Order more, shipping will be not much more, as only one "haz mat" fee to be added.:o

shipping was more than double on 500 rounds , 45.00 I passed on it , there was no savings

According to recent experience, that's in the usual ballpark. I had about 20 pounds of ammo shipped from an auction house for around the same. One bad one was over $21 for shipping a single box of 50 Norma .30 Luger rounds to me, which I had won for under $20. They claimed it was what Fed-Ex had charged them--inflated, they said, because they'd called it ammo to the shipper, who tacked on a surcharge. This, in comparison to another house that charged $5 for sending two boxes.

I remember a post that detailed somewhat the comparisons among all the shippers, does anyone remember where it might be?

Also, has anyone used DHL for shipping/receiving anything?

There is no hazmat fee on loaded ammo, only on primers and bulk powder. As a handloader, I order quite a lot of handloading components, and occasionally loaded ammo. That has been my experience to date.

David,

I received a package from DHL recently, but for the life of me, I can't remember if it was ammo/handloading components/etc. Sorry. I did have to sign for it, so likely ammo related.

yes, samco lost a chance at a double order due to the shipping , might as well see how this first batch runs and see if I will order more , was no savings on shipping at all.

How about extra charges levied by the big shippers?

The reason I asked wad that the man in Germany who is shipping me some parts offered it as an option. Since I've no experience with DHL, I Googled "DHL reviews" and was impressed by their terrible reviews. Check it out, if you're short on amusement sometime.

Yes, about a year or so ago I ordered a WW II rifle part from Latvia (it was advertised/auctioned on GB) and they shipped it by DHL. I tracked it across Northern Europe to Germany and then on to NYC and then Chicago. It stopped there for about three weeks, and I finally got through to the DHL rep who told me that it was last scanned individually in Germany, and from then on only the container was scanned. So I had been following the container, not the parcel. The parcel never showed up. I notified the seller, who contacted DHL and that was when I found out about the container scanning. So, my parcel disappeared in Germany before being containerized. :(

The seller shipped another part after getting verification from DHL that it was lost, so I was only disadvantaged by a month or so of waiting. But I would never consciously select DHL for my shipping. In my case, the seller used DHL and I had no vote in the shipper selection. :grr:

Some years ago, I ordered a used/stripped M16 rifle barrel from Northridge out in California; the box arrived with a neat ~1" hole in the end and no barrel. That was by UPS; again a wait for verification and another shipment. The second time, there was a similar hole but someone in transit had taped it up [sloppily] with clear tape. But I got that barrel.

In both cases, before the sellers shipped a replacement, I had requested the shipping reps to query the stops of the shipment en route to me to see if it had fallen out and been retrieved but not identified. In both case I was told it was not possible. :soapbox:

Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances... :(

Not sure that I have an answer for that. In the ammo world, complete cartridges only require an Ordnance Sticker(ORD) that one can copy from the internet and apply to the loaded ammo being shipped. USPS will not(I think that I am correct) ship loaded cartridges, but UPS and FedEx will. As to the reloading components, bullets(projectiles) require nothing special, and USPS will ship them, as well as other shippers. The primers, and bulk powder(explosives) require special packing, hazmat stickers, and the shippers charge a "hazmat fee". Whether the shippers actually pay the shipping company a fee or not to ship these items, I can not say. I believe that only a certain poundage of hazmat items are allowed on each truck hauling said products.
USPS will not handle these items, they treat them just like handguns.

That pretty well exhausts my limited knowledge concerning shipping these items, and fees for said items.

as for as I know , you are correct . I buy bulk ammo and it usualy includes free shipping and all the shipmnts arrive with ord labels and not hazmat labels

Interesting... All the reviews for DHL were one star--presumably because one could not register a lower vote. Stories about horrendous waits, repeated lies about an item's being on a truck for delivery, lost delivery details, lies about an item's being delivered, lost items. I'm surprised that they have any business at all, but options for shipping here may be limited for European senders.
