Shown is my one artillery stock, non acceptance marked, Weimar era, it does have a serial number one it.

Bought / traded from well known artillery collector.

The bare wood evident where the top leather tongue has been recently removed from some of these stocks brings up a question;
Where stocks issued with bare, untreated wood?
Where they finished AFTER the leather trappings were added?, (which seems to be the case, if the finish was factory applied).
Is the finish we see on them today from the original manufacturer or the work of the various owners throughout the years?
Has anybody ever seen a completely pristine, unissued rig that they comment on?

I don't think it is so much the treated or untreated. Mostly it's the difference from the parts exposure to elements , handling, dirt etc. They are bound to be different. Bill

Doug, Bill..I have seen quite a few of these as I work on Artillery rigs and have often wondered this myself. Usually when you take off the four screws and peel back the leather for the first time in many decades..likely since it was put on almost a hundred years ago..it looks totally unfinished. Kinda bare raw wood. Makes you wonder.

Hi Doug, Luger stocks were finished prior to the attachment of the leather. I have an un-issued Navy stock, with pilot holes drilled for the leather attachment screws. It's finished all over.

Norm, your stock may be finished all over but I don't think you can make this statement with any certainty.

If you have a Navy with more than one screw hole..something is amiss. That and can we ever be sure when a stock was last finished? 100 years ago or 25 years. Might be hard to say for sure.

With all those stock lugs did the great luger producers make stock other than those for the navy and artillery? Would the be legal if they did?~~Eric
