I lived in DC for three years. Definately not a quality place to live. I liked it best in my rear view mirror as I left.

Puretexan 09-07-2017 06:53 PM

Everywhere has its pitfalls at sometime of the year. The best place to live is where your
family and friends live.

cirelaw 09-07-2017 10:46 PM

Hurricanes suck!!!!! There is mandatory evacuation closer to the coast, but where? The hurricane is heading north on I-95. Sitting ducks with thousands of cars going no where! We have gas, generators and all my luger goodies are gorilla taped shut in 3 blue tupperware blue boxs, Besides lugers are holsters, artillery and navy boards, rare ammo drum, loader etc. For some like myself this is my luger IRA. They say another one is right behind! God Bless you all for you kind thoughts and prayers. Debby is my God sent! TKS for now!

Well, if you take a glance at the thermometer, you will find the temp reads the same at -42 degrees C or F. Anything past about 30 below (farenheit) is just cold. A lot of stuff will just start failing at about -45. Except the woodstove. It always works, so long as you feed it.

DC was built in a swamp, they do have floods. It is hot and humid in the summer, and in winter they have snow- but it only shuts down the govt. so it is not all bad!:D

Trouble? They have Congress and the Bureaucracy- more trouble they don't need!:crying:

I did, in 1970-71. I worked at a funeral home on Wilson Blvd. in Arlington, across the street from Sears. (I think it is a subway stop now.) The big snow that winter was about 2-3." My tracks were the only ones on the way to work! Being raised in Northern NY was good practice for snow and cold.

+1 on the trouble there.

Eric and family, you are always in our thoughts and prayers on these days.

Eugen 09-08-2017 06:08 AM

Eric, Debbie and you are in our prayers. You appear to be very well prepared. God bless!

Lived in DC for 54 years. Winters are too cold, experienced a few
2 foot snows. Then it warms up just enough to turn it all to ice.
I recall 2 weeks when you could cross the frozen river to VA. on foot. Heat and humidity in the summer rivals any southern city with the added joy that there is often no air movement at all. Only thing I deal with here is heat, and with almost no humidity and an ever present breeze it's not bad at all. Sure beats what my wife's siblings are dealing with in Houston.

George Anderson 09-08-2017 04:29 PM

I was born in Washington, DC but was brought to Virginia at the age of three days. Although I now live within a hundred miles of the place, I never go into that swamp.

conniie 09-08-2017 05:41 PM

Thank God for Rubbermade and Gorilla tape. We feel blessed! I'll give you update until We lose power! Everybody heading north is insane!!

Gee Eric, what did I ever do to you. Sarasota is a beautiful city.

You should be feeling sorry for us!! :)

We've battened down the hatches and are staying put for the duration.

George Anderson 09-09-2017 12:12 PM

Good luck John.

cirelaw 09-09-2017 12:26 PM

John, I meant no harm! Yes I've have friends on the west coast. I wish them the best! All our state is going to get our butts kicked! I mearly made the comment that we are no longer in the deadly cone. The problem is that our east coast had a few more days to prepare! The problem is where does it go from there??? Maybe it will keep a westerly track into the gulf!!!! This year really suggs! http://abc11.com/weather/irma-latest...orida/2364973/

Eric,

Not to worry! I was just kidding.

Sadly our entire state is going to be impacted by Irma. Just so happens that this time the area between Fort Myers, Sarasota and Tampa are going to bear the brunt of it.

Last time we had any action here was in 2004 when Sarasota was bracketed by 4 hurricanes but never hit. But we survived that and we will survive this one.

Yesterday was spent reinforcing the boat moorings and securing everything outside the house.

Today, we're rigging the inside the house for hurricane action. Getting out the propane stove, making sure emergency equipment is in good working order, etc. And, getting our "go bags" ready in case we decide to bail out and go to a shelter or go bunk in with friends who live further from the shore line..

Good luck to all Floridians. We need it.

John

The worse are the tide surges 10ft! Before Andrew was our strongest hitting south of Miami in Homestead. This one is way larger. Its going to bankruct some insurance companys I bet! Update at 8pm

RShaw 09-09-2017 06:00 PM

Thank you!! Of course, you and your family and friends in the area, your home, (and Luger collection) take priority...

One suggestion, At Night with shutters walk around with a light of some sort. It gets really dark and you don't want to fall a break a leg!! You are on your own and that suggs!

Wishing every one down there the best.

Eric

My prayers are for you your family and all the other Luger mates living in those areas.

Stay dry and break a leg!

cirelaw 09-10-2017 09:30 AM

I really love you folks. We picked up 'Little Marie' and 85 Italian Granny who lives alone, I got kicked out of our bed for the couch and they both slept soundly! Can't imagine allowing a grandma being alone during such hell!

cirelaw 09-10-2017 10:18 AM

Just an observation~ A know everything neighbor was braging that he spent 5k on hurricane proof windows instead of hurricane shutters! One flying object will dispel that myth!!

cirelaw 09-10-2017 10:18 PM

All is well and have electricity! We are leaving our storm shutter up until December!!!

sheepherder 09-10-2017 10:18 PM

Eric, the Weather Channel is reporting another tropical storm - Jose - coming across the Atlantic right behind Irma. :(

cirelaw 09-10-2017 10:24 PM

Thank You, Thats why we are leaving the storm shutters up and leave the goodies packed tight!! What next? An Earthquake!! We need another hurricane like a third armpit!!!!!!!!!!!!!
