Ed,

Just making sure I follow, you think it may have been sold in the US post-WW2 as opposed to a German civilian gun/private purchase sidearm of some sort in the Weimar era that was confiscated in WWII?

I just know that most American imported commercial lugers pre-WWII have that "GERMANY" or "MADE IN GERMANY" stamp somewhere, including my post-WWI 5 digit gun.

yes and no - what I said was that it was possible, since it was not have germany stamped. After WW2 lugers were not mass produced until Mauser - tens of thousands were sold by exported and then imported - but I do not believe any were marked with country of origin (95% sure). It could be either one, sold post war or private purchase. Without any provenance, its a guess.

________
NOTE - as an aside and not to muddy the waters, but tens of thousands of guns were taken by whats his name, the giant arms dealer in the 50's/60's right after the war and stored in England, which at some point (and likely right before they left the country), were required to get "Not english made' and proofed - so this is why you see many lugers with british proofs :)

Are you thinking of Sam Cummings of Interarmco?
