Whew! I can hardly believe I really did all that. It took several tries, I had the photos in the wrong format was the problem I think. Anyway, sorry the pictures aren't very revealing, the light was glaring and for some reason the camera cut off the top of some of the pics [img]rolleyes.gif[/img] but now that I've graduated "Uploading 101" <img src="graemlins/r.gif" border="0" alt="[king]" /> I can possibly try again if I haven't lost my audience by now... In photo #4 you can see the shiny area behind the thumb safety in the locked position.

You certainly have not lost your audience. Its a good start, the pictures are very compressed, but it appears that you have a really nice Luger. And thats quite a manicure, too [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

You are right Albert, I should have taken a closer look at the pictures, there just ain't a sear safety on that gun at all.

I think they are in pdf instead of jpg. They won't open for me like a .jpg, but go to my download manager and open.

Sorry, no new pictures tonight. It's quite a gyration I have to go thru to get them as I'm not equipped with the dig. camera or software for uploading the photos, but my mother (wierd huh) is helping me. She then emails me the photos so I can download then upload. (Gee, I almost SOUND sorta smart <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" /> ) But I am amused by all your funny comments and I am eager to learn more about my (our) gun. Yes, I am very happily married, and the gun belonged to my father-in-law, and is intended for my son one day.

BTW- what is a sear safety? and why don't I have one?

The photos posted by Melissa are in fact in PDF document format which is not a graphics format, but can contain photographs and images, and they require that you have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. You can download this reader program for free from Adobe.com

Melissa, the sear safety is a small, bent piece of steel riveted over the top of the side plate on the left side of the gun. In the photos above the upper Luger has a sear safety, the lower one does not.

The sear safety was added to Lugers when they were pressed into service by German civilian Police organizations beginning in the Weimar Republic period between the two World Wars; it is one defining characteristic of those pistols.

I don't know if you have gone so far as to attempt to disassemble your Luger. When you do so, you -MUST- make sure that it is unloaded, that there is no cartrige in the chamber. It is a characteristic of Lugers that they can be fired when the cannon--the upper barrel/receiver/toggle assembly--is removed from the frame. The sear safety was added to prevent this occurrance.

Your Luger does not have one because it was never used as a German police weapon.

Sorry Mskirv, without a sear safety, as explained above, this whole thing would just not work out. My wife of 29 years would not understand me leaving for a non-police Luger, but then on the other hand she doesn't understand Lugers. What a great treasure for you son.

Interesting Info about the sear safety. I don't think I'm up for any attempt at disassemby! I can barely open the toggle assembly or get it to close once I have opened it. I have figured out that the only way to close it is to take out the magazine first- is that normal? Also I'm guessing you gentlemen would classify my gun as a "collector" as opposed to a "shooter"? Dad kept it loaded at his bedside until now as self-protection but said he hadn't actually fired it for 15 or 20 years. But he would still take it out and lovingly admire it and clean it and show it off to visitors for the sake of conversation. The box of shells he included look to be at least 30 years old.. (to me at least).

Guns as yours pass the shooter stage. Shooters may range upward in value to your gun, but should a part break in firing, the owner may feel that the experance of firing the gun was worth it. Most of here, I think, may have one lesser condition gun which we fire and should a part break, or some other damage occure we could live with it. You gun goes far behond shooter grade and it is a real collector piece, not worth the risk of shooting, but a family treasure to be passed down. I only shoot the one luger of mine every few years, as for the rest they are of too great a replacemnet value, and a investment to risk....hope this helps
