Yes brad they seem to be cast with the exact same die as the rest of the gun. I wish there was someone near Nashville TN I could take it to show. Once you have it in your hand it is to original looking not to be original, everything matches perfectly. I just can't wrap my head around someone puting in all the time and effort back in the 40's to make something so perfect and sound and real looking without making something that looks like the others. One thing I have learned is that ther are so many odd types of lugers I need to get this into hands much more skilled then mine to find the truth about this gun.

Mike, Where is the serial # located? Under the barrel? There are many nuances with German numbers. Unless a thorough side by side inspection of number types is made they can sometimes go un noticed and look alike when they are not.

Is there rifeling in the barrel?

Is the muzzle crowned?

Have you been able to determine if a 9MM cartridge will chamber?

Will one extract after being chambered?

LETS BE CAREFUL......if there is no rifeling in the barrel this could be a real problem.....

I don't have 9mm ammo I only have .45 .40 .38 that I use with other guns and I don't know where to take it here...
There is rifeling in the barrel when the chamber is locked open and I run light through it is very visable 6 raised lined twisting the lenght of the barrel.

I don't think the muzzle is crowned but attached is a pic i might be wrong.

I can go to walmart and get some ammo for this but I don't want to waist $$$ for nothing. Should I take it to the gunshop, can they help me get the caliber right?

It is a 9mm I got it looked at...

I have seen other guns like this used as a "line thrower"

But I dought that is the case here since you don't need a rifled barrel for that.

To answer the rifling question, a smooth barrelled pistol MUST be registered as an AOW under the provisions of the National rirefarms act of 1934. This is the same type of registry a short barrelled shotgun or similar would require.
