I am beginning to wonder if your magazine button latch is worn from use and causes all the loaded magazines to sit slightly "low" in the receiver. I recommend that you try shooting with the bottom of the grip resting in your "off" hand and press up on the mag to see if reliability improves. If it does, then I recommend replacing the mag release button.

I'll give it a try!

Hi,

I've often wondered whether the designers meant for the magazines to sit down those extra couple of millimeters, or whether the buttons or the magazines themselves have worn down from usage.

Most of the Lugers I've examined have magazines that sit down those extra couple of millimeters. Strangely, the hold open devices of these Lugers still operate just fine.

No luck so far.

Chris,
there are more and more questions comming up.
Take your pistol, go to a safe place, load the magazine, put it into the grip and try to operate the toggle manually without firing. Does your pistol properly throw out the cartridge from the barrel and does it properly feed another one from the magazine ?
Be very careful, Armin.

With the original mainspring and striker spring being used, yes.

Armin 03-11-2014 12:26 PM

Chris,
do you mean that with a new spring the system does not work properly when operated manually and with the old spring it did ?
If the answer were 'yes', then some slight skepticism would come up since the main spring does not play a big role when operating the toggle manually as long as it is strong enough to shut the system.

I just ran the same test with the new 38 pound spring and extra power striker spring and it seems to function when the toggles are manually operated. The 38 pound spring worked better then the other springs during live fire as well. I have not tried to manually operate the 36 or 40 pound springs.

I apologize for the delay in response, I had just shut the gun room down! :D

I have given the gun a thorough cleaning and reinstalled the original springs. Tomorrow will hopefully yield some better results.
