An idea like this came up on another forum and there was a lot of bitching from certain quarters. Hard to figure why since it was entirely voluntary. Guess the crowd here is not as cranky.

It is like a platoon in the army. You have a couple of troops who complain (might be the squad leaders, might be the M249 gunner) and pretty soon, everyone is raising hell.

But if folks want to raise heck about supporting the site, they can go elsewhere! :D Not very Christmtssy I know, so lets say it this way, they can ho, ho, ho to another site :D

How do we keep track of who's paid for how many tickets and who does the drawing?

Here at raffles everyone gets a movie type ticket and they are put into a drum and one drawn.

That would involve a physical exchange so that might not work.

Anyone with any ideas is welcome to jump in here.

Someone needs to run it as well. Any volunteers

One other thing...It might be necessary for some of us to Email our friends who may be members but not log on every day. We all have a database of these and get it rolling. Create a little buzz for a good cause.

Also put a beginning and ending date.

You collect the paypal or physical envelopes, and buy a roll of tickets or make them, and then assign one or each person that buys one, "their" number as they come in.

I would imagine the "raffle" would go through January or mid-January.

And to make it easy, Ted gets reimbursed for shipping back, and he should get at least something for his time or a percentage of "normal" amount or not <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ...

I,m not a computer whiz, but would there be a way to post a list of each entrants number on the forum information site , or the side bar where the galleries ,etc are?. Set up like a lottery board. That way everybodies number(s) are common knowledge. Just a thought.

Ed, I would be happy to do it except here in Yuma I have a really slow land line connection. I will have to ask Ellie if she thinks that would hamper collecting Pay Pal ticket sales....If she says it will be OK I would do it.

I can get a roll of movie tickets here with numbers on both tickets, let members who bought a ticket know their number and put the other in a drum.

I am completely behind the Thor restoration raffle idea and would like to participate. I have an example of Ted's work and can attest to the fine quality. However, I think that $10. ain't near enough for a shot at a $600. Thor miracle. I suggest raising the raffle price to $20. and capping the number of tickets (perhaps 60 to 90), to make the odds worth paying for and to ensure full participation. I agree that the offer should absolutely not include shipping (or any extra work by Ted), and that Ted should be compensated for his work in some manner. KFS

Karl, I agree wholeheartedly...There has to be some sort of limit. Time limit too. The time limit would shorten considerably if the max of say 100 tickest were collected in a week or two. 100 seems like a reasonable figure to give john a reasonable return on his contribution and still take care of Ted. Either 10 or 20 bucks seems good. More would participate at 10 but 20 wouldn't be a deal killer either.

1. If payent by paypal is used to buy the tickets, it must be remembered that paypal charges a fee, which should be factored into the equation.

2. Who is the money going to be sent to?

3. Who is going to draw the winning ticket? This may not be true in this instance, but I have seen instances when there is concern that the drawing was not on the level. (I only mention this so as to bring the issue to the fore for consideration.)

The paypal fee runs about 4 percent... just the cost of doing business with them. One advantage is that every time money is received, a unique transaction number about 16 digits long is generated. These could be used for the drawing numbers if John D. can strip them out of the paypal messages and post them...

Since the restoration being offered is actually the property of John D., I have no problem letting him be the recipient of the money... his generosity and honesty is above reproach...

As a suggestion for the selection of the winning number, I propose that the winning number be based on some public information over which no one in the forum has any control. From my youth, in South Philadelphia, I remember that "playing the numbers" that was run by organized crime, was based on information like certain digits of stock quotations on nationally known stocks... The only question I have for the membership is what info that randomly changes daily and is published publicly on the web could be used as the basis for the winning number, and how would the randomly generated transaction numbers by Paypal be associated with that number source so there is a clear winner and not a bunch of them? One of you members with more time than I have could figure how that relationship might work and then post it here...

If you cap the raffle at 100 tix, you could assign a two digit number to the buyer in the order tix were purchased (00-99). After all 100 are sold, wait 7 days after #99 was sold, then just pick a State's daily 3 digit lottery number and match the last two digits.

If you use New York's, you'll have to specify the midday or evening number. We have so many gamblers here, the "daily number" is actually "semi-daily".

I think that would be about as random as could be expected. I'd go in for one. I'd vote for $20, it will be a lot of administration/capitalization for a paltry 1G.

Adding the Paypal transaction number would be a problem since they are alphanumeric...

Jack's idea about using the digits of a state lottery on a particular day is a good one in my mind...

I guess the main question is...Who is going to administer the thing? I am willing to send in my 20 bucks as soon as it's worked out. I think it would take just a short time to get 100 entrants once it's started. Heck, at 20 bucks a ticket, even 50 entrants would be adequate.

We need someone to keep track of it all. I agree the money could go to John since he's going to get the lions share anyway.

I still say Ted should be considered as I know the guy is generous to a fault but not a ri$h man.

Make 100 pieces of the same paper, raffle them, charge $11 or $21 to cover paypal, send the money to John and Ted and be done with it.

Just do it and be happy. Heck, there are 2 or 3 members in the Denver area, they can draw from a hat or something, or I'll ask the company Priest to do it (advantage of working at a Catholic Owned facility)...
