John,
I repeat, OUCH!!! Get better soon! Mike:crying: |
First therapy session this afternoon... can't wait to get the cast off!:eek:
|
Your thumb looks fine. When are they removing your stiches, real fun..not!! ps get them to use the freeze spray! I had to have 37 removed triple ouch!
|
But what we can't see in the photos Eric, is the condition of the tendons, nerves and arteries that have been repaired... if the work has not been successful, my fine looking thumb will be pretty useless. I will find out tonight...
|
That I forgot...Its a good thing this didn't happen years ago~~~ All the best!!!!!!!
|
Wish you a speedy recovery!
|
John, If you had sent me that hand I would have stitched it right up! Probably a lot cheaper too! Then the stitches would have just fallen out after 100 years.
Glad you have it fixed. I type by the hunt & peck method and don't use my thumb much for typing. |
Spring loaded oven door?
We never know what's gonna bite us. Sorta reminds me of the time, a few years ago, when I was up on a ladder painting the barn and stepped back to admire my work. Got me four months in a wheel chair and now Pat won't let me get up on a ladder to even change a light bulb. (Silver lining in every cloud?) Maybe you won't be allowed to get near an oven... Mend well, John, All the best, Gunny John |

John,
Prayer works!!! Sieger |

Good luck on the recovery. You never know when things will bite you! A couple of weeks ago,I learned to never try to fix a music box with out eye protection. Box was jammed, with the spring wound tight. I loosened the wrong gear. Cylinder spun freely, metal tines everywhere,Including my eye. Ouch! No permanent damage,Thank Goodness. Bob |
John how are you doing?? Progress Report Please!!

Surgery is considered successful, but the use of my hand? Only time will tell...
Must wear a removable cast all the time for at least 2 months. Professional Physical Therapy two times a week, and every day I have to manually exercise the damaged hand with assist from the good side... every two hours to keep the damaged tendons flexible during the healing process. Repair surgery left two new incisions to heal (see photo---sorry the photo is fuzzy... cell phone pic taken with my shakey left hand...) Pain meds have been reduced from Oxycodone to Advil... good thing... the old one made me sleepy and feeling stupid... Pain for the time being is constant, but manageable. ;) Learning to do things left-handed? Not so great. :crying: thanks for asking... |
John your spirits seem great. Good thing your off Oxeees. Probobly as additting as morphine. It took me 8 months to learn to walk unassisted. Debbie wouldn't marry me until I could walk her down the isle. Seriosly my left side was droopy and I couldn't grip my left hand but did come back. God answered our prayers and I'm back maybe 90 to 95 percent. They say 'time heals all wounds but should be you heal your own wombs! Your attitude is wonderful as is your future! Keep on gripping!!~~Eric
|
Prayers are on the way, hope you get well soon ;-)
|
Keep the positive attitude, John! Work slowly and steadily to regain your dexterity.
Prayers always sent your way. |
Once that cast is completely off, I bet it will be difficult to resist the impulse to shake hands...
Glad the healing is coming along and the swelling is reducing. When I had my surgery this year, they gave me Morphine (with the timed pushbutton). That stuff really works, but does a number on you. Eventually NSAIDS proved effective and enough. Glad you got off the strong stuff... Marc |
Hang in there my friend. Bill
|
John, when you can, please explain what happened...i have spring hinged ovens and have no idea what to watch out for...
BTW, do you have any Oxycodone left over ?? I have several drug dealers locked-up over at the jail and they are running low......:D |
John,
How is your recovery going? It's right to say that time heals all wounds, but probably it will take some more patience. Come on, remember to keep a positive attitute! Sergio |

Right side Kitchenaid oven hinge. (Second Photo) The portion that enters the oven was spring loaded, and suddenly released while I was trying to get the left side reattached.
My hands were holding the portion of the hinges that are attached to each lower side of the door... the right hinge acted like a scissor trap when it released and pivoted 180 degrees nearly slicing my thumb off. Nerves and tendons and one small artery were cut. You can see in the photo that from opening and closing, the edges of the hinge have sharpened themselves over the years. The oven is about 5-6 years old. Let's be careful out there! |

Definitly a products liability injury claim..I'm serious 23 years worth!! I'm sure you not the only victim of Kitchen aides' faulty and dangerous unit or you could be the first!! I do suggest you seek proper qualified advice to discuss you and your families' alternatives...Eric
|
Thanks Eric... My attorney is already looking into the possibility of prior claims on this model oven...:order:
|
I'm sure your in good hands. Don't let them blame you. God Bless! We are all behind you and your family~~~
|
Geez, John, you give me the chills every time you post something related to your injury.
I just can't imagine. |

This will likely be the last photo update... managed to catch a clear focus shot while redressing the wounds over the weekend... The slice at the base of the thumb is the work of the oven hinge... The other places are the cuts made by the surgeon for the repair work...
I still don't have *much* feeling in the thumb... and not able to see any movement of the top knuckle when I try to bend it... but the physical therapist says that it will all return if I do the exercises that have been prescribed... not a hundred percent, but at least a liveable result... Thanks again to all of you for all your thoughts, encouragements, and prayers, they are appreciated more than you know... |
Keep healing and we'll keep praying!

Okay... this IS the last photo update...
The external physical healing is about complete... but overcoming the underlying scar tissue to allow movement, and physical therapy will be ongoing for months yet... only a couple of degrees of movement of my thumb's top knuckle, compared to about 30 degrees of movement on the other hand. I still have a long row to hoe... Thanks for hanging in there with me guys... ...and please don't try this at home... This is the result of an amateur on a closed course... imagine how bad it would be if a professional had been injured! :D  |
Keep On Healing!!
We will keep you in our Prayers! Eric & Debby
|
John , I just saw this thread... prayers said for your recovery.
