I had this posted once before, but I think I deleted it as some members who shall remain nameless made fun of it...

What do you think would look best??? Shoot best???

What caliber - 9mm or 7.65mm???

I have a P1 breech stub left over from my reline projects and am thinking of re-barreling it long... :p

Rich, go for the 8 inch in 9mm!

Marc

Yeah, if you are going to do it, it might as well be eight inches! !

Curss 05-04-2015 05:40 PM

6 or 8! If you go 8, add an artillery sight of some sort!

I had a PhotoShop rendition of an 8" artillery P38 but I can't find it... :(

The P38/P1 eight inch artillery looks shorter than it actually is because 2 1/4" of the barrel is actually breech...Only 5 3/4" sticks out past the frame/slide...Where the Luger artillery sticks out ~7"...

I found it! :)

To make it mimic the artillery Luger, I'd have to add another 1 1/2" to the tapered section...making it actually 9 1/2" long...

The 7 or 8in bbl. should do nicely. I like the 30 Luger round, but 9mm would be o.k. also........I guess!!

The relines I've been doing were all 7.65mm so I've pretty much got the hang of it now... ;)

Edward Tinker 05-04-2015 07:11 PM

I like the 7 inch - and then put me down for one in 7.65 (or 9mm) as that would be cool :)

Ed

gotta do without the original rear sight. 3of them is to many

Ron Wood 05-04-2015 08:04 PM

Ditto. Deep six the arty rear sight. Yuck!

kzullick 05-04-2015 09:03 PM

I would go with the 7

sheepherder 05-04-2015 09:55 PM

Poll added...

Be wary of what you wish for...'Cool' can be expensive... :p

I agree with Ron, the Arty sight takes away from the overall looks, but I like the 8 in. barrel and maybe a Navy rear sight?

I'm with Ed and Ron...7" for a really distinctive result, .30 Luger (I know you can deal with the ammo situation!) for sweet shooting, and original rear sight (or maybe a faux-Navy concoction) for a monster sight radius/clean line. Arty sight does look a little goofy...

Problem in that is the P38/P1 rear sight is not solidly mounted to the slide; there's no dovetail etc. The sight is held in by the firing pin & indicator cover and has several firing pin thingies [with springs] under it. There's no practical way [in my opinion] to mount a micrometer sight in that slot. Not enough room behind it either, and the firing pin cover takes up the rest of the top of the slide. :(

It's either a barrel mount or the original sight. Sure, a faux adjustable sight or base could be fabbed to mount where the rear sight is (and still be held in by the firing pin cover) but it wouldn't be securely mounted. It would be 'loose' to some degree.

I vote for 7" , .30, and original rear sight.

Then call it a "Navy 30", JMO!

Only poll results will be counted. It's a close contest right now, between 6" and 7".

Ed hasn't voted either.

DonVoigt 05-10-2015 09:32 AM

Duh!

Voted this am, 7" is now ahead by a nose!
