John,

How is your recovery going?
It's right to say that time heals all wounds, but probably it will take some more patience.
Come on, remember to keep a positive attitute!

Sergio

Right side Kitchenaid oven hinge. (Second Photo) The portion that enters the oven was spring loaded, and suddenly released while I was trying to get the left side reattached.

My hands were holding the portion of the hinges that are attached to each lower side of the door... the right hinge acted like a scissor trap when it released and pivoted 180 degrees nearly slicing my thumb off.

Nerves and tendons and one small artery were cut. You can see in the photo that from opening and closing, the edges of the hinge have sharpened themselves over the years.

The oven is about 5-6 years old.

Let's be careful out there!

only 3 tabs left... and that won't be enough for them... so they will hit the garbage disposal soon as I am sure I don't need them during PT.

Definitly a products liability injury claim..I'm serious 23 years worth!! I'm sure you not the only victim of Kitchen aides' faulty and dangerous unit or you could be the first!! I do suggest you seek proper qualified advice to discuss you and your families' alternatives...Eric

Thanks Eric... My attorney is already looking into the possibility of prior claims on this model oven...:order:

This will likely be the last photo update... managed to catch a clear focus shot while redressing the wounds over the weekend... The slice at the base of the thumb is the work of the oven hinge... The other places are the cuts made by the surgeon for the repair work...

I still don't have *much* feeling in the thumb... and not able to see any movement of the top knuckle when I try to bend it... but the physical therapist says that it will all return if I do the exercises that have been prescribed... not a hundred percent, but at least a liveable result...

Thanks again to all of you for all your thoughts, encouragements, and prayers, they are appreciated more than you know...

Keep healing and we'll keep praying!

Goodness Gracious, John!!! It looks like a Pizza cutter! Or some nasty homemade thing from a prison shakedown. I cringe just looking at it.

Heal well, and quickly,

Gunny John

Okay... this IS the last photo update...

The external physical healing is about complete... but overcoming the underlying scar tissue to allow movement, and physical therapy will be ongoing for months yet... only a couple of degrees of movement of my thumb's top knuckle, compared to about 30 degrees of movement on the other hand. I still have a long row to hoe...

Thanks for hanging in there with me guys...

...and please don't try this at home... This is the result of an amateur on a closed course... imagine how bad it would be if a professional had been injured! :D
