need the books.BUT, My point is some people, such as myself, are living on incomes that would be considered below the poverty line. Therefore it is nearly impossible to spend thousands on books, in order to be able to buy a few $400-500 pistols. As I have said before on this forum, My father and I both have to live on a combined income of about $9000,due to my partial disabilty and the fact we are farmers living in a place where farming is being pushed out by industrial buisnesses and such. I know most everyone on this forum is trying to be helpful, but some of the comments I receive are hurtful. I cannot change how or where I was raised or the condition I am in. I try to be happy with what I have and It is depressing to have people judge me based on my income and way of life. I do not mean to insult anyone on this forum and if I have I am sorry.

Adam, Man, you fellows in Tennesee must have something in your water that produces thin skin! Don't take anything said here as malicious unless it really is. These fellows are just welcoming you into the club. They feel comfortable enough to make a joke or two, it's not meant to be insulting to your income or your lifestyle. I think the advice about investing in some good luger references was/is well-intentioned.

Considering that not all Luger Forum members come from the same economic standing, the advice was given in hopes that a $ 20-30 book purchase on your part may prevent you from making a costly mistake in buying a luger from a stranger.

I will never probably own a $ 20K or $ 30K luger, but there is nothing preventing me knowing all I can about such expensive lugers and I jump at any/all chances to see such in person.

Even a $ 300-500 luger can be a "big buy"...depending on each person's situation.

Since you are getting a luger from one of the good guys on the Forum, you should be safe and happy with your first luger...one of the best bets is to buy lugers from your friends and other fellow collectors that you trust. Dealers and gun auction sites are also good...but have inherent risks and usually cost more.

I took similar advice from the good folks here and somewhere along the line got "hooked" not only on lugers but luger books. Can't get enough of each...

Jerry, G.T. is a great guy and I have seen pics of my new Luger already. It is great! I am sorry if I seem ill tempered the last two days. I have been under a lot of stress and have mabey over reacted to some replies, but I still want to stress the point to everyone that I have to be careful when choosing how to spend my money. (Jerry,This is in no way directed at you, I am just repeating it so everyone gets the point.) Some people on this forum seem to think that everyone has the same amount of income as them. I am not that lucky. I just want them to understand my income before telling me what I should buy, right after me telling them "I cant afford it". I have great respect for everyone here, 99% of these guys are intelligent, friendly, helpful people and I enjoy reading their posts and I mean no disrespect toward anyone.I was interested in buying "LAR" for a price far below what it is worth, just so I could have an interesting book to read. I wont be able to afford another luger for years so why buy the book for more than my budget will allow and miss out on a good luger now? If I were to pay $50+ for it, I would not be able to buy the Luger G.T. found for me. So the choice for me was simple, I trust G.T. and respect him for his honesty and his help, so I chose to continue the deal with him and forget the book. I know not to trust everyone who offers to help,but I had read many posts on this forum and knew I could trust G.T. and many other members. To me it is a better investment to have a one nice luger and no luger books, than 50 books about lugers and no Luger. Thats how I see it, I just dont care for people telling me how to spend my money when they cant understand how hard it is for me to make ends meet. (For anyone who is thinking" If he is that broke, why is he buying a Luger?" They need to read ALL my posts.) I will try to ease up a bit, but I would like to have people post comments that help me based on my financial situation not their own. Again, if this post offends anyone, I am sorry and I promise to be in a better mood soon. P.S. Jerry, there is something in the water! I am not sure what it is but its making my hair thin also!
