Second year at Purdue
|
1960 was the year I immigrated to this country from England. I visited the US consulate in London, had my fingerprints taken, and signed a document swearing that I did not intend to overthrow the US government or commit adultery. When I became a citizen a few years later, I again had to swear that I did not intend to commit adultery. It's nice to know that our border security doesn't just let anybody in. Regards, Norm

Just found this post! I graduated college in 1960. My first car was this bright red 1940 Ford convertable that I drove in college:

Hmmm......until February 28th, I wasn't anywhere!

Boy, I didn't realize we had so many old timers here :) , makes me feel young....I was only 3 in 1960...I don't think I had much interest in guns or cars at that time...most likely Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans occupied my time.
Did Mr. Green Jeans really have green jeans ? I wouldn't know because we only had a B/W TV back then. Jim |

I owned 4 of the big Healeys back in the 70's...3 100/6's (like the one in the pic) and 1 3000...Had one set up for SCCA Class E in 1975; made it to the drivers school at Watkins Glen, lost oil pressure during the familiarization lap...Didn't have enough money to rebuild the engine AND race it, so traded it for a Yamaha DT1-B flat track motorcycle...Raced that for two years before admitting I would never be a winner... :D The big Healeys were fun...Weak pressed sheet steel frames, though - rusted out pretty quick...The last one I owned, I fabricated a new frame for and put a Datsun 240Z engine & trans into...Plus TR6 steering & brakes... :) |
My Dad had a 1960 MG A which was a rare car around Mexico City at that time. As kids, we used to love to sit in the passenger seat and hide under the tarp that would cover the entire car's interior with an opening for the driver only, which could be zipped shut.
I remember being stunned upon coming out one morning after an earthquake and seeing that most of the stucco lining of our carport's concrete ceiling had come down on the MG. I thought it had destroyed the car, but my Dad swept it all off, jumped in the car and headed for the office. It needed only buffing and polishing to bring it back to almost new again. |
Oh boy, I'm a child here...
I asn't anywhere until... 14 years later. |

Just about ready to come down my mother's fallopian tube (at least the egg part of me) and the rest of my DNA was still waiting for it's chance in my father to make its attack!

At 18 1/2 years of age, I joined the U.S. Air Force on 2/25/60 and spent 3 1/2 years in missile maintenance. The last two in Germany, at Hahn Air Base. At 21 years of age, I had a 7 man crew and was crew chief for 10 nuclear missiles all set up to say hello to Mr. Khrushev.

Ron, you remember me Paul Le Mat character in American Grafitti movie... May I ask you what was playing in your AM radio? I love music from the 50s and 60s (as seriously as Lugers). Douglas |

I loved Captain Kangaroo. My grandmother was close friends with Bob, or Mr. Captain Kangaroo.....I remember meeting him a few times when I was kid. Same with Fred Rogers, also a family friend. |

My all time favorite was soupy sales was always driving the censors crazy!

Remember that time he told all the kids watching to go into Daddy's wallet, take out all the money and send it to him?? He even gave the kids time to go find a pencil so they could write down his address, which he flashed on the screen?
If I recall, there was a bit of a Bruhaha over that one! |
The worse when he was teaching the alphabet. Soupy had cards with different letter. White fang got stuck on the letter 'Y' He asked white fang How come every time I hold up a '"F'' you see "K"??

I still have every word of that silly theme song in my head to this day. Not only the opening theme, but the closing theme of the show.

Otherwise, I spent my days in Mrs. Muldoon's fifth grade classroom. She's the one who killed a little milk snake I'd brought in, in a ventilated jar. Without asking, she'd put the critter's jar on the windowsill in direct light, thinking this a kindness to the animal. Unable to regulate its body temp, the little guy was cooked by dismissal time. This may also have been in the era when reproduction Lugers were advertised on the backs of comic books...That's when I fell in love with the P.08. I believe I also had my Johnny Reb Cannon then. The balls all were lost, over time, but I found it would do just fine with billiard balls I drilled out to fit the guide tube in the center of the "bore". It lasted until about 1999, when it was destroyed by ice falling from the eaves. DP |
I think Red's cowboy character was Clyde Cadiddlehopper (SP).
|
Clem caddidlehopper was Red's bumpkin country cousin.
I theink the cowboy was Texas Red, but not sure. There is an interesting book by the son of a Howdy Doody producer who saw lots of the behind the scenes goings on. CRS on the name right now. One guy seduced moms upstairs during the shows and the princess was an ex-stripper with a past. She was in Jail House Rock and was headed for better things when she died in a car wreck. |
I now reaze the roots of my aberant behavior!

Yes I living with my Grandparents in Florida with only 4 channels. They loved The man with the chop stick. He was on Sundays between Bonanza and Walt Disney, At least Ed Sullivan had the Beatles. I try unscrewing the cable and turn down the volume hoping they might fall asleep. My German Grandma got a chop stick and joined in. She wanted an accordian. Gramps left her alone with a few chopstick hoping to difuse the obsession! And that started my councelling. Next came the nuns. Should I say more! Happiness to all!

My favorite show of the 50's was "Science Fiction Theater"...I still recall an episode where a mysterious stranger stayed overnight at a remote home...Mother & son had no electricity...Stranger told wild stories about a strange land...and left behind a suitcase with a duplex receptacle that the kid plugged his electric train set into... Really...Would an alien with a cold fusion reactor put a *duplex* receptacle in his suitcase??? :D |
I think Red's cowboy was "San Fernando Red." Sound about right? And the boxer was "Cauliflower McPugg." ("There goes a whole flock of 'em!") And "Freddy the Freeloader" was in there somewheres.
Just too D--- old! John C. |
