WW1 Match book covers
 

I have been picking these up at shows the last year or so, picked up the bottom right one and the next one to it while at Gettysburg yesterday.

I have not seen this style? Have you guys?

I have collected and sold several of these over the years but have never seen one with the helmet. I like it! Bill

I too have never seen one like it.
I have a standard "Gott Mit Uns" cover, which my grandfather brought back from WW1. I lost it while on a hike my freshman year in college and miraculously found it on the trail my junior year in college!
The cover had weathered two Ohio winters without anybody spotting it and returned to my possesion in a million to one chance.
I have and treasure it today.

Over the years I have seen several with the Pickelhaube. A point of interest is that the Pickelhaube shown on the matchcover is of a municipal or civilian type Pickelhaube, not military. These match box protectors in brass were almost all made up after the war and sold to occupying American Doughboys. The German soldiers did carry similar items but the decoration is always of a different nature and the material is almost always steel

As George says, the Picklehaube cover will come up once in a while on ebay. I'm always looking for the odd ones, but often get out bid on them. I will find a good one now and then.

A few that are not seen too often, or rarely if ever. The one with the shield says Verdun on the banner.

Cool, I think Trench Art is a inexpensive part of the hobby that is under apprecaited!

I have one like you do Russ and Bill, I cropped russ' picture to show which ones sit by the couch :) My sister (nor I) smoke, but the ashtray and lighter is really cool ad she likes it.

I have one my grand dad brought back.
I had another from WW2.
It had a Russian star on the front and the edge was stamped "Russland Kursk"
with the 27th SS division insignia and date.
It was much thicker than the old ones and had been pebbled as well.
It got ripped off about 32 years ago.

Four of mine. One has a heavy artillery theme, another was given to either an artilleryman, cavalryman or Train trooper as it indicates a three year enlistment term. The brass protector is made of light metal and plated brass and nickel.

There are some pretty neat old commercial match safes out there too.

Here's one that I just won on ebay. I couldn't pass it up.

A very good friend of mine died of liver and stomach cancer about 18 months ago.

He was an artist in the highest sense of the word. He built custom muzzle loaders that sold for $3000 to $4000 each.

He had the best philosophy and sense of humor about life of anyone I have ever met. When he was diagnosed as terminal, he went out and bought a motorcycle and rode it every day until he was too weak to stand up.

When my time comes, I only hope that I can accept, and deal with it half as well as he did.

One of his favorite sayings was this quote from Rudyard Kipling.
