Mine too!
At least until 1968, I had a road runner that would "give" 130 mph or about 210 kph. |

One of many cars we're not allowed to have here in the US. Why drive gasoline when you can drive a Diesel? But our options are few...

Everytime its starting to look like diesel is going to take off here in the US, somebody comes along and screws it up. Thank you GM and thank you VW!

Diesels are dinosaurs, and the big rock is coming fast. European cities are quickly turning anti-diesel as they realize the polution problems they create.
They never really caught on in the US because road diesel fuel is much more heavily taxed than gasoline. If it had been a level playing field you'd see a lot more of them on the US roads. But now, it appears we dodged a bullet by not having a lot of them. Google European diesel problems and you'll see a flood of articles dealing with the issues. |
Most so-called "diesel problems" are political in nature - it would take diesel fuel being 2/3rds more expensive than gasoline for the "overall ownership cost" to be more-or-less equal to inefficient gasoline engines.

Caliphornia is down on diesel because it produces heavy exhaust particles that fall to the ground and are caught up in the watershed. Guess what powers a 900,000 pound 727 into the air? Jet fuel..just high grade diesel. They burn not gallons but thousands of pounds of the stuff. Guess what won't/will NEVER fly on electricity? a 900,000 pound 727. I would love to be a fly on the wall the day we run out of fossil fuel..it will be back to sailing ships.

It's veeeeeeery funny! Also because that's used to be one of my favourite cartoons when I was little. |

Every drop of petro-fuel should remain right were it is until/unless the techniques are developed to use it safely. The prices of denying the science, avoiding changes, or changing too slowly seem higher than many want to pay, but this is short-term thinking. |

Edit. We are going fast against a brick wall. I am well aware of that. |
Every drop of petro-fuel should remain right were it is until/unless the techniques are developed to use it safely. So...IF this were to be done..all human activity would come to an immediate grinding halt. How safe would that be?
What you are recommending is exactly what would happen if an EMP were detonated overhead. |

Don't take this personally, but that is just nuts; unless you want civilization as we know it to end quickly and in a big fight. JMHO. Changes can and should be made, but to stop using fossil fuels cold turkey(something that would be impossible to arrange/co-ordinate anyway) would kill millions directly and more millions indirectly, again JMHO. |
This and several processes like it are why oil( natural or synthetic) will never go away. I read years ago that one process is already in large scale production.
https://arpa-e.energy.gov/?q=slick-s...microorganisms http://www.exeter.ac.uk/news/researc...281715_en.html I understood the us military has been using bio engineered fuels for certain ocean based craft for some years as it meets their standards and as a solely domestic controlled asset it is secure in time of war. As a onetime chemist, we bring you better living! Jerry |
