Norme, would you please stay on topic and not ruin ANOTHER of my threads. I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Harry

Not to be rude Harry. I appreciate Normes input, yours also. Looking over a few posts from you and you pal kitkat, you are quite prone to taking over posts as well. Smile, we love you.

Fair enough, but I'm just an old redneck, I try not to hi-jack a thread, just respond when attacked, that's my excuse and George, well he is just George, someone you would like as a friend as long as you are not a liberal.......

Have you noticed anything peculiar about sub MG's that fire from an open bolt??? I've fired several, at military FamFire exercises, and was quite surprised...I mentioned it in another thread; when you next visit this friend, fire an MP-40 or Thompson unsupported and tell us/me what you noticed... :)

Douglas Jr. 06-28-2011 06:00 PM

That's an very impressive collection.
However, as a personal preference, I would stick on pre-1945 models only.

Douglas.

I've put a few rounds downrange with both open and closed bolt subguns. Not sure what answer wins the prize today but far and away the open bolt guns are less accurate than their closed bolt counterparts and somewhat more awkward to sight in and fire. Of course with all of the things mechanical going on, and all of the moving parts slapping around and smacking into battery before the bullet starts its way down the barrel, kind of stands to reason that the open bolt design is inherently less accurate.

I would have also said they generally have slower rates of fire Like the Thompson and M3 but the MAC 10's spit out a goodly number of rounds per minute. Then there is the crudeness factor but the Tommygun is exquisitely built.

Regards,
Doug

The Thompson is the only bullet hose I ever wanted to own...perhaps someday I'll get around to it.

And still fairly affordable, by SMG standards, thanks to the thousands produced by Auto Ordnance from the sixties through the mid 80s.
Now if you want to own a Colt or Savage........

hmmmmm, Washington STATE is not on the list and it is NOT a high crime area, nor is it full of liberals. Seattle is about 220 miles from where my parents live and 300 miles from where I lived near the Idaho border. I wish every thread, especially a fascinating one like this could stay away from political comments?

I shot one for the first time a couple of summers ago. It was as much fun as I imagined :)

Also shot a Reising (loved it), but my favorite was surprisingly the MP18, it shot whatever I point it towards. Great fun!

I have a M1941 Johnson semi-auto rifle, a rare gun and I love it. Now I would like to have a Johnson LMG(second picture), rarer still. Anybody with one for sale? Johnson made some prototypes of the gun in the third picture, but I can't find out if they ever went into production, so I doubt it.

There was a guy at the Tulsa gun show in April wearing a Johnson T-shirt and he had a M1941 Johnson rifle, like mine for sale. We chatted for a minute and then I told him I would like to have a Johnson LMG, he got in my face and told me I wasting my time, they never went into production, he's the "expert" I guess, after all he has the T-shirt to prove it. I hope I can find him again at the November Tulsa show, I will gladly relieve him of a hundred bucks. The neat picture from 1942 are paramarines, cool caps !

Ron,

You really should try an MP40. You are getting to an age..it would be difficult to hold up a Thompson...

If I had Jerry Burney's money, you can bet I would have this FG42 in my safe, it's for sale on Gunbroker. What a piece of eye candy. There are a lot more pictures on GunBroker, if interested.

Here:
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=233213227

Text discribing the gun, just so you will know, $130,000 didn't hit the reserve.

I am listing this FG42 for a friend. This is a near perfect example of a second model FG. Numbers matching. I have test fired this weapon and it shoots perfectly. This is an original C&R gun. The scope and mount are original to the gun. The GI who brought this gun home lightly marked the selector positions above the grip. When you are not familiar with one of these guns ( like he was) it was the smart thing to do at the time. It could be easily removed but it would loose some of its history. I will not give the reserve price to anyone to keep things fair. Buyer to pay actual shipping and insurance. Terms are 50% down and 50% after the transfer is aproved by ATF. This gun is on a form 3 and ready to transfer.

It's an MG 08, Harry, the standard German heavy MG through WW1 and on until the early 40's. If you're wondering what to get me for my Birthday (coming up in a few weeks, by the way), one of these would look very nice in my den. Regards, Norm

A sub gun I had the pleasure of shooting awhile back was a Beretta Model 12. Which I notice was hanging on the wall of your friends collection.
Yes,I know it is not WW2,but it sure is a sweet handling sub gun.Shoots from a open bolt, but is very accurate and controllable. So much nicer then those slam fire MAC guns I used to mess about with.

That would be Sport System Dittrich, which makes reasonably priced semi replicas of a number of Third Reich weapons. The problem is our ATF regulations, which require a number of US made parts to enter. There are two companies who have managed to assemble semi MP44s here in the US, but right now this is a trickle. The FG42 is still not available.

http://www.ssd-weapon.com/web_en/produkte_en.htm

Real FG42s skyrocketed in asking price from $60-70K to well over $100K after some guy with more money than brains paid $100K plus for one at a James Julia auction a year or so ago. Now everybody with one wants the moon. I think they will settle back to $100K or less in this economy.

A little internet research and success. The reason Johnson didn't produce his second LMG, he sold the patents to Isreal and a company named Dror produced them.

They got the first model, too - the fishtail stock & raked grip...Doesn't say how much...

...But I imagine only Michael Zeleny can afford one anyway... :(

alanint 06-29-2011 07:22 PM

They sell for between 2-3 thousand in Germany. The importers here are asking and getting $5000 for the MP44s. The FG42 has still not been offered. I am still owed a $1,500 deposit by that crook at www.FG42.us who took money from dozens of us then bailed out on the project just short of production, selling all the jigs and parts to someone else and skipping town.

jl7422 06-30-2011 01:32 AM

My favorite subgun remains the PPSh-41. Simple, robust, and a great rate of fire. Plus there's just something cool about having the empty brass still raining down on you for a moment or two after a drum-dump. . .

Douglas Jr. 06-30-2011 10:59 AM

Currently I own three machine guns (all of them fully auto and live): a BAR 1918A2, a MP28 and a Thompson.

Do not intend to expand much more. My main interest is on pistols. In fact, the only "big size" I would love to own would be a MP44. That would make me a happy guy!

lugerholsterrepair 07-01-2011 05:12 PM

I can't make up my mind..Which was better to shoot... the MP18 or the stocked Borchardt?

Thanks for the good times George..
