New Guy w/ Questions

Hey everyone! I have a few questions about lugers, due to the fact that I am new to this hobby... I would like to get a Luger to start my collection around this Christmas. My budget is pretty tight, so the maximum I could spend would be around $500. I am only 15. I actually became interested in the Luger because of a video game that had the pistol in it. I decided to look on the internet at prices and now I am addicted to them! I don't need any particular pistol; just one to have... I would like for it to fire, but I will take whatever I can get.

Welcome to the Lugerforum Zachary...

Lugers are an addiction for many... their engineering is superb and facsincating over 100 years after they were first designed...

Keep an eye on the gun auction sites... gunbroker and gunsamerica ... for a shooter in your price range... you can also list your wants and your budget in the want to buy forum on this site...

enjoy!

Hey Zachary,

I'm a new guy too, by comparison to the old timers here on the forum. I just got interested in Lugers and Broomhandles this year. I got my first Luger in April at the tender age of 58.

I have two sons of my own who got themselves strung out on video games, especially the 'first person shooter' type (that's where you shoot the first person you see and everyone after). It can sure be a struggle getting them away from games to do there homework. Still, my wife and I insist and it is paying off in there education. We have not discouraged their interest in firearms but we make sure it is kept in perspective. Our younger son has gone shooting with us a few times. The older one is away at school but hopes to join us on the range this summer.

Not to confuse the word 'addiction', which means a profound physical dependancy over which a person has lost control, and the idea of a 'habituation', a psycological dependancy which is really an issue of self control, my wife helps me control my urge to buy more guns.

You will not be able to legally buy a handgun until you are 21. If your parents decide to buy one for you to use they will need to be with you when you shoot it. They will be responsible for your handeling of it and access to it.

Study hard. Learn all you can. Get the best education you can. Chose a good career and you will be able to afford some very fine collectible Lugers someday. Also learn about firearms and their safe handeling. Always be very responsible with any weapon. Self control is extremely important here.

Hope you are having a great summer.

Can you own a handgun at 15

John Sabato 07-31-2006 10:55 AM

I am not sure of the age requirement on a private sale of a handgun inside the same state... it may be perfectly legal to sell a handgun to a minor (15) in the state of Georgia... Better check one of the law websites like the NRA or GOA...

John Sabato 07-31-2006 10:56 AM

Zach, you could also purchase a replica non-firing model of a Luger for less than $100 or even a pellet firing replica like Airsoft...

Parabellus 07-31-2006 05:20 PM

Oops.

My mistake. I had been under the impression that the laws governing handgun sales to minors were federal.
Kalifornia has very liberal (restrictive) laws indeed. If Georgia has greater freedom I may add that great state to my list of possible retirement options. The only time I spent there was five months in 1968 at Fort Gordon and Augusta.

Thanks for the correction, John.

In Virginia, the minimum age to own a handgun is 21 and the minimum age for a long gun is 18.

Each state's laws probably vary on the age restrictions.

Even at Walmart, the cashiers are supposed to ask whether a person is buying ammo for a handgun or a long arm. With my gray hair, they shouldn't ask any questions at all.

thegundude 08-01-2006 10:23 AM

Ken, that's what you get for buying anything at Mal*Wart... :D

I'm not certain, but I don't think that anyone under the age of 21 can buy a handgun in any state. At least that's what they told us in the CCW course...

But that doesn't mean that his parents can't buy it for him. I have a buddy that has buying guns for his kid since his wife got pregnant. Not sure if that's just his excuse to buy more guns but it works for him... :)

Here is where you can get the facts on the gun laws for any state:

http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/Default.aspx#

And here is the scoop on the state of Georgia and handgun ownership or possession by someone under the age of 18...

Quote:

It is unlawful to furnish a handgun to a person under 18 and it is unlawful for a person under 18 to possess a handgun. Under the following circumstances, a parent or legal guardian may furnish, and a minor may possess, a handgun: attending a hunter education or firearms safety course; engaging in practice or target shooting at an established shooting range authorized by the jurisdiction where it is located; engaging in organized competition or practicing for a performance by a group organized under 26 U.S.C. 501 (c)(3); lawful hunting or fishing with the permission of the land owner if, whenever the handgun is loaded, it is carried only in an open and fully exposed manner; traveling to and from the above activities if the handgun is not loaded1; or on real property under the control of the minor`s parent, legal guardian or grandparent with the permission of the minor`s parent or legal guardian to possess the handgun.

Yeah John, that's the way I remember it too... :)

Hi All,

In Michigan for a handgun, the age is 21 to purchase from an FFL , but 18 to purchase from a private owner. 18 year old must then have the handgun 'inspected' (registered) by local police agency - just like everybody else.
My nephew had to buy his first one that way, used VS new. Pretty strange eh?

Fritz.

thegundude 08-01-2006 05:16 PM

It has to be "inspected" (registered) by the local police?? Seriously??

Isn't that illegal? I thought registration was a big no-no for the gub'ment...

Dear freinds,

Not to belabor the obvious; as long as parents exercise control over their minor children and the dangerous items they are allowed to access; be they firearms, knives, or automobiles; let Zachary and other conscientious young'ns learn about them and their proper roll in a civilized society. Parents are the key, not the government. That said, with so many modern parents farming out their responsibilities to day-care, public schools, and other institutions of questionable quality, it is no wonder that we see so many young folks turning to criminal and otherwise stupid destructive behavior. The govenment will continue to enact further restrictions on firearms.
:soapbox:
Zachary, which video game has the Luger?

Ahhhhh!
One o' them young whippersnappers jest gitin' used t' bein' over 40.
Y'all git over it soon 'nuff.

Did you find Zachary a suitable Luger?

I think if he sticks around on the Forum he'll get much of the guidance he needs to become a savy collector. Who knows? Maybe if I live long enough I will too.

us "old" folks like video games too, I am a pretty good first shooter player, a bit too aggressive, and get shot too often, but what the hey. You may be 15 now, but buy some luger books, learn all you can, you'll be 18 before you know it. Zachary, send me an e-mail with your address.

Speaking of first shooter games, has anyone seen this kid?

Crazy German Kid

Parabellus 08-02-2006 12:28 AM

Yah. That's my kid.

Thatnks for all of the reply and help everyone! I hope to be able to get a luger sometime soon. If I were to have one, I'm sure my parents would own the gun in their name until I was of age... Until I get one I intend to just research on lugers and fing out more about them! By the way, the video game that has the luger in it is Call of Duty II on the XBOX 360.
